If you believe that a third Ghostbusters movie is an inherently good thing, then get ready to cross your streams in excitement over the latest rumor.  Production Weekly is reporting that Sony Pictures is planning to put Ivan Reitman’s Ghostbusters 3 into production in May 2011.  Has some roadblock been cleared?  Is Bill Murray finally happy with the script?  Sure, Murray dressed up in Ghostbusting attire at the Scream Awards, but Murray is unpredictable.  He’s the kind of gent who will corner you in a dark alley so you’ll have a story that no one will believe.

Hit the jump for a recap of we know (or at least think we know) about Ghostbusters 3.

Here’s what we think we know about the next Ghostbusters movie:

  • Dana Barrett’s (Sigourney Weaver) son Oscar is actually Dr. Peter Venkman’s (Bill Murray) child.
  • Venkman is a ghost.
  • The plot will center on young Ghostbusters.
  • In addition to Weaver and Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, and Rick Moranis would also return.

While I’m not necessarily opposed to Ghostbusters 3, I’m not particularly enthusiastic about it either.  Obviously, if they have a good story, I’m in, but I don’t want another Ghostbusters movie simply because it’s been a long time since we had one.

  1. I’m excited about Ghostbuster 3, especially if its a witty comedic character piece rather than throwing too much SFX into it.

I want to see the original cast in it too, its a comedy so fat and old is funny!

That said, hurry the hell up and get on with it!!!! I want the old cast, but we dont want to have to dig them up to star in it!
