Plot Update for GHOSTBUSTERS 3

While film franchises like G.I. Joe and Transformers find a majority of their charm in providing audiences with a healthy dose of nostalgia, neither of those films really has that effect on me.  It’s by no fault of their own, I simply spent a majority of my days as a child walking around the house with a proton pack on my back ridding my house of paranormal activity (a daunting task for any six-year-old, but a labor of love no doubt).  As such, any and all news regarding Ghostbusters 3 is exciting to me.

If you would prefer to not get your hopes up on the long-awaited film, I suggest moving along.  However, if you would like to indulge in an important plot update, hit the jump.

Bloody Disgusting is reporting that director Ivan Reitman is looking to kick-start a new franchise with Ghostbusters 3 via inserting young blood into the mix.  Per the report, the film will reveal that Dana Barrett’s (Sigourney Weaver) son Oscar is actually Dr. Peter Venkman’s (Bill Murray) child as well.  As such, the now 21-ish Oscar is ready to take over the family business (information that Weaver let slip last December).  While it’s too early to tell how effective this storyline may be (ask any Indiana Jones fan who wasn’t so fond of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull), this news still adds depth to Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky’s story.

Finally, BD also reiterates how early reports suggest that all four of the original Ghostbusters (Murray, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, and Dan Aykroyd) will be returning alongside both Weaver and Rick Moranis.  Of course, much of the film’s details will likely be left to speculation until more concrete casting/production details begin to come in.  Until then, I’ll be forced to continually break out the first two films in anticipation.  Now, if only I could find that proton pack…

I cant wait for GB-3 !!! But I just hope it has the comedy Wit and character that the first 2 thirds of GB-1 has.
I hope it doesnt dilute itself with 3D, too many effects and overblown action. This film should be about the evolution of the GHOSTBUSTERS not an FX fest. Theres a reason Slimer, Stay Puft and Library Ghost are still so popular, its because of the Ghostbusters reaction to them, they didnt really get much screen-time.
Even Ghostbusters 2 had plenty of character and fun, but its in the quieter human moments that the films shine, for me anyways.

I just hope 3 is a witty carefully crafted character piece. I WANT to see Old fat Ghostbusters, its funny! The Oscar character is fine by me, but I hope it doesnt try to replace the original cast. Those 4 guys are what made Ghostbusters exceptional.

Michael Cera for Oscar. They should also try to get Seth Rogen, Craig Robinson and Paul Rudd for the other three, although Martin Starr would be a great surrogate for egon.

With ever new update, this movie just keeps sounding more lame. A ghostbusters movie without Bill Murray sounds lame. This thing got crossed off my list the day I found out he won’t be in it.

no…no..no. no no no no no. keep them with apatow. i’d rather have up and coming actors/comedians than well knowns. i want believability and not characters who play themselves in every film.

I don’t know why articles keep getting written about this; this movie is never going to happen. Bill Murray – who has veto rights over any future Ghostbusters projects, along with Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ivan Reitman – has publicly called the idea of GB3 “my nightmare” and “just crazy talk.”

In fact I’m pretty sure Collider wrote an article about it at the time.

Bill Murray has already said that this’ll never get made.

  • Danny McBride

DANNY McBRIDE should be Oscar! The son of Venkman would be a monster and a slob with a HUUUUGE ego !

I’m fine with no Ghostbusters 3, we had the video game last year which was pretty satisfying as far as a “new” or at least new-ish Ghostbusters story goes. Bill Murray seems pretty curmudgeonly on the whole idea too, but then again when I read an interview with him a few months ago he kinda seems like a guy who’s all talk so the whole grizzled attitude could be a front. I gotta say, if there was a movie that would work in 3D it would be Ghostbusters, the ghosts always seemed perfect for that kind of thing.
