G.I. JOE 2 Gets a New Title and Takes STAR TREK 2′s June 29, 2012 Release Date

     July 27, 2011

Yielding to common sense, Paramount has finally taken Star Trek 2 off the schedule and given it’s June 29, 2012 release date to G.I. Joe 2G.I. Joe may not have the draw of the Star Trek franchise, but Paramount needs a tent pole for that date and the G.I. Joe sequel is what’s available.  Deadline also reports that the title has been changed from G.I. Joe: Cobra Strikes (a delightfully goofy title) to G.I. Joe: Retaliation (a deadly serious title for a sequel to a movie where the characters bounced around like the Gummi Bears).

In his interview with Steve at Comic-Con Trek 2 co-writer Damon Lindelof said they’re currently writing the script.  January is being kicked around as the possible start date for the sequel, which would likely mean a holiday 2012 (incredibly optimistic) or a summer 2013 release date (far more likely).  Deadline adds that Paramount has exercised its option on the cast which means that Chris Pine will be playing Captain Kirk before he stars in the studio’s Jack Ryan reboot.  While I’m slightly bummed that we’re probably not getting a new Trek next year, I’d rather have the movie done right than done fast. [Correction: I originally said the release date was July 29, 2012 when I meant June 29, 2012]

kinda stupid ! G.I. JOE sucked monkey balls !

  • Edward Lee

I’m one of the rare few who actually enjoyed GI JOE, so I’m hoping they can return to form with the sequel. I can wait as long as it takes for a quality STAR TREK film.

    • Dewey Cox

I liked G.I. JOE too. People tend to forget that movies like Transformers and G.I. JOE were based on toys and TV shows. They did not have the Luxury of having written source material ala’ comic books.
While it had horrible acting and a less that spectacular story the movie itself was very fun to watch.
I loved the COBRA base. The subs and underwater lair were everything I dreamed of as a KID.
This movie got a bad wrap because Channing Tatum cannot act and Marlon Wayans was cast as Ripcord. Ok those were bad choices..

Its tough to compare STAR TREK AND GI JOE but I am just glad we are getting sequels to both.

you’re kidding right? the g.i. joe marvel comic book was one of the best selling comics of the 80s. there’s tons of source material, a lot of which was used in the first film.

      • Damo

Indeed. They very carefully looked at the excellent comics, said “we can do better than this overly-intellectual crap for eggheads and war-nerds!” ignored what they’d read, and turned the fantastic source material into one of the worst movies to be inflicted on Hollywood in a long while. For pity’s sake, it wasn’t until (comic writer and G.I. Joe creative head) Larry Hama was finally summoned to do some last minute “make this stink slightly less” work that they cut Snake Eyes talking (which they’d put in so he could say a lame joke).

When the stuff written on the back of the toy’s box is better than the movie, someone has seriously screwed up.

    • LiamH

He meant 6/29/12 that was the original release date of Trek 2. Once again another typo.

I suppose this frees up The Rock for Expendables 2 without any conflicts of interest.

    Hi Matt –

And while you’re ‘slightly bummed’ about star trek, take a moment to think about how all the articles you write suck, and all sound the same.

So formulaic: I’m excited, here’s the scoop, here’s why I’m disappointed.

Something also tells me you wanted to be a filmmaker, and the best you could do was write for this dopey website.

    Go back to undergrad.

Whoa watch out for TV_guy, ferocious keyboard warrior right here. I don’t see you being productive, at least he’s getting the information out.

I am also bummed about Star Trek, but I enjoyed GI Joe, so a sequel is something I look forward to anyhow.
