Disney’s animated retelling of the Jack and the Beanstalk story just landed another director, and this one’s got a number of buzzworthy fires going at the moment. Meg LeFauve earned an Oscar nomination earlier this year for co-writing the Pixar film Inside Out and has already been tapped to co-write Marvel’s first female-led superhero movie Captain Marvel, and now she’s going to be adding “director” to her resume.
Per THR, LeFauve will join Tangled helmer Nathan Greno as co-director on the Disney animated film Gigantic. LeFauve had been working on the script for the film for some time, but THR notes that her input and collaboration expanded into a larger role, and she’ll now serve as fully fledged co-director. This is reportedly similar to what transpired on the smash-hit Frozen, where co-writer Jennifer Lee was upped to co-director alongside Chris Buck. Lee is now a top tier talent at Disney, returning to co-write and co-direct Frozen 2 and scripting director Ava DuVernay’s live-action A Wrinkle in Time adaptation.
Gigantic is still a bit under wraps as it’s still in development, but the film is said to update the Jack and the Beanstalk story with a tale that finds Jack befriending a female giant. It’ll be a musical, with Frozen songwriters Robert Lopez and Kirsten Anderson-Lopez penning original songs, and it certainly has some serious promise—especially now with LeFauvre onboard as a director.
While Disney is certainly focused on live-action updates of animated classics, Walt Disney Animation is on a serious roll as of late, with this year’s Zootopia proving to be a massive box office and critical hit. They’ve got Moana coming in November, with Dwayne Johnson lending his vocal talents to an island adventure story, and they recently greenlit Wreck-It Ralph 2 for release on March 9, 2018. Gigantic will follow on November 21, 2018.
