Jason Reitman’s ‘Ghostbusters 3’ Gets a July 2020 Premiere Date

ghostbusters-3-sliceJason Reitman‘s Ghostbusters sequel may have materialized out of the netherworld, but development on the project is rolling right along. Casting for a young crew is underway with an eye to shoot this summer, and now—thanks to a Tweet from Reitman—we know that Sony Pictures has set a July 10, 2020 premiere date for Ghostbusters 3.

Reitman’s father, Ivan Reitman, directed both the original Ghostbusters and its 1989 sequel. Jason Reitman’s film—which he also co-wrote along with Gil Kenan—will pick up the story of the ghoul-hunting biz set in that same universe, presumably ignoring Paul Feig‘s 2016 reboot starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones.

“This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot,” the filmmaker told EW. “What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day.”

Outside of that info, plot details are pretty thin on the project, as are details on the involvement of original Ghostbusters stars like Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Sigourney Weaver. (Star and co-writer Harold Ramis passed away in 2014.) Reitman released a brief teaser trailer, which didn’t confirm much outside the fact that somebody is hoarding the Ecto-1 car in the spookiest of barns.

The July 10 date puts Ghostbusters 3 in close contention with another big Sony project, the standalone Morbius the Living Vampire film starring Jared Leto as Marvel’s half-Dracula, which bows July 31, 2020. It’s a pretty crowded month, actually. Disney’s The Jungle Cruise—starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt—is set to debut on July 24, 2020. And though details have been pretty scarce in the wake of Justice League‘s box office causing the DCEU slate go a bit wonky, Warner Bros.’ Green Lantern Corps movie is still scheduled to drop on that same day, July 24.
