First Trailer for GETAWAY Starring Ethan Hawke and Selena Gomez

Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for director Courtney Solomon‘s (Dungeons & Dragons) thriller Getaway.  The film stars Ethan Hawke as a former race car driver who commandeers a Shelby Cobra Mustang and is saddled with a young hacker (Selena Gomez) in a race against time to save his wife from a mysterious kidnapper.  Jon Voight puts on a pretty terrible accent as the film’s villain, and the seemingly chemistry-less team up of Ethan Hawke and Selena Gomez is, well, unfortunate.  The saving grace of the film looks to be its car chase sequences, which actually appear to be well staged and interesting, but the question remains whether we’ll actually care about the characters enough to be invested in said sequences.

Here’s the official synopsis for Getaway:

Getaway is the gritty, heart-pounding action thriller from Warner Bros. Pictures and Dark Castle Entertainment in which former race car driver Brent Magna (Ethan Hawke) is pitted against the clock. Desperately trying to save the life of his kidnapped wife, Brent commandeers a custom Shelby Cobra Mustang, taking it and its unwitting owner (Selena Gomez) on a high-speed race against time, at the command of the mysterious villain holding his wife hostage.

This looks a little interesting, almost like an Speed as an indie.

Get away, Getaway. Go away Getaway

It’s almost as if they wrote that song for my own son.

I’m a pretty big Ethan Hawke fan, but… Who on earth thought Selena Gomez as a young computer hacker was a good idea?? If they thought they could take advantage of her fan base that would be one thing, but films like this and Spring Breakers are simply put too adult and too dark/riskay to appeal to her fan base as Spring Breakers box office reception clearly indicated.

Hell, might as well replace Ethan Hawke with Justin Bieber and sell out completely. Because no one who would’ve been interested in this film will see it now that Gomez is in it.

No Ethan Hawke fans plus no Selena Gomez fans= box office dud.

It seems like Hollywoods becoming less and less about big name actors and more about big name characters. Daniel Craig, for example, can do another bond film and everyone will see it, he can then go and make something else and no one will watch it. Same thing with most super hero actors, they could be replaced and people will still watch the film.

      • Redjester

Regarding Craig that’s a damn shame, especially in regard to some of his newer films like Dragon Tattoo. I absolutely adore that filim.

Although I loved the original as well, I feel that the sequels weren’t much better than your average TV movie and unfortunately the Fincher film didn’t do well enough for a directer like Fincher to be willing to devote the next ten years to rounding out the series.

Damn you movie going public! *shakes fist in air*

The premise sounds interesting, but yeah what an odd mish-mash of talent both in front of the camera and behind (from the director of Dungeons & Dragons!). The script sounds like it could have been cooler if it had been cast with renowned up-and-coming actors and a new director with potential.

Regardless, I may look this up on Netflix after its theatrical run (which will probably be very short, if it happens at all). I really don’t mean this as a put-down. These days, there are plenty of movies that are obscure I quite enjoy watching for the first time at home. This one in particular sounds like a Netflixer.

I’m an Ethan Hawke fan and I’ll be seeing The Purge this weekend, but I almost laughed when Selena Gomez tried to car jack him. What a joke. Your telling me that they couldn’t find a more talented young actress for a role like that? How many times do they cast these teen personalities in movies and then watch it outright bomb?

Replace Gomez with Chloe Grace Moretz and my expectations for this film would change completely

    • RiddleThemThis

Yeah, the movie actually looked decent for what it was. Gomez just ruined it for me though.

Selena did show some improvement in spring breakers. but yeah agree having moretz instead would have made this movie more interesting

Gomez ruined it for me. If it wasn’t for her I would pay to see it.
