The 2016 Gotham Independent Film Awards were held last night in New York City, and it was a good night to be involved with Moonlight. The stunning coming-of-age drama reigned supreme, taking home the honors for Best Feature, Best Screenplay, Best Ensemble, and the Audience Award. It’s surely another shot of momentum for the film on the awards circuit, as writer/director Barry Jenkins’ moving drama about a young homosexual black man finding his identity has been barreling through ever since it played big at Telluride and the Toronto International Film Festival. What does this mean for Oscar? Well, the Gotham Awards are voted on by a pretty small group of individuals so it’s not a huge precursor, but the last two Best Feature winners did go on to win the Best Picture Oscar.

Elsewhere at the ceremony, Isabelle Huppert took home the Best Actress trophy for her buzzworthy turn in Paul Verhoeven’s Elle, while Casey Affleck won Best Actor for his phenomenal performance in Manchester by the Sea. And excitingly, The Witch star Anya Taylor-Joy scored the Breakthrough Actor trophy for her tremendous turn in Robert Eggers’ unnerving horror film.
