Author R.L. Stine’s series of Goosebumps books were a staple of nearly every 90s kid’s childhood.  They had just the right amount of darkness and creepiness while still being accessible, and the twist endings recalled episodes of The Twilight Zone.  The books spawned a cheesy but still enjoyable TV series of the same name, but director Rob Letterman (Gulliver’s Travels) is bringing the property to life again with a new feature film, and now the first Goosebumps movie images have been unveiled.  Jack Black plays Stine in the film, and the author’s creations unexpectedly come to life thanks to a teen neighbor (Dylan Minnette).  Subsequently, Stine must team up with his neighbor and daughter (Odeya Rush) before the numerous and varied monsters destroy their small town.

Hit the jump to take a look at the first Goosebumps images and to see what Black had to say about his take on Stine.  Goosebumps opens in theaters on August 7, 2015.

Speaking with EW, Black says that while he’s playing R.L. Stine, he views the film’s version as a wholly original character:

“This is obviously a fictionalized version of his life and nothing that happens in this movie actually happened to him, other than him writing all the books. So I felt like, I was just going to approach it as a character, doing what I thought was most dramatically interesting and right for what was needed. I also got to meet R.L. and he’s a really great guy. Really smart and funny and sweet. But I made [the character] more of a sort of curmudgeonly dark, brooding beast master. So from the very beginning, I was taking liberties. I think he’s cool with it though. [Laughs] He’s been on set and he actually did a little cameo.”
