Nicolas Cage Talks GHOST RIDER 3; Says it’s Possible ‘But it Won’t be With Me’

ghost-rider-3-nicolas-cage-interview-slice

Just a few hours ago, I sat down with Nicolas Cage for a fantastic interview about DreamWorks Animations The Croods.  While I’ve spoken to Cage a number of times, today was definitely the best interview by a mile.  Not only was he excited to talk about The Croods and how happy he was with the finished film, when I asked him about Superman, SNL’s Get in the Cage with Nicolas Cage, and even possible future projects like Ghost Rider 3, he was more than happy to talk.  I can’t wait to share the full interview.  However, rather than having you wait till the week of March 22nd (when The Croods gets released), fans of the Ghost Rider movie franchise will be happy to know that I’m posting what he said about that franchise today.  The big news is when I asked him if the movie is on the drawing board, or if it’s a possibility, he told me:

“It’s possible, but it won’t be with me.”

Continued after the jump.

ghost_rider_3_posterWhile Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance only made $51 million domestically, it pulled in another $80 million worldwide, for a total of $132 million before home video sales.  With a budget of $47 million (according to Cage), a third installment seems like an easy bet for Sony, especially with the popularity of comic book movies around the world.

However, one of the big issues with the Ghost Rider franchise is that I’ve never spoken to one person who loved either film.  While each Ghost Rider movie had a few moments that were cool, on the whole I think the character is really tough to translate onto movie screens, and it might be one that’s better suited to stay in comic books.

Getting back to a 3rd movie…

Even though Cage is a huge comic book fan and loved playing the character, he told me:

“I’ve said what I have to say.  I don’t want to say never…anything’s possible.  But I doubt, highly, that I would be in a third installment of that.”

So the big question is do you still want to see a 3rd Ghost Rider movie if Cage isn’t Johnny Blaze?  Do you think Sony should reboot it?  Let me know in the comments.

Here’s Cage and I talking about Ghost Rider 3.  Look for the full interview later this month.

While Ghost Rider 2 was a mess… parts of it were spectacular. I really do hope they make a 3rd, and I would be totally happy if Cage returned.

  • dodoriz

It’s a shame to see Cage leave, he was the only good thing about these films. I hope he can make his way into the marvel cinematic universe now that he won’t be doing ghost rider. As far as heroes go, I can see him doing a good doctor strange but maybe he can do some villain down the line.

    • Uh

Nic Cage as Johnny Blaze is quite possibly the most hilarious miscasting of all time.

      • Bowhunter0121

In your opinion. I can remember the first mentioning and creating of ghost rider and cage pulled it off perfectly. Now daredevil was awful! Ghost rider was awesome

  • Dude

The only reason I want to see a Ghost Rider 3 is for Nicholas Cage. The last one was absolutely hilarious, and all because of Cage.

  • Dequan

I like Spirit Of Vengeance I thought It was the closet thing to a good and as well fun Ghost Rider film

  • Yu Sheng Wu

Steve…the background of the set is moving…is the background a animatronic figure or am I hallucinating here?

    • Steve ‘Frosty’ Weintraub

you’re not wrong…the background is moving. wait till you see the full interview where the monkey makes some noise and we both lose it on camera.

      • Yu Sheng Wu

        Oh that clears things up.

  • Nate H

I don’t think they should make a 3rd one. They probably shouldn’t have made a 1st or 2nd either. GH just doesn’t work on the big screen, I don’t think. I’d rather they not do it because it makes Marvel look bad, and we want Marvel looking as good as possible so that it can make more GOOD comic book films.

    • Bowhunter0121

The movies were better than x-men. Everyone has their opinion. And anyone who has been a fan since ghost rider was created, a true fan should be happy to see the character come to life. Both movies had awesome graphics and cast. And i would love to see a third if and only if cage was the rider in the third film as well. Im sick of people acting like cage is a nobody. He is a legend and has a realism that other actors could only dream of having. He isnt just repeating a script when he acts he is the character! Cage please keep making ghost rider films and these people claim they didnt like them but keep in mind if it was awful or a joke, not only did they watch the full first movie but they also watched it and spirit of vengeance in full as well. People need to stop acting like they are comic book gurus and admit the character is so complex it is literally impossible to bring it to life in two movies and cage preformed flawlessly as the script was written. Keep in mind he was the character he didn’t write the script but he did bring it to life. Ghost rider is a sarcastic, ironic character and cage showed that better than anyone. And those of you that weren’t even around when spiderman, doctor strange, mrs.marvel, superman, spiderman, wolverine and the x-men or the fantastic 4 where created then please keep your comments to yourself because you haven’t been around long enough nor invested enough into Stan Lee’s legacy or comic books in general to even voice your opinion.

