KICK-ASS Star Aaron Johnson Eyed for Lead in GODZILLA Reboot

And the Godzilla news keeps on coming.  Earlier this week we had a couple of major developments regarding Warner Bros.’ upcoming Godzilla reboot, including the news that Frank Darabont has been brought on to perform a final rewrite of the script and a shortlist of actors in the running for the lead role reportedly include Henry Cavill, Scoot McNairy, and Caleb Landry Jones.  Well so much for that shortlist story, as word now comes that Warner Bros. has its eye on a different actor to lead the project: Kick-Ass star Aaron Johnson.  Hit the jump for more.

aaron-johnson-godzillaPer Deadline, Johnson is now the frontrunner to lead the Gareth Edwards-directed project as he has an offer for the role.  Being the smart guy that he is, Johnson won’t make a final decision on whether or not to take the job until Darabont turns in his polish of the script.  Though most know Johnson as the charming guy from Kick-Ass (and the upcoming sequel Kick-Ass 2), he’s done some fantastic work in other films as well, including playing John Lennon in Nowhere Boy.  Most recently he had an impressive turn in Joe Wright’s ambitious adaptation of Anna Karenina, and the fact that Johnson is being approached for the Godzilla lead tells me that the studio and Edwards are keen on filling this thing out with good-looking actors who are also, you know, talented.

The previous shortlist story that we reported on claimed that the studio was high on Cavill and Joseph Gordon-Levitt for the starring role in the film, while the “creative” choices were McNairy and Jones.  Gordon-Levitt passed on the gig a while ago, but Johnson seems like a solid choice.  We know next to nothing about the project at this point other than the fact that Edwards is going for a realistic tone with his take on the monster tale, but the test footage at Comic-Con last summer blew me away.

We should hear more soon as the film heads towards its March 14th production start-date in Hawaii in Vancouver.  Godzilla is set to hit theaters on May 16, 2014.
