New Trailer for GREEN LANTERN Starring Ryan Reynolds

     May 4, 2011

Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for the superhero tentpole Green Lantern.  Ryan Reynolds stars as Hal Jordan, the first human ever selected for the Green Lantern Corps: “A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers.”  The movie also stars Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, Angela Bassett, and Tim Robbins.  Martin Campbell (Edge of Darkness) directed the comic book adaptation.

This trailer offers everything you’ve been waiting to see: character moments for Hector Hammond (Sarsgaard), Carol Ferris (Lively), Kilowog (voiced by Michael Clarke Duncan), and first looks at Amanda Walker (Bassett) and the Guardians of the Universe.  I’ll admit that the CG on the Guardians looks kind of crappy, but there’s so much potentially great stuff in this trailer that I’m willing to suspend by disbelief a little further.  I have no idea if this film is going to work, but I admire its ambition. Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Green Lantern opens in 3D on June 17.  Watch the trailer after the jump.

Here’s the official synopsis for Green Lantern:

In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers. But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan. Hal is a gifted and cocky test pilot, but the Green Lanterns have little respect for humans, who have never harnessed the infinite powers of the ring before. But Hal is clearly the missing piece to the puzzle, and along with his determination and willpower, he has one thing no member of the Corps has ever had: humanity. With the encouragement of fellow pilot and childhood sweetheart Carol Ferris (Blake Lively), if Hal can quickly master his new powers and find the courage to overcome his fears, he may prove to be not only the key to defeating Parallax… he will become the greatest Green Lantern of all.  The movie also stars Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, Jay O. Sanders, Temuera Morrison, Taika Waititi, Jon Tenney, Angela Bassett, and Tim Robbins.

I am not feeling this. If that’s the best trailer they could come up with, this movie may be in trouble.

Compare this to the trailer for Captain America. Now that film looks like something worth watching!

  • jokerface

I think the effects look awesome =)

  • lance’s bro

Lance please tell us more about your feelings….

  • Alex H

Still doesn’t look good. I’m sorry, but I’m not excited about this movie at all. I feel like I should be, but I’m not.

  • bobbins

    THE TRAILER’S GONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Lance

I’m feeling pretty good, bro. But the people who made this film shouldn’t be.

  • Griz

Omg…..the guardians of the universe look like the martians from “Mars Attacks!”

  • JLC

I’m of two minds about this. I almost wish that the first film had been kind of a “Greatest American Hero” type thing (not as silly, of course), where Hal is learning to use the ring and isn’t yet aware that he’s part of a bigger Corps. Then they could use the sequel to introduce the wider universe.

However, based on what I’ve seen, I’m not sure we’ll ever get a sequel, so I guess I’m okay with going for broke out of the gate.

  • SupahDupah

Reminds me of the trailer for the last Star Trek movie. Same style. Could be very good!

  • Edward Lee

I’m a huge Lantern fan, but I’m worried about all of the CG. About half of that looked convincing, and the rest looked very video-gamish.

  • battleangel

I’m with JLC – this is gonna be a really cool one-film-only outing. I definitely dig the ambition. Will be shocked and absolutely amazed if it hangs together well enough to pass by American audiences and start a franchise.

  • Bigfiction

Don’t forget the CG isn’t finished. They just recieved a multi-million dollar budget bump. So take it easy… Just wait

    • joerobot

@Bigfiction The recent funds given to the film are speculated to be for a 3D conversion, since the film was originally not intended to be released in more than a 2D/Digital format.

I don’t know….based on the previews I didn’t think Thor looked all that great, and it’s been getting great reviews. It’ll depend on the cast and the story and how that comes together. The CG looks good enough for common audiences to accept. Visuals aren’t everything. I do agree though that shitty CG takes you out of the picture, but I didn’t like the Wolverine movie because of the story, not because of the shitty CG claws. And like someone said, they’re spending money to try to improve the effects. I’m still interested to see how it turns out.

  • DopeTim

Green Lantern is my favorite super hero, I love Ryan Reynolds, Mark Strong is one of the best actors working today and Martin Campell is an AWESOME Director….So why does this movie look like that!? it looks like a video game if i wanted to watch a video game i would buy the Video Game…my god parallax looks like galactus in FF2

  • J.R.

