Will GHOSTBUSTERS 3 Finally Start Filming in Summer 2013?

ghostbusters-3

Ivan Reitman‘s Ghostbusters 3 has been in development hell for years, but we’re always hearing that it’s right around the corner.  That may now be the case since we learned in August that the production had given up the ghost of getting Bill Murray to return (even if his character would have been a ghost).  In July, Etan Cohen (Men in Black III) was tapped to re-write the script.  The pieces seem to be falling into place, and now Deadline is reporting that Reitman is planning to shoot the sequel next summer.

If Ghostbusters 3 is going to happen, this is probably when.  We don’t know if the sequel will still function as a reboot where a new, younger team of Ghostbusters are brought in to carry the franchise.  That would probably be the preferred direction for Sony, but perhaps it’s best to focus on one film at a time considering how long it’s taken for the third movie to get in front of cameras.

all what I’m afraid of is the Crystal Skull syndrome. Playing on the nostalgia of the fans with easy jokes.

I’m with Bill Murray on this one, no one wants to see fat old men running around chasing ghosts. And, I am a huge fan of the 80′s films and cartoon.

Also, no remakes or reboots, please.

If no Murray, then no go… But it would nice to have one more movie with him, if only to transition the franchise.

As I’ve said elsewhere, Bill Murray isn’t Ghostbusters. This is an odd idea that exists in the minds of some GB fans from the mid-to-late 80s. Those of us around for the period 82-84 remember that GB was originally written (by Ramis and Aykroyd) as a John Belushi vehicle. Murray was brought in as a replacement after J.B. died. Murray’s may have been a standout performance as Dr. Peter Venkman, but do you think kids today would care if he wasn’t in GB3? Don’t be silly, today’s kids barely know who Bill Murray is. A new GB movie, hopefully with Dan and Harold’s involvement (and Ivan Reitman, I suppose) would probably be a huge hit, with or without Bill Murray. I like Murray as an actor and I wish he would be involved, but he has made it plain recently that he is now an enemy of this franchise. With his refusal to participate, stringing Aykroyd along, appearing in costume in Zombieland and at the awards ceremony – just a huge finger poke in the eye of everyone who wants GB3 made. I personally love the concept and I have been waiting for this movie for two decades. I want it made, with a good script, with or without Bill Murray. And, aside from some younger fans (who THINK they are old fans), I doubt there will be howls of protest when the movie comes out minus grumpy old Bill.

Those of us a bit older than the Murray groupies know Bill was always just a cheap version of Belushi, anyway. Chevy Chase was right.
