Last week, we got the unexpected, but very welcome news that Netflix and Warner Bros. are teaming up for a Gilmore Girls revival series that would span only four movie-length episodes. Now, we've learned exactly how that unusual narrative structure will play out. TVLine reports that the Amy Sherman-Palladino fronted follow-up series will follow a seasonal structure, with one episode for each season of a calendar year. So we can look forward to a winter episode, spring episode, summer episode and fall episode, which has just the right amount of whimsy for any return to Stars Hollow. It also offers a narrative opportunity to tell a lot of story in a little time.
Palladino returns to write and direct the entire run of revival episodes -- a fantastic bit of news for fans who never got to see Palladino's planned Gilmore Girls resolution when she stepped away from the series prior to the final season after a bout of conflict of contract negotiations with the studio. Daniel Palladino also returns as Executive producer.
While neither Netflix nor Warner Bros. has offered an official confirmation of the revival as of yet, word is the series will pick up in the present day, almost a decade after the network run ended. The show's primary cast, including Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel, Kelly Bishop and Scott Patterson are said to be in negotiations to return, and honestly I can't see how it would work without any one of them, especially since they're already going to have to address the sad absence of Edward Herrmann as the sage Gilmore patriarch, Richard Gilmore.. No word yet on one of the other Gilmore Girls major players, Melissa McCarthy, whose career skyrocketed since the series went of the air. I hope they get her though, because without Sookie St. James, is Gilmore Girls really Gilmore Girls at all?
Rumor has it all of Rory's major suitors, including Logan (Matt Czuchry), Jess (Milo Ventimiglia), and Dean (Jared Padalecki) are all hopefulls to appear as well. That would make sense since all three gentlemen were on hand for the major Gilmore Girls reunion that went down at the ATX TV Festival earlier this year. If there's one thing that festival appearance made clear, it's that even though there's no shortage of revival series on the market these days, Gilmore Girls is not only one that makes sense, it's one that a lot of people want to see.
