Sony Going Ahead with THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO Sequels Despite Weak Box Office

David Fincher‘s adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo opened to disappointing box office although it didn’t absolutely tank.  It’s an R-rated movie opening at the holiday season, but Sony expected a bigger success based on the ridiculous sales of Stieg Larsson‘s novel of the same name.  More worrisome for Sony is that the movie, despite being set out the US, isn’t connecting with international audiences, and according to Deadline, “GWDT pened only 3rd in the UK, and disappointing in Asia, and ‘not as good as hoped for’ in Sweden, Denmark, and Finland.”

Sony has held off on giving the greenlight to the sequels, The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest, but they’ve had Dragon Tattoo screenwriter Steve Zaillian at work on both.  Now the studio has officially pulled the trigger on completing the “Millennium Trilogy”.  Hit the jump for more.

According to Deadline, Sony hasn’t locked Fincher down to helm the sequel, but the studio is planning to start shooting Played with Fire at the end of 2012/beginning of 2013.  Dragon Tattoo may have the box office legs to warrant the decision, but even if it doesn’t, there’s never a moment to lose in making a new franchise.  The above-the-line talent gets busy and then scheduling difficulties stall the production.  When it comes to building a successful franchise, he who hesitates doesn’t get to make more sequels.

I haven’t read any of the books (nor do I intend to since I’d prefer to read books that interest me), but apparently The Girl Who Played with Fire doesn’t really feature Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara).  That’s a problem since she’s the series’ only hook, but Sony will make sure their adaptation keeps the psychotic hacker/rape-avenger at the fore.  But it wouldn’t be crazy to assume that this time they’ll probably keep her away from Christmas.

Unfortunately, it was banned here in my country ( kuwait ) and i think most of the Middle-eastern countries as well…. now i have to wait all over again for the dvd/blu-ray :(

You Muslims live with a stone-age mentality. You might have amazing infrastructure and basic amenities like here in the first world countries, but you people are cavemen and should be exterminated…yes you too.

      • Tina

Wow, you sound pretty ignorant. I hate being called an American because of people like you. No wonder why the rest of the world calls us stupid Americans. Please pick up a book and do some research before you start ranting about things you clearly do not understand. If anything, half-wits like you need to be “exterminated”.

      • Mr English

Amazed at your stupidity “Da BoSS”
I myself am a Russian American – and disregarding both my home nations histories with the Arab world I have to say you are mentally retarded. Lets just skip the hypocritical fact that you yourself cannot use the proper English language (even though I bet its your first) thus you spell what I believe you meant to say was “The Boss” with a “Da” then go on calling Muslims ‘cavemen’. There are many things in your comment that make me laugh out loud at your stupidity but I’ll just point out a few. The Muslim faith is a religion and has little to no indication on location or nation, as here in America we have quite the few African Americans with that faith, so are they too cavemen with a stone- age mentality? Or how about the white Muslims that reside in post soviet nations? Anyway I just realized I have way too much to say on behalf of your clear mental retardation, so I’ll just stop here and let the internet point and laugh at you.

    Matt shut up

Lisbeth Salander is in ALL 3 books as a major character, as well as the original Swedish film adaptations. Anyone who says otherwise must work for the FOX News fact checking department.

Hopefully Fincher is involved with the next two installments, he’s the man.

And yeah, how can you say you’re uninterested in the stories when you don’t even know what they’re about?

  • Ryan

Sorry it is banned Aboud, since you have internet you should download a torrent program to get the video files when they become available.

    That or move from Kuwait.

‘but apparently The Girl Who Played with Fire doesn’t really feature Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara).’

    Matt, go read a book.

While Blomkvist is the main protagonist in “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” Lisbeth is the center of the storyline in “The Girl Who Played with Fire.” Pulling away the layers of her past.

Pretty sure this dude is trying to troll the sites readers or fish for comments. Eh. Just annoying I guess.

Maybe the reason this movie isn’t making money overseas is because everyone in Europe/Asia saw the Swedish original version of these films? Which were quite good, remaking them was kind of a waste of time.

It might be the same reason it isn’t performing as well in this country, like Let Me In it just doesn’t draw any attention to those who saw the original Swedish films and that just leaves the masses who were to stupid to know the Swedish films existed. Which is unfortunately the group of viewers who talks the least about the movies they watch.

Hollywood should stick to remaking movies that are at least two decades old, going back and remaking a movie that literally just left the theaters is a pretty big joke.

