Last night, word broke that Sony Pictures is not only planning to release a new Ghostbusters movie in Summer 2020, but that original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman’s son Jason Reitman is co-writing and directing the project. Now we know just how secret this whole thing was, as there’s already a Ghostbusters 3 teaser trailer to get fans hyped for the new movie.

The follow-up is set within the same cinematic universe as the first two Ghostbusters movies and thus will be a direct sequel to 1989’s Ghostbusters II. That means it will completely ignore Paul Feig’s 2016 female-led reboot, but it’s still unclear which original cast members—if any—will be returning for what we’re calling Ghostbusters 3.

Now, about that trailer. This is very much one of those teaser trailers that’s crafted before filming on the project even begins (think Cloverfield), but it does provide some hints as to what fans can expect from the new movie. For one, we know it takes place in present day, but this teaser suggests that the Ecto 1 and thus the Ghostbusters have either been gone or in hiding for quite some time. The teaser suggests that someone is tinkering with some equipment in this creepy barn, finally revealing the iconic vehicle under a tarp—although it looks pretty beat up. Has Bill Murray's Peter Venkman gone full Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi?

If Ghostbusters 3 is following continuity with Ghostbusters II and takes place in present day—30 years later—it stands to reason that the children of Peter (Murray), Ray (Dan Aykroyd), Egon (the late, great Harold Ramis), and Winston (Ernie Hudson) have some part to play in all this. Dana’s (Sigourney Weaver) baby son Oscar play a significant role in Ghostbusters II, so maybe he’s all grown up and taking over the mantle?

We have no confirmation, but this would make sense. For now, all we have is this eerie Ghostbusters 3 teaser trailer and the confirmation that filming is due to begin this summer from a script by Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan (Monster House). Which means this movie has been in the works under the radar for quite some time. Sneaky, sneaky Sony Pictures.
