A few days ago, we posted Entertainment Tonight’s Green Lantern teaser as part of their special about director Martin Campbell’s much-anticipated take on the popular DC Comics classic. Well, fans rejoice: the full trailer has just been released. Starring a pumped up Ryan Reynolds and a brunette Blake Lively, as well as Peter Sarsgaard and Mark Strong, the movie will hit theaters on June 17, 2011. Until then, expect with more photos and footage.
The tone seems light and the humor punctuated with Ryan Reynolds’ on-the-beat delivery, while the costumes look pretty darn cool. As far as adaptations go, this feels exciting and will surely garner new Green Lantern fans along the way. Hit the jump to watch the trailer and leave your thoughts in the comments:
The full trailer will debut in theaters this Friday prior to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part. It’s going to look even better on a big screen!

In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers. But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan. Hal is a gifted and cocky test pilot, but the Green Lanterns have little respect for humans, who have never harnessed the infinite powers of the ring before. But Hal is clearly the missing piece to the puzzle, and along with his determination and willpower, he has one thing no member of the Corps has ever had: humanity. With the encouragement of fellow pilot and childhood sweetheart Carol Ferris (Blake Lively), if Hal can quickly master his new powers and find the courage to overcome his fears, he may prove to be not only the key to defeating Parallax…he will become the greatest Green Lantern of all. The movie also stars Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, Jay O. Sanders, Temuera Morrison, Taika Waititi, Jon Tenney, Angela Bassett, and Tim Robbins.

Love it!
Looks much worst than expected. CGI effects are far from finished and I just can’t stand Reynolds being himself. Do we have another Fantastic 4 here?
I think it’ll come down to the storyline. If the storyline is bland then the movie is going to suck.
Wicked! I like the visual feel a lot. It will look better on the big screen, just like AVATAR became more photo real looking.
Looks good to me! Can’t wait to see it (the trailer) at Harry Potter on Saturday! I will agree the CGI looks a bit odd. But maybe it’s just (still) a rough cut.
This looks one notch above “Batman and Robin” on the terrible scale, complete with bad visual design and hammy acting. No thanks.
I don’t know, I just don’t know. I have to believe that those effects are not in their final version.
Like a 2003 version of HULK
What do you mean? 2003′s Hulk was awesome (the CGI character, not the movie)
No, both CGI Hulks sucked!! Lou Fariggno where are you?
Exactly. Where was he. CGI looks bad here two, but Reynolds is hot and funny, but to me Lively is bland. The “Cowboys and Aliens” trailer looked better.
Get over it.

I’m kinda thinking Warner Bros rushed to get a trailer out there to build upon current buzz. (Also maybe due to Reynolds recent Buried role and harry potters release). That trailer looked really slapped together and things look verrrry rough. I highly doubt those effects will be around when the film is released. This is merely to wet appetites, remember this is the studio that invented the comic book reboot with Batman Begins… This is merely to keep the green lantern franchise on the map for 2011, I bet well see a more serious tone trailer coming soon, as well as a goofy toned one (this is ryan reynolds after all) and a much better production value all around.
There’s definitely a method to releasing that quality trailer this early. Obviously they’re are marketing time frames, and its important to get trailers in front of big tentpoles like Warner is doing with this and their Harry Potter franchise. It’s also for tracking purposes and even though the trailer isn’t what we all had hoped, it does two things: 1. Gets the word out for all the Ryan Reynolds fans that this is coming (Green Lantern isn’t the most well known comic character, and RR fans don’t necessarily overlap with Green Lantern Comic book market) 2. It tests the potential audiences reaction to tone, they have a market where they’re is a character with a cult-like following and serious tone being starred in by a movie star mainly known for comedy and goofy reactions. They’ve mixed the two in this trailer and I think they are reading reactions from this admittedly sloppy trailer to see in which direction their future marketing should head. Goofy comedy with some neat action OR serious action comic book with some comedic frosting. This is obviously just a theory but there’s no way that was the trailer that was supposed to be Warner Bros best foot forward, I really think this a test piece thrown together by a nervous studio head.

