Rachel Nichols Says only Duke, Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes will Return for G.I. JOE 2

     March 4, 2011

Now that Jon Chu (Justin Bieber: Never Say Never) has officially landed the directing gig on G.I. Joe 2, speculation now turns to the cast. Rachel Nichols, who portrayed Scarlett in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, recently sent out a tweet [via /Film] confirming that only a handful of the original film’s cast will return for the sequel. And by a handful I mean Lee Byung-hun (Storm Shadow), Ray Park (Snake Eyes) and Channing Tatum (Duke). Nichols then followed the tweet up with this statement:

“… Thank you. After the GI JOE news I had Heavy Boots, but I’m smiling now!”

This seems to suggest that Paramount is sticking with the small handful of characters who actually worked in the original film – one of whom has plastic lips that don’t move – and vetoing the likes of Sienna Miller, Marlon Wayans, Dennis Quaid, and even Joseph Gordon-Levitt who was clearly set up as the villain Cobra Commander in a potential sequel. This also suggests that Paramount is keeping the budget relatively smaller than the Cobra’s $175 million price tag. Of course none of this has been confirmed by the studio, so file it under rumor for now. G.I. Joe 2 is being written by Zombieland scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

Update:  Paramount has settled on a August 10th, 2012 release date for the G.I. Joe sequel.  More info here.

Who cares? That shit sucked. One of the all-time worst.

Then why are you reading this article?! If you don’t care and your still riding comments your a no life loser. I personally liked the movie.

Dennis Quaid was spectacularly bad in the first movie, making him the only enjoyable element in the whole disaster.
I’m thinking Joseph Gordon-Levitt might be above this sort of crap now. He’s running with Nolan.

    • @ Baldowl

Baldowl, it just seems like Levitt is beyond this.

And while Quaid was terrible in the first film, he still had some presence. With him now gone, it feels like a C movie instead of a B movie.

I’m not too sure what you’re trying to say, Jeff, because you’re implying that Duke was a stronger character than Nichols’ Scarlett? I don’t know.

Also, is it gonna be sausage factory now? Jeez?

I thought she did a decent job but perhaps, it’s for the best for her to move on. It just feels like this franchise is DEAD in the water because I’m not a fan of sequels where a bunch of characters are either recast or are absent. For no reason.

Misinformation. You know that the Baroness will be in the sequel…just not with the previous actress. The character is essential to G.I. Joe and was in nearly every 80s episode. The first movie wasn’t the best to be sure, so the sequel has much to improve upon…getting rid of certain storylines and character relationships would be good as would bringing in classic characters from the 80s like Snow Job, Zartan (that changes color), The Dreadnoks, Shipwreck, Tunnel Rat, Wild Bill and Roadblock. Roadblock would be great if actor Terry Crews played him.

And they need to fix the costumes to more resemble the 80s character looks as well…Snake Eyes without the plastic lips (retarded) and Cobra Commander without his signature helmet.

The producers are also going to have to bridge the two movies…maybe they could say that the first movie was mind manipulation from Dr. Mindbender? They’ll need something so that they’re not throwing out the entire first film while starting over at the same time.

I like Cobra Commander with the hood more than the stupid helmet… but I can see how movie producers were worried it looked too much like the KKK.

As for the potential loss of Sienna Miller and Rachel Nichols… sad… we need an army of models…

Ha! Shows what you know. Moron.

I’m glad for the major overhaul. As a huge fan of the 80’s series and comics, that recent movie shared nothing in common but names. I find it hard to believe that Sommers had even heard of the property before filming began. I don’t know about Chu but he does profess to be a huge fan since childhood of G.I. Joe and wants to do it right. Hopefully that will be true. I really don’t see how his film could be worse, which is good news to me.

  • Enigmatic

As long as Channing Tatum is in the movie it will have absolutely no chance at being any good.

    • The.Watcher

Well, with his starring vehicle The Eagle doing a Titanic at the BO, by which I mean the movie was the Titanic and the Ice-Block was the audience’s reception, he really needs all the work he can get.

Quaid was only doing this movie cuz his kids told him he would be their favorite…they said “please be General Hawk”, and so he accepted, other than that he said he had no interest. That being said, even though he hammed it up like crazy the movie as a whole is one of the worst movies ever made….and that’s kind of why I liked it. When I was 10 I’d smash Joes together and think up an elaborate fight scene and war and battle and non of it made any sense except to me. I felt like the movie was a giant 10 year old playing with his toys and it really made me happy. Dennis Quaid was one of two good actors in the entire thing and I’m sad to see that he wont be returning. I met him once when I was an extra in The Express and when I found out shortly after that he was going to be my favorite action figure I was really excited for the movie. Now, I guess I can cross my fingers that its half as funny as Zombieland.
