First Official Images from THE GREAT GATSBY Featuring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan

     December 13, 2011

Production on Baz Luhrmann’s ambitious 3D adaptation of The Great Gatsby is currently underway in Australia, and today we’ve got our first look at official images from the film. We’ve seen a number of set photos featuring the cast all done up in their dapper Gatsby costumes, but these images give us our first official glimpse at stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, and Joel Edgerton. Everything we’ve seen from this adaptation so far has been pretty fantastic, and these images are no exception (everyone’s just so damn attractive). Hopefully we’ll get to see a trailer sometime soon to get a better idea of what Luhrmann has in store.

Hit the jump to check out the images. DiCaprio plays Gatsby, Mulligan plays Dasiy, Maguire is our narrator Nick Carraway, and Edgerton takes on mega-douche Tom Buchanan. The Great Gatsby opens in 3D on December 25th, 2012.

Why has Carey Mulligan been in everything? She isn’t that great and she only has two looks: I’m about to cry, and I was just crying 30 seconds ago but now I’m a bit happier.

Thank you. And I wouldn’t have as much of a problem if she was in different roles, rather than people always casting her in roles where she’s the object of everyone’s affection. You have to actually be attractive to play those characters.

This already looks fake bad…Carey Mulligan is no Daisy. It only requires anyone with the capacity to READ the book to get that.

And sorry Leo (great actor you may be) he’s no Jay Gatsby.

Must we bitch about everything? Jesus, people. Two pictures! Wait for some footage before we start calling people illiterate and horrible actors.

  • jack

i 100% agree….she’s good for something like drive where she has to look depressed all the time. In everything else she’s such a debbie downer. Not really a fan of hers

I’ve been teaching this novel for years, and I called DiCaprio as Gatsby and Maguire as Nick years ago. I’m not worried so much about the look as the adaptation. Will they include key scenes left out of previous versions? Let us hope so. Robert Redford was Jay Gatsby, but I think Leo can pull it off.

Carey is amazing actress. Little bit overrated about An Education, but at the same time was good that producers discovered her.

    honestly I saw at IMDB

Amanda Seyfried, Rebecca Hall, Keira Knightley, Blake Lively, Abbie Cornish, Michelle Williams, Natalie Portman, Eva Green, Anne Hathaway, Olivia Wilde, Jessica Alba and Scarlett Johansson were considered to play Daisy Buchanan

Carey Mulligan wins as Daisy Buchanan.
What I dont understand is the 3D thing…. what for 3D. if was Scarllet Johhanson boobs than someone would like to watch in 3D but… it’s a normal film.

    • James

Many respected 3D filmmakers believe it is capable of working in many genres including drama. Baz is a visuals guy, so I have above average faith in it.

      • Sara

Seriouslyl. Because I watched few movies that I actually fell 3D for real.
Avatar, Transformers 3 and Harry Potter ( the last one).
And Spy-Kids when I was young.
because I didnt see nothing in 3D at Tron only the subtitles were protruding from the screen.
Captain America yes amazing film, but nothing in 3D. Thor wasnt that good as Captain America, at the end a payed more for a 3D and wasnt really different from a normal movie.

the Budget: $127,000,000 (estimated) at IMDB… i dont know what is because of 3d technology but I think is a good part of it. I will this time hear what the critics say about 3D is necessary or not. Because they warned us with Captain America and Thor, and I didnt listen. I just dont want to pay more and have no real 3D experience at all. I already wear glasses, and then I have to put 3D glasses.

Reviews will help you avoid all the mediocrity. Also, a good 3D movie doesn’t have to be action-packed. I always feel more connected to the characters and story whenever I watch a good 3D movie. 3D enhances emotionally, not just visually.

Does anyone else think that Edgerton looks like Harvey Keitel?

    • Marco Polo

Keitel! Yes I thought, “oh really?” Who’s Mr. Blue?

Did Leo lose weight for the role? Anyone else think the first pic is million miles away from his look in j. Edgar??? He looks like his early 2000 look now, with less chubby face

  • Jane

Ugh, Carey Mulligan does not scream Daisy…

    You know who would though?

  • dakdak

Carey is AMAZING!!!!! im soooooo excited for this movie.

  • Les

Hey I was there on set when these pics were taken and this is going to look spectacular. The footage I saw was crisp and slick,it’s just a shame we have to wait till next year to see it.Everyone is working so hard to produce a stunning movie.
The casting was bang on the money!

Oh, I think Leo is one of the few men in Hollywood who can pull this off. Robert Redford is a tough act to follow, but Leo DiCaprio has the same elegance, level of talent, intelligence that the role of Jay Gatsby needs. Not even Brad Pitt could do better than Leo. I can’t wait.

Hi, Neat post. There is an issue with your site in web explorer, may test this? IE still is the market leader and a large part of other folks will pass over your great writing due to this problem.