    OH GOD……PLEASE …..NO MORE GHOST RIDER…PLEASE!!!!!

    • Bowhunter0121

      Then don’t watch it.

  • Strong Enough

Cage should have been the villain in Hangover 3. that would have been so great

  • Austin

Steve were you able to ask Nic Cage about National Treasure 3?

    • Steve ‘Frosty’ Weintraub

yes. it’ll be part of the full interview.

  • Tarek

Ghost rider 2.was a pain in the ass. Horribly bad. I am really ashamed for Elba and nick cage

  • INSTANT JUSTICE

He should play Superman next. He played the best Batman ever.

  • blaine

The only reason these movies didn’t do it was because the rating compromised the work.

The punisher and Ghost Rider must be rated R. no exceptions

    • Uh

Punisher: War Zone was rated R, yet it was the worst piece of **** to be associated with Marvel Studios. That’s saying quite a lot when the competition happens to be such stinkers as Fantastic Four 1& 2, Ghost Rider 1 & 2, Wolverine: Origins, Hulk (2003), Blade Trinity, Daredevil, Elektra …. well you get where I’m going with this.

      • blaine

Your right, there are some stinkers that are rated R. But Punisher War zone wasn’t necessarily one of them. it was far better than the other two. it was a very close interpretation of the comic.

and as far as worst marvel movie… That would be X-men origins or fantastic 1 or 2.

…i’m sorry to say it but you can’t make a pg-13 wolverine. it will never work.

      • Uh

I’ve read all of Ennis’ run, which is considered to be the definitive Punisher. War Zone is NOT a close interpretation. They may have taken a look at that material specifically, but it was as if it was ultimately written by a marketing team trying to appeal to the eXtreme sensibilities of kiddies from the 90s. So bad that I couldn’t even make it to the halfway mark. Punisher 04 wasn’t good by any means, but I could at least make it through the entire movie. Sure, the material lends itself to an R rating; however, a solid script is always much more important. The fact that both those movies were rated R and still sucked can attest to that. The Ghost Rider movie would have also sucked regardless.

      • Bowhunter0121

And how old are you? I guess you remember when each of these characters very first comic debut came out? If not keep your opinions to yourself.

  • Think a little

Ghost Rider 2 was an excellent film.

    • J Wilson

I liked it better than the Dark Knight Rises…

      • Just Think

@J Wilson: You have no taste in movies…

      • J Wilson

        @Just Think
I’m sorry, do I know you? Cause you don’t know a damn thing about me.

      • Tarek

@ just think. Wilson has the right to like crappy movies.

Seriously people what is wrong with you I am sick of these big bang theory fan boy types (you know the ones that are in love with Nathan fillion and want him to play everything, these films need to be marketable to make money other wise no point to making films) complaining about comic book movies and them sucking I haven’t hated any of the marvel films and im a massive comic collector when translating a comic to film they will take liberties with the story because they don’t have a enough time in 90mins to fit it all in. Honestly enjoy it for what it is and stop nit picking

I had some issues with both films, but they’re done. I do like the second better, mainly because it went off the deep end. Do I want a third? Yes and No. How about a Ghost Rider cartoon instead, like what was done with Dr. Strange?

Now IF they do a third (and I would bet money to the contrary), they ought to have Danny Ketch proper and how about Lilith, Centurious, Zodiak, or the Orb (just kidding about that one).

I must be in the minority because I love both movies and hope Nic does a 3rd. I never knew it was based on a comic book. Maybe that is why I love them so much.

  • Kris

I LOVED both of the ghost rider movies and Nicolas did an unbelievable job playing the character. If anyone else plays Johnny Blaze I won’t watch the next movie assuming they make another.

  • kayleigh

I love the ghost.rider films and hope theres a third movie but I dont think it would be the same without Nicolas cage

  • julieann

If people are going to make movies and add on to make a series out of it then they need to keep the same face. Changing the story line is fine but stop changing face after the 2nd or 3rd film. Like spider -man and transformers. come on keep it real. Can’t keep the same faces then don’t make the movie.

