GOTHAM Series to Feature the Riddler, Catwoman, Penguin and a Young Bruce Wayne

All we really knew about the upcoming Gotham series up until this point is that it would center on a younger version of Commissioner James Gordon and would not be featuring the Batman.  Now, we know that those villains will include, at the very least, the Riddler, Catwoman and the Penguin.  Scripted by Bruno Heller (The Mentalist), Gotham explores Gordon’s origins alongside the villains who made Gotham City famous, and takes place in a Gotham plagued with crime before the arrival of Batman.  We’ll also get to see Bruce Wayne himself, though not in the role fans are used to.  Hit the jump for more.
young-bruce-wayneDeadline confirms that Gotham, which has a series commitment, has been greenlighted for a pilot.  Danny Cannon (CSI) will direct and executive produce said pilot, and plans to set up the writers room mid-February with every intention of going to series.  During the ongoing TCA events, Fox chairman Kevin Reilly commented further on the series, specifically addressing the young Bruce Wayne’s role:

“The show will track Bruce from a child (around 12-year-old) until he puts on a cape (in the finale)… We will see how they get to become what they are as Gotham is teetering on the edge. It is an operatic soap with a larger than life quality.”

Unfortunately, no casting announcements have been made just yet, but now fans get to have fun speculating on just who should play the roles of Gordon, Riddler, Catwoman, the Penguin and yes, even a young Bruce Wayne.  Let us know what you think in the comments!

Rhys Wakefield (The Purge) would be a terrific Joker…

    • The Flobbit

      So would Crispin Glover.

      • LEM

Yeah he could go real creepy too.

      • The Flobbit

That and he looks the part.

      • The Flobbit

That and he looks the part.

    • FoonZeeS

      I agree with this.

Ever since I randomly saw The Purge and +1 back to back I’ve been a fan of Wakefield.

      I agree with this.

  • Daniel Olbrych

well, we know how it ends… “…until he puts on the cape (in the finale)…”

    • Ironic-Man

Where did you think it would go, you hipster fuck?

      • Daniel Olbrych

        somewhere clever.

      • Don’t come back

Unlike you, apparently, you walking cliche!

      • Strong Enough

        lmao

    • LEM

That worked so well for Smallville.

      • Daniel Olbrych

even more reason to avoid that as it’s conclusion. of course he is going to become batman, doesn’t mean we need to see that happen. gotham central is a great comic and would be a good series for a tv adaptation.

  • NICK НΛRT

so basically its dark and gritty smallville. meh

  • http://thenonessentials.blogspot.com/ Sean Chandler

I kind of like the idea of having a young Bruce Wayne, but as others observed, it’s Smallville for Batman (which ironically Smallville morphed out of a young Bruce Wayne series that never happened).

  • eternalozzie

Another super hero series without a super hero. wtf?

    • jack

But it’s not a superhero series. It’s a police procedural

      • Murdoch

Right! With Catwoman & Riddler & The penguin! Also known as “Making the most famous Rogue’s Gallery in all of comics the stars of the show” . . . . Oh and this clearly out of his depth guy trying to stop them all.

    • Steven

      AMEN.

This will be just another cop show but with a couple of comic book name drops here and there.

We’ve all seen what Arrow can produce on its budget, damn fine action scenes, terrific CGI and superheroes fighting villains. Imagine a Batman show like that with an added budget. But nope, this will most likely be another cheap cash grab like Agents Of Shite.

      • eternalozzie

But Arrow is directly about a specific hero, Green Arrow, and his team. This series is going to be Batman … but no Batman will be found. Batman’s villains are going to be there. It’s stupid to make the villains exist without their nemesis.

      • jack

It isn’t going to be about Batman. It’s going to be about the police and Gordon’s rise up the ranks most likely battling corruption and other police procedural tropes. Please read the article. I agree using Catwoman and Riddler isn’t that wise. They should use only the minor villains, but this isn’t a superhero show and isn’t about Batman

      • Steven

Like Agents Of Shite, the idea of focusing on smaller characters that have nothing to do with the major interesting characters is such a stupid trend,

      • The Bat

This is going to be a weird show. Because if Gordon does a good enough job fighting crime, there’s no need for Batman. On the other hand, I don’t need to see Gordon failing at fighting crime over and over again, until Batman finally appears, either.

      • Murdoch

VERY true! And if they are ALREADY introducing people who should be Bruce’s age (catwoman?) when he’s just a kid, are they going to do an Arrow-like “First came the original ______ then the more famous ______ took their place”? Fact is, this was already starting to sound like the god-awful butchering of all things Superman that was “SMALLVILLE”.

But then i read the ” . . . until he puts on a cape (in the finale)…”

NO THANK YOU. I ain’t fallin for that shit again. They’re probably going to have a season long chase to bring ONE villain down, only to resolve them in a half-assed way so that “THE GUY” can go and deal with them for good in the future.

