Just a short while ago we announced the production of a female version of The Expendables. Now, we have word that up-and-coming action star Gina Carano (Haywire) is set to topline the untitled picture. Carano was briefly mentioned in our fantasy cast for Adi Shankar’s production, which Dutch Southern is writing. The former American Gladiators star certainly has the goods to be the face of the ladies’ version of the franchise, but it would be a missed opportunity not to include some of cinema’s classic action heroines. Variety reports
that Shankar is also in talks with several unnamed actresses prominent in the action genre, but is thrilled to have Carano on board, saying:
“I don’t know how I’m supposed to make a movie that is supposed to be the female version of ‘The Expendables’ without Gina Carano in it. It would be like making Twix without caramel or Jamba Juice without jamba.”
Carano is an excellent choice to build the franchise around, but the faces of the male version of The Expendables were the famous action stars we’d grown to know and love. Here’s hoping Shankar is able to round up some good old fashioned 80s, 90s and 00s action talent to go along with the new blood.
Carano can next be seen in The Fast and the Furious 6 (see a set photo with co-star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson here) and is also attached to star in John Stockwell’s Taken-esque action-thriller In the Blood.

Yeah, way to pick an actress that is so bad, and so incapable of inflecting any type of emotion in her voice, that her entire role for Haywire was dubbed over. Sigourney Weaver, Jamie Lee Curtis, Linda Hamilton, hell even Pam Grier Ms. Foxy Brown herself would have been better for the lead. Too bad Expendables 2 used the best action, Kung Fu woman of them all, Michelle Yeoh.
No offense to Gina Carano but I think this cash grab has already taken a mis-step. The Expendables was built around blockbuster action stars like Sly, Dolph, Jet Li, and Statham. Then they got new guys like Terry Crews & Randy Couture(who is a UFC legend). They also had Bruce & Arnold in cameo’s. For a project like this you build around someone like Sigourney Weaver, Uma Thurman, Kate Beckinsale, or Milla Jovovich and go from there. Use someone like Lucy Lawless for the villain. I’m not saying Carano doesn’t fit but she should have a more secondary role like Mr. Couture.

Will she be naked? All the The Lady Expendables should have a nude shower scene. Just saying. And let’s get used to calling it The Lady Expendables because I’m not watching it if its called something else, and if there is no nude shower scene with Jolie, Yeoh, Hamilton, Weaver, Jovovich, Lawless, Fox, Rothrock, Barrymore and Rodriguez. I don’t care how old they are, strip them and wet them down.

Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor in Terminator 2 is already a bigger badass than Gina Carano or, for that matter, half of the male Expendables cast.
I think it’s telling that Adi Shankar used juice and candy as metaphor’s to show Carano’s necessity for the franchise. Namely, that he doesn’t see these women as actual badasses, but rather sugary window dressing on explosions and male actors.

If they are going to make a female expendables film I think perhaps Angelina Jolie should be the one in charge and the film should really have Cynthia Rothrock in it because she can really kick ass. Also it would be good at a later stage to make a film starring the expendables (men) and the expendables (ladies) in the same blockbuster. This would be a fantastic achievement to see all these stars in one film.