I want someone to explain me something…….. you guys think that the CGI looks wrong but please understand that the suit-mask are energy projection on the body so i would like to know how a E.P. does look in a HD camera? i believe it would look the same as we have seeing in every trailer, ok the guardians look like toys and the Corp to but we have to understand that this days everything will be done in CGI and not even AVATAR can surpass the cartoony fake look until sometime in the next 5 years or 10 maybe…………. there one solution for this just shoot everything in CGI and the throw a huge shadow on every environment on OA! just look at the fighting scene in THOR with the Snow-people or HULK (the 1st one) against HULK-DOGS!

  • James

Well the special effects aren’t finished….thats for sure…but i don’t (personally) think this movie would be good….maybe entertaining but not great…the trailer looks cool,,,very interesting…but i don’t feel good about this movie…its weird that movies with bad trailers (like Thor) turn out to be good…Thor was brilliant…and movies with good trailers, like GL, turn out to be bad….just an observation….

  • Dogg

    Looking pretty Fantastic-4-ish to me.

  • James

The trailer looks good…except that the visual effects aren’t finished..they still look like a videogame…well some of them…but the problem is..I keep feeling it wont be good…i know I shouldn’t judge it because its not out yet…but for some reason some movies with good trailers turn out to be bad…and movies with bad trailers (like THOR) turn out to be more than great….just an observation….

  • Terry

POS! Sorry but I ain’t feeling this crap like I ain’t feeling Thor which I know will bomb like a son of a bitch this weekend. What a fucking waste.
And what is engulfing the city? A goddamn, pissed off sewer leak. Jesus Christ.
I would rather be eating humus and black olives with Osama when he got ass capped then sit through this Sci Fi Channel quality BS.

  • Antinick

It is an amazing trailer! Thor was a bore. Hal and Carol will make every cbm couple put to shame, or at least a lot more shame to Thor and Jane! Green Lantern has everything! The actin, sci-fi, drama and pure epicness! This is the movie to beat this summer! And we all must watch it! Just IMAGINE THE MONEY SPENT ON THE SEQUEL! JUST IMAGINE THE CGI!! If they did this with “so little”, just imagine the next installment! HOLY HELL!

  • alex

looks epic cant wait to see this movie

  • joe

The CG on the guardian’s looks reeeeeeaaaallly shitty and I’m sorry but I think Hector Hammond is a seriously stupid-looking villain but otherwise it looks like a lot of fun

  • Steve Rudzinski

I think this looks amazing and fantastic and perfect and every other positive word I can come up with. Yes to everything.

  • danielplainview

the trailer looks okay, but the effects are bothering me. i agree with the people that in some scenes, Ryan Reynolds and other CG characters, looks very video game-ish. i agree with Steve that this film has a lot of similarities with THOR because both films are dealing with things out of this world, but THOR somehow managed to make you believe in the world, and there lies the great accomplishment of THOR. mixing out of this world and real world(raise your hands if you were like me, shocked at how they manage to make THOR be in the same world as Iron man’s techy universe).

but then again, this is from the director of Casino Royale. there are instances where a not so great director manages to make a great film. Martin Campbell did it with Bond 21.

  • Rashy

Looks like a glazed doughnut of crap!!!

  • Caterina Borselino

The new trailer of the GREEN LANTERN is really nice the trailer of this movie is looking a super power movie,Ryan Reynolds is looking very nice in this costumes.

  • Migz13

I’m still going to see this no matter what and reserve my judgement until I finish the whole thing. I’m hoping this would be one of those movies where it showed pretty weak trailers but the actual product is solid gold.

  • gee boy

i jizzed! that was so epic! rooting for this one for a superhero summer box-office movie!

  • Andrew Sanders

    Superb new trailer.
Being a long-time GL & Sinestro fan i’m excited to see the movie.
I really hope it does well at the box office,as i want to see Mark Strong’s Sinestro go bad in the sequel.

Thor was brill,…i definitely won’t be catching Capt America-sorry but it looks dull.

  • Dedpool

Haters still gonna hate, but this was much improved over the last trailers and definitely made me even more hopeful this will be good. If nohing else it will be different than all the other CBMs causeits in space.
