Legendary Pictures is currently at work on bringing Godzilla back to the big screen and giving him the feature film he deserves after the 1998 flop. Bleeding Cool has some new details to report on the project, which is slated to hit theaters in 2012. The biggest cause for excitement is that, “There’s going to be another monster, or monsters, that Godzilla will fight. Not having this goes against the ‘spirit of the character’.” If this is the case, then who should Godzilla square off against? Mothra? Megalon? Mechagodzilla?
Hit the jump for more details on how the new Godzilla is planning to stay true to the old Godzilla.
The new Godzilla is being compared to Batman Begins. I don’t know if this means a grittier Godzilla or if Godzilla will have a value he holds most dear and then completely betrays in the third act when he defeats the villain. Legendary is also planning to homage the traditional Godzilla character, which means a return to Godzilla’s more dinosaur like form as opposed to the giant iguana of the 1998 Roland Emmerich film. However, like Emmerich’s film, Godzilla will be a CG character in a live-action movie. Also, to the surprise of no one, the movie will be in 3D.

Brilliant. This is such good news, Godzilla without a adversary is like Bond with out a adversary, cool but kind of pointless. Godzilla, which is mix of city destruction, other colorful kaiju, and the usual sinister alien invaders and amazing mechs, and to deviate from that is to deviate from one of the most successful and unique film characters of all time.
As for who he should battle? I’d say Angillas, Godzilla’s first adversary who later would turn his ally, or Rodan, they could incorporate elements from the film Rodan, in which their are to Rodan’s.
It’s to soon for Mothra, Ghidorah, and Mechagodzilla, but if this film is sucessful Legendary should green light a remake of Mothra and Rodan, and then incorporate them into the Godzilla series alla The Avengers, building up to the return of Ghidorah.
Their are Japanese Godzilla reboots that attempt to bring in Mothra and Ghidorah to soon and thus they have less of a impact. Monsters like Anguirus, Varan, Baragon, etc. would be good starter enemies and still sell a but load of toys.
AWESOME NEWS!!!! I Love Godzilla man, Glad he is getting the right treatment now.
These are some things id like to see in the New Godzilla movie
- Godzilla to fight 1 monster but a New monster
- Bring in King Ghidorah for the Sequel
- This film needs to be serious an dark no stupid dry humor
- No Matthew Broderick
- No baby Godzilla’s
- Godzilla must have his Atomic Breath
- Godzilla must be indestructable to all Military actions
- Godzilla must Level at least more then 1 City, an Screw New York
Sorry New York is the most Over-Rated place ever, Send him to California, Florida, Texas, Hell send him to Mexico if he must go to New York it must be completely destroyed.
Long live Godzilla!
sources have said the Godzilla will not fight the US army, so I wonder if Godzilla will attack a city at all. wouldnt make sense for Godzilla to level a city and no military response from USA. If its a reboot in the vein of Batman Begins, just have to wonder if this film will take place on a undiscovered “monster” island. Godzilla will fight another powerful monster and of course kick its ass. Id like to see the other monster be the one to attack a city, Us army fights it but is unable to stop it, then Godzilla rises from the ocean gives that traditional killer ROAR. and fights the monster. They fight level most of the city, US airforce drops several dozen MOAB bombs to stop them, great explosions, tons of wreckage left over, parts of the other monster here and there, but no trace of Godzilla because he escaped to the sea. the end.
godzilla is the best monster
I can see both sides of the argument with regards to a second monster. In one sense I’d like to see a new or revamped monster but on the other hand the original, and deliciously dark Gojira had no need for a monstrous foe and is arguably the best to date.
I really don’t think we’ll be disappointed by Legendary on this. Considering Emmerich didn’t event bother watching an existing film before staring that abortion in 98 I think given that Legendary have openly committed to an authentic attempt and that the crux of Godzilla movies is not a difficult one to grasp, real fans will be genuinely pleased at least by their efforts to honour the legend.(Please God, don’t let me be wrong).
Personally, I’m looking forward to a fully CGI Godzilla too and I’m hoping Legendary come up with their own monster for him/her (depending which side of the fance you are) to fight so they can put their stamp on the heritage. Good luck Legendary,…screw this up and there’ll be hell to pay I reckon.
I am glad they are going back to the original godzilla I did not like the 1998 version at all
I rather watch the old movies than the new they should never have changed his look they were still trying to use the sound with the new look did not work.some things need changes some thoings we need to leave alone.
