George Lucas Further Estranges Himself from Fans; Says He Hasn’t Seen the STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Trailer

George Lucas has the unique position of being despised by the fans of the thing he created.  There would be no Star Wars fans without Lucas, and now those fans are happy to rid of him with Star Wars: The Force Awakens.  Lucas seems to be handling it alright (being ostracized by angry nerds isn’t the worst fate in the world), and isn’t in much of a rush to see what’s happening with the next installment of the franchise.

According to Page Six, Lucas says he hasn’t seen the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer “Because it’s not in the movie theater. I like going to the movies and watching the whole thing there.”  It’s unclear if Lucas meant wanting to see the trailer in a movie theater or if he meant the entire movie, but either way, he doesn’t seem to be in much of a rush to see what J.J. Abrams is doing in a galaxy far, far away.  Hit the jump for more.  Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens December 18, 2015.

About a year ago, George Lucas’ son Jett, who’s a creative consultant on Episode VII, said his father was “constantly talking” to Abrams about the movie.  But Page Six (and it’s important to keep in mind that anything from Page Six is questionable reporting) says that when they asked Lucas if he was curious about what Abrams was doing with the film, he replied, “Not really.”

Perhaps this is just the process of letting the franchise go, and that it’s probably a little painful.  He directed four out of the six films and was involved with all of them.  Now he’s watching it fly off into another direction, and I imagine with every frame he would be thinking, “I would have done it this way.”  Perhaps the best way to digest it isn’t to watch 88 seconds and stew over what the final outcome will be.  For Lucas, it might be best to watch the completed feature, and when asked about it by the press, he’ll walk the party line and give his blessing.