      • Duder NME

It’s just another excuse for “writers” to execute another quip-fest to test their dialogue skills, all of which will fall flat. “TV is a writers’ medium”, my bat-butt.

    • Armond White is my master now

      Do you mean like NCIS:SHIELD?

      :-)

      • eternalozzie

NCIS at least has good writers …. Agents Of Suck does not.

      • winafred burkle

        They both suck

Hope this does well, but the Kevin Smith and Paul Dini idea for a young Bruce Wayne series would’ve been good too.

  • http://www.collider.com/ DNAsplitter

I think this has potential. If they focus on both Gordon’s younger years and Wayne’s childhood inner demons showing how they are both struggling at adapting at their new environments it could be an interesting show that will hold people’s attention. If they make it some what gritty, like the show Justified, it could be awesome.

  • belovedwarlord

How does it have a 12 year old Bruce Wayne and yet an active Riddler and Catwoman?

    • Doug_101

I can see how they might do Riddler, but Catwoman is definitely around Bruce’s age. Most of the costumed criminals appeared AFTER Batman arrived on the scene, so if these characters are going to be in costume it’s not going to make much sense.

    • Kaizokuman

They won’t be active, but it will show certain characters before they become who they do.

  • Jan

Justin Bieber as 12-year-old Bruce Wayne. Make it happen.

    • Strong Enough

why are you obsessed with the bieber?

      • Jan

I’ve been diagnosed with something that, in the medical community, is referred to as “Bieber Fever.”

      • Strong Enough

Hey his new album is FIRE

  • cimmerian

It maybe great, I don’t know. I just wish all DC tv was in the Arrow/Flash universe. I want an Arrow version of several batcentric characters and it will suck if the rights to those characters are tied up with Fox, Warner should have learned what a mistake that is from Marvel.

  • Ummm

The initial concept of following Gordon through the ranks (sans Bruce Wayne as a supporting character) intrigued me. It reminded me of “Gotham Central”, which was a phenomenal series.

But now we’re getting a Smallvilled Bruce too? I mean…I’m pretty sure Bruce spends the majority of training to become Batman outside of Gotham. Adding this unnecessary element really takes away from the potential of the series showing how a decent cop in a seemingly endless stream of corruption handles the deterioration of a city slowly slipping into madness. Exploring how the Falcone family and characters like Penguin and Black Mask fight for control of Gotham would’ve been great.

What happened? Did Fox lose its balls because they’re afraid people won’t watch unless we get some Batman side boob?

  • sense11

Well of course I’m going to watch it, good thing its on Fox and not CW

    YNWIM

    • winafred burkle

It will get cancelled quicker on Fox and the CW has a little show called Arrow that kicks ass

      • sense11

its OK, it certainly does not kick ass, Fox can go way darker with Gotham especially with shows like The Following and Almost Human on the network, its not a kids show

  • The Flobbit

I sincerely hope this is dark and compelling with great actors, excellent CGI, and sharp writing. I am loving the idea of a young Bruce Wayne and Joker, etc. I hope we get a crapload of origin stories.

  • Blitz

    Cancelled in 3,2,1..

  • LEM

It sounds like they’re ripping off Kevin Smith and Paul Dini.

    • sense11

Who gives flying fuckityfuck about Kevin Smith, he probably ripped off someone else

      • LEM

I have no clue if he was but him and Dini had a cool idea for a Batman(or actually Bruce Wayne) series that they went off on after seeing the commercial for the newest Arkham game.

    • sense11

Who gives flying fuckityfuck about Kevin Smith, he probably ripped off someone else

  • evandest

Paul Dano as Gordon… or James Ransone…

  • Lee Harvey Cobblepot

I don’t want to speculate. just go ahead, surprise me. Also… ugh, The Mentalist. That show is terrible. But I trust Cannon. We’ll see. I’m carefully optimistic, but I’m also not getting my hopes up.

  • RandomTask

Lots of people are saying ” cant have batmans villains with no batman” and ” I dont want to see an incompitent Gordon letting bad guys get away so Batman can deal wi them later.” Batman and his famous villains arent going to be the main parts of the show, sure Gordon might interact with them, but almost all of them are going to start as kids. Gordons going to have new characters that he WILL take down himself, but will not be Batmans main villians because they will stil be developing. Im stoked to see some classic villains past’s on screen, especially the Joker, how he gets so twisted yet brilliant. Gordon will learn of these characters later on in the show, and probably deal with the idea he cant stop these villains himself, hell will break loose and batman will be born. And people are also complaining about the dawn the cape bit, from when Bruce’s parents are killed to the point he becomes batman, there is a ton of space for good storytelling.