  • Arina Lakhanda

Ghost rider 3…please. also with Nicholas Cage…please! I am really saying that he is the only one who suits in Ghost rider series…and also he is the only one that makes the film special and the best in my list! Even if my friends say that spirit of vengeance is “sadaela fhaleda” (meaning bad and worst) i think of it totally opposite. its the best film ever (even of 95 minutes) I TOTALLY LIKE IT! None actor (except Nicholas cage) can fit in or act in it as humorousely as he does (including the flamethrower pee),which is the best! so…i vote for gr3 with Nicholas Cage…
    enough

  • mia

This is what I think. They need to put Johnny blaise in the 3rd ghost rider because if they don’t the movie wouldn’t be the same without him because he is the moral of the story. But it would be nice to see something really amazing and better than the other 2 ghost riders. But with Johnny blaise in the movie. But I did enjoy watching the 1st && 2nd ghost rider.

  • Frank

Were we not kids when we started to read Ghostrider??? yet you want to exclude them lol?

  • Just a Fan

I’m a G.R Fan And to be honest the Second movie suck and a 12 year old could memorized the whole script they should reboot like spiderman but the cage was the best actor in ghost rider but i wish they could made the story close to the comics and if they are going to reboot it make the first movie a good one and the ending must be a opening to the second movie (if they are going to.)

  • Akriloth

Look-it I don’t care whether Nicolas Cage is going to be in Ghost Rider 3 or not. I do care about there being a 3rd installment for Ghost Rider 3. I’m a HUGE fan of the Ghost Rider Franchise and support a 3rd installment for Ghost Rider. It’d be sad if Nicolas Cage wasn’t playing as him. If the company who is doing the 3rd installment for Ghost Rider needs someone to take over then so be it. I’d be more than happy to unleash destruction! Buahahahahaha!!!

  • Zeeshan khan

Without cage Ghost Rider 3 will be a big flop…

    Without Mr Cage….. EMPHAtIC NOOOOO
movies whether I like the subject or not but the fact is… the man has BECOME
the ICON. anyone else trying to play the ghostrider…. would not pull it off and would most likely kill the buzz for fans like me

Im a huge comic book fan and a freelance comic artist… So I have to applaud Marvel on what they have done so far with their franchises… Before the Disney buyout they shopped around to different studios and got some pretty good movies made in a 15 year period… DC comics had a huge jump and are owned by WB and have only realy made Superman and Batman live action movies… They do the straight to video animated films but its not the same… Yes Marvel movies are not perfect but they’re doing better than most comic companies in the buisness today…. And they’re biggest rival are just really trying after being showed up… So dont down them for trying…

  • jon

Totally miscast from the beginning. Cage was simply wrong for this part. Johnny is a teenager in the comics. Not only tho….its all just really bad. The worst comic translation since Daredevil..actually even Daredevil was better than this.

  • bob

I liked the story and plot of Ghost Rider 1, The special effects looked so much better in Ghost rider 2, however I could not stand to watch more than 30 minutes of it.

You tell Nick he needs to be on this 3rd one, maybe like on the first one movie pass the responsibility on to the next! But like all the others movie will not be the same without him on there. Tell Nick John said at least do that much and think about it. Tell him to call me and go over ideas!

  • a

i want a 3rd one but only if cage is in it

  • t-dogg

I would really ike to see a 3 ghost rider but not without nicholas cage

new ghost rider as danny ketch thats what im thinking

  • vangie

I love cage as an actor, I also love all types of movies, I would love to see cage in an 3rd movie. I know he getting older and probably won’t be able to get it done. Ghost Rider is cage movie so if he can’t do it then let it go.

  • Bryant FireWolf McCutcheon

I will watch it but cage has to be johny

  • Bowhunter0121

Without cage i wouldn’t waste my money i highly doubt anyone anywhere could pull off ghost rider or johhny blaze as perfectly as he did. I would love for cage to make a third ghost rider me and my kids loved both movies!

  • Iaz

I personally think the first movie rocked didn’t get the respect it deserved brilliant acting the second one, while it was an alright movie was a complete mess sequel wise. And if the movie gets a sequel but johnny isn’t played by nick they should just leave it and we don’t want a reboot too many films are getting reboots the punisher got three movies, none of them sequels! Marvel should be concentrating on movie for characters who haven’t had movies like Luke Cage or even iron fist or stop doubting the deadpool movie and get it done.