Effects really don’t look as bad in 1080p though. Check it out.
Yes they do. They really, really do.
Generic, boring civilian costumes that don’t match a world with superhero costumes, Hammond looked dumb, hes not the elephant man he a supervillian, he need to look semi campy. And Ryan Reynolds comes of about as heroic as Daniel Tosh. Here a good formula Warner Brothers, take risk on visionary directors because when you do it pays off.
Yeah but then they would lose their illusion of creativity.
you know Campbell did Casino Royale?! he may not have a name like Del Toro or JJ Abrams, but Campbell did the film Casino Royale. i repeat, Casino Royale!
So, what about it?
What’s so great with Casino Royale?
I really loved this teaser! Looks fantastic in HD. I could care less about the bitching and complaining from some people. The CGI is looking quite good even at this stage in post production. You can tell which shots have had the most work. Such as the Oa scenes for example. They completely nailed Sinestro’s look!! Tomar-Re also looks great. I suspect future trailers will be more grander and epic. But I was very impressed by what I saw.
Fucking Awesome!
one word: eek.
I know there still tweeking the CGI but I think it looks pretty cool. The tone seemed light but not too light.
As long as it isn’t stupid like the 30% of dumbness in SPIDER-MAN 2.
Other than The Dark Knight, Spiderman 2 is the only other 4 star comic based movie. Film critics score, not mine. Spiderman 3 was a festering sore. Simply, because something has nice effects, doesn’t mean it’s a good movie. About 30% of the storyline in the Spidey comics is centered around Pete, MJ and their relationship. Kudos to Raimi for making the second best comic movie of all time in Spiderman 2 and not caving to the mouth breathers and cramming needless effects and discombobulated action sequences that bogged down Spiderman 3.
Ericstreibich, I have to believe that the original Superman: The Movie (1978) received some four star reviews, and averaged maybe a fraction of a star less overall. If you haven’t watched it since the recent superhero movies came out (i.e. Spiderman, Batman Begins) or haven’t seen it before, I would urge you to watch it or revisit it. It is pretty astounding, really, how a film over thirty years old still stacks up with (and in most cases actually tops) more current fare (in acting, scripting, and yes, even the special effects have stood the test of time). Superman did 32 years ago what it took Sony until 2002 to accomplish with Spider-man, and that is saying something. In that regard, Superman will never be touched in the pantheon of comic hero movies. Though, I admit, Heath Ledger’s recent turn Joker is undoubtedly the most diabolical comic villain portrayal ever.
Hooked me just fine.
Looks great. The challenge will certainly be tone. How many super heroes from intergalactic organization movies have their been anyway? As far as the CG goes story and character cover a multitude of FX sins.