Dude, I’m currently on my second read of The Girl Who Played With Fire and it’s full of Lisbeth, 2nd and 3rd book are ALL ABOUT HER so please do some research before posting. Now, David Fincher WILL RETURN, he’s on the press tour all over Europe (Paris, Milan etc.), you don’t expect him to negotiate over his cell phone do you? Rooney/Daniel/Zaillian are all locked in.

whoa Matt, this is pretty embarrassing. like you, i haven’t read the books, but since you’re a journalist, it’s your job to research, and it’s apparant that the know-it-all Matt f***ed up! LOL. i’m sure you want to delete this news post now do you?

  • V.G.

You keep criticizing some books you haven’t even read. How is that possible? I love the trilogy, I love the way Larsson writes and the characters he has created. There is more to the story than what you see in adaptations. If you don’t like the books fine, but at least read them first. If you don’t want to read them even better, but stop judging.

I guess the people who wanted to see the film already watched the original film and are also the same people who only wanted to to see a guy get a dildo kicked up his ass once.

all you ever write matt is how poor the narrative of tgwtdt is and you havent even read the book? neither have i, im just sayin, thats some pretty damn horrible journalism

  • Sometimes my arms bend back

Matt, saying the ‘Girl who Played with Fire’ doesn’t really feature Lisbeth Salander is like saying ‘The Hobbit’ doesn’t really feature Bilbo Baggins!

She’s only the main bloody character for god sakes!!

Overall I think the film did pretty well considering the following:

    1) It’s R rated movie
    2) It was released at Christmas
    3) It features one of the more horrific rape sequences ever shown on film.

  • FireStarter

Matt, you’re a terrible journalist. A total tool. And, you have no taste in movies. How you got this job is amazing; to say the least.

DUDE the 2nd and 3rd books are completely about Lisbeth! She’s the center of both of the books! Why would you openly admit to not having read the books and then make a statement like that?

On another note, does the green lighting of the sequels mean we get to listen to you bitch about how they aren’t good books for the next 2-3 years? Because if so SIGN ME UP. Keep your opinions to yourself, asshole.

  • Slice

Kind of a hard sell shipping a repacked sandwich overseas when the still original is still fresh.

WOW. As just about everyone has already said, the sequels are completely focused on Lisbeth’s character revealing secrets from her past throughout both the 2nd and 3rd books. Why would you openly admit to not having read the books and then make a statement like that?

On another note, now that we know the sequels have been green lit does that mean we get to listen to you bitch about how the books aren’t good for the next 2-3 years? Because if so SIGN ME UP! • HKr

I think this comes down to the idea of …”If we don’t make these movies, somebody else will.”

  • NMphotog

There’s quite too many fanboys around here.

I order you all to read Gone With the Wind and the Last of the Mohicans before you are allowed to give an opinion of either movie adaptation.

    • Sometimes my arms bend back

I think it’s more a case of the author of the article making sweeping, incorrect statements about the franchise. I mean you don’t have to be a fan of the book to know Lisbeth is a major character, the clue is in the title ‘The GIRL who Played with Fire’.

I have no problem with Matt not wanting to read the books. However as a “journalist” he could spend at least five minutes on the Wikipedia site for the Millennium series before posting another news article on this franchise.

At least then it would appear he knew what he was talking about, which is really not too much to ask is it?

      • nmphotog

Would anybody be saying all of this if he were talking about Sherlock Holmes? How many people here read “The Final Problem”? I have, but it isnt necessary to express an opinion.

Oh and being a journalist…opinions arent journalism and Wikipedia isnt considered a worthwhile source in any circumstance…

  • matt

salander is heavily featured in both books. however, salander and blomkvist are not together for most of it. i think that is the issue that steve zaillian is trying to figure out since the high points of the new movie were the chemistry between craig and mara.

    Frosty,

if you ever want COLLIDER to be as reputable and respected in the film industry as, say, /Film or FirstShowing, go out and recruit some journalism majors from lauded programs such as Columbia, U. of Missouri or Northwestern. Between Matt Goldberg’s lazy research and your phony exclusives, people are taking note.

Also even though GWTDT isn’t a huge hit in the US, it has legs. Last weekend it only dropped 23% and it’s currently sitting at $76 domestic compared to its $90 mil budget. It will probably make $100 or close to it once it leaves theaters. It currently sits at $106 million worldwide. After home video sales it’ll make a profit for Sony.

This is a ridiculous article. Why would you write an article about a book and film franchise about which you know nothing? Maybe it is time to find a new career, you, Matt surely suck at this one.
