Jay Baruchel (This is the End) is set to make his directorial debut on Goon: Last of the Enforcers, the follow-up to Michael Dowse’s (What If) 2011 hockey comedy Goon. Baruchel co-wrote the first film Evan Goldberg (The Interview) and is penning the script for the sequel alongside his writing partner Jesse Chabot. Goldberg will return as executive producer.

The first film followed Sean William Scott's Doug 'The Thug' Glatt, a bouncer-turned-minor league hockey player with a penchant for fist fighting. Per THR, Scott is set to reprise his role as the pugilistic puck slinger "in a story that sees his team, the Halifax Highlanders, reunite with a host of new players during a pro lockout."

I look forward to seeing what Baruchel can do as a director. In addition to being a solid writer writer, he's a skilled comedic actor, and has really had a chance to shine recently on his delightfully bizarre FXX series Man Seeking Woman. Baruchel directed an episode of Trailer Park Boys last year, and as he told me earlier this year at the Winter TCA press tour, he's also considering helming his adaptation of Random Acts of Violence. Of course, with Goon 2 production set to begin next month in Toronto and the second season of Man Seeking Woman on the horizon, we might have to wait a bit longer for the long-developed horror film.

In a recent Reddit AMA, Scott revealed he's been training with an MMA fighter for Goon 2, which means we can probably expect to see some pretty brutal fisticuffs in the sequel. Goon: Last of the Enforcers is scheduled to begin production in June.