At this stage of the game, the effects are probably not going to change much if at all. Especially since they’ve released a trailer.
We’ll see.
remember the Avatar teaser? a lot of people thought we will get another Zemeckis animated film(only this time with live action scenes as well). then the theatrical trailer came
True, true.
For these superhero movies to be any good, they have to be the vision of an impassioned individual. This reeks of design by committee. No evidence here that anyone had the balls to take it seriously and not go for the cheap laughs.
I’m extremely disappointed with this trailer. The visual effects look like sh*t, and Ryan Reynolds looks like he’s going to be the bad choice I thought he was. Green Lantern is a badass character…not a comedic one. I pray this turns out to be better than it looks.
One thing you should remember is that he is BECOMING Green Lantern! so maybe he won’t be a bad ass at first, but in a sequel I think he will be what you are wanting to see…people thought the same way about Thomas Jane in Punisher…everyone said he wasn’t bad ass enough when they don’t realize he becomes The Punisher at the end.
Main Point: Green Lantern probably won’t turn into a bad ass with no fear until the end or in the sequel…if things don’t change the way you want it to be than sucks to be you. sorry
“so maybe he won’t be a bad ass at first, but in a sequel…”
No. He better be in this one, or there won’t be a (successful) sequel.
Most likely it will be at the near end of the film of the first.
Im talking about him being more bad ass through out the film.
He is obviously not going to be from start to finish on this one.
You can tell in the trailer that in some scenes he looks more serious then the other scenes…I bet you and Alex that you will be happy at the end of Green Lantern.
Be greatful you see Green Lantern at all on screen…movies always have tweaks to characters…may i mention The Joker? I have never seen a joker like that before and it was amazing, also with The Penguin from Danny DeVito…
I want to make sure you read this…you will be pleased by Green Lantern when you see it…don’t strongly judge it after just seeing two mins and 30 seconds
No, it’s ok. I’m just saying that . I’m really looking forward to this one, and I don’t wanna get disapointed. So I hope to see a badass GL soon, in this very first movie.
Update: LOL, I think there was some trouble with html in my comment. I’ll leave it like this, just for fun.
Don’t know what you guys are on about, I think it looks alright.
It’s great to see a really fantastical superhero after the relatively grounded Batman and Iron Man films.
This trailer looks like a low grade SciFI-Channel series. Complete bomb, you can bank on that. They should of went with the Black Green lantern. I for one, am getting tired of 99% of all hero’s being White. I understand that most of these were created in the age of segregation, but come on.
*Should’ve
Anyone that screams for the black green lantern (John Stewart) claiming they are sick of white superheroes is about as racist as they come. I suppose Superman and Wonder Woman should be black as well? There are black heroes, and white heroes and heroes without skin…dont hate a hero because of their skin color. If you have a problem with the green lantern or superman or heaven forbid Batman being white…maybe you should locate your passions somewhere else, as the comic book world is not for you…
what’s with the synopsis talking about Parallax. they wouldn’t introduce the villain in the jordan origin story
Yes they would. Parallax is tied into Hal’s origin in this story.
wow…all that’s missing is a volleyball scene with Val Kilmer.
looks pretty lousy. daredevil lousy.
how do you lose an audience? when you make your human characters CG.
.. when you make your human characters CG-cheap.
This looks awesome! Much better than I expected. Granted, I was never a fan of the comic so I suppose my opinion doesn’t account for much.
It does, don’t sell yourself short.
Just don’t sell yourself, got arrested for that once.
Grounded Batman, don’t know where he’s going Superman and out of this world bad CGI Green Lantern…..JLA will never be made. I’m already over this film and waiting for The Flash.
meh.
In the beginning I was all for the CGI suit, could work if done well…and sadly its not. Shows signs of the weakest CGI effects this side of mid 90′s. Looks like the suit has no weight and natural existence with the rest of the scenes. ERG! then to top it off Ryan Reynold is way too Ryan Reynold for his own good. Dont get me wrong I like a good quip here and there and no one can deliver them like he can, but I smell Blade Trinity all over again, and it stinks.
I’m impressed. Still the lamest kick ever
can someone please get blake lively out of this movie? she delivered like one line in the trailer, and it was awful….i want this movie to be good, but i fear the opposite
Cliched! It’ll make enough to BARLEY recoup its production cost.
Oh and what’s up with them TARD headed villains? Jesus, what a waste.
this’ll probably end up like Ghost Rider
very dissapointed. don’t know if I just saw a sequal to fantastic four or ghost rider?
NOTHING good about it.
I was hoping WB DC would have turned things around – guess not.
Kinda has that “Howard The Duck” vibe…
When are they going to do WONDER WOMAN? Can it be that hard to find a Lynda Carter type that can act??
When are they going to do WONDER WOMAN? Can it be that hard to find a Lynda Carter type that can act??
WOW. IT LOOKS STUPID AS SHIT. WAY TO FUCK UP GREEN LANTERN YOU ASSHOLES.
Ok the movie looks ok but they messed up on the main character Ryan I love comic books (Green lantern not my favorite) and the movies but Hal Jordan was a serious guy Ryan Reynolds was perfect for the Flash (the flash was funny, fast and witty). Now here we have him as a funny Green Lantern and when they make a Justice League which they will. You will have Green Lantern and the Flash trying to be the funny man so to me the castings was all wrong but that’s just me I will watch it and hope for the best.
Geez, quit freaking out about the CGI! The studio has almost half a year to polish everything out. Early trailers like this are only about creating awareness; no movie (particularly CGI-heavy movies like sci-fi and comic book movies these days – and this is both) ever looks completely finished this early on in the editing process. Hell, I’m impressed they’ve got as much principal photography ready as they do to even make this preview possible. Most previews eight months before release date are like a title flashed up on the screen with exciting music and a release date (lCaptain America’s “debut” at Comic Con, anyone?) Chill out!
