New Trailer for THE GREAT GATSBY Highlights the Film’s Eclectic Soundtrack

     April 4, 2013

Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for director Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby.  For those unfamiliar with F. Scott Fitzgerald‘s source material, the story centers on a would-be writer (Tobey Maguire) chasing the American dream who moves to New York City in the spring of 1922 and encounters a mysterious millionaire named Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio).  This new trailer has a heavy focus on the relationship between Gatsby and Daisy (Carey Mulligan), while also giving us a strong dose of Joel Edgerton‘s Tom Buchanan.  Again Luhrmann’s vibrant visuals look fantastic, but the trailer also showcases a bounty of original music that the director has commissioned for the film from artists like BeyonceAndre 3000Lana Del Rey, and Florence + The Machine.  There’s a strong Romeo + Juliet vibe in this trailer, and I’m very much looking forward to seeing this thing on the biggest screen possible.

Hit the jump to watch the new trailer and to take a look at the full soundtrack listing.  The film also stars Isla FisherJason Clarke, and Adelaide Clemens.  The Great Gatsby opens in 3D on May 10th.

And here’s the official synopsis for The Great Gatsby:

“The Great Gatsby” follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz, bootleg kings, and sky-rocketing stocks. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy (Carey Mulligan), and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton). It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without of the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.

Luhrmann is an incompetent director. No substance, just glossy cinematography with a bunch of corny overdramatic one-liners. Of course Chitwood would love it. Even the poster copies Jay-Z’s Watch The Throne album cover.

Today I learned Jay-Z owns the rights to gold decor.

Movie looks like a feast for the eyes and ears, with trademark drama. Can’t wait to see this in 3D, as it has the exact same visual style as Hugo, which as you all know validated 3D as a filmmaking tool in something other than straight up action/sci-fi/cartoons.

As a fan of CGI special effects in movies, I never thought I’d see The Great Gatsby for its digital effects shots, but this is almost on par with Avatar, lol.

Yeah, he sucks. You’re a much better director. Link to one of your films do we can all watch it.

This trailer is about 1000 times better than the first one. I actually kind of want to see this now, but this is one of those where I will actually see what the critics say once its out. There still had to be a reason they delayed it from the Oscar season.
