Rumor: John Krasinski Up for Star-Lord in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY; Isaiah Mustafa, Brian Patrick Wade, and Dave Bautista Vie for Drax the Destroyer

Earlier today we added Michael Rosenbaum to the shortlist to play Peter Quill (aka Star-Lord) in Guardians of the Galaxy alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jim Sturgess, and Zachary Levi.  One more possibility has surfaced for Star-Lord, but the casting rumors have branched out with a shortlist for Drax the Destroyer.  First up: CBM hears that Marvel is “still high on” John Krasinski for Star-Lord, a “master strategist and combat expert who wears an ability-enhancing suit and pilots a psychically-linked ship.”  Marvel had their eye on Krasinski for Captain America once upon a time.  Although that didn’t work out the studio is still understandably keen on Krasinski.  Peter Quill is set up to be the central character in James Gunn‘s adaptation of the Marvel comic.

For Drax the Destroyer, Marvel is reportedly looking at Isaiah Mustafa, Brian Patrick Wade, and Dave Bautista.  Interesting list: Mustafa is best known as the Old Spice Guy and Bautista is a former WWE professional wrestler.  Wade by comparison is just your typical actor—given his unspectacular resume, we can conclude Marvel is not seeking big names to play Drax, a superhuman warrior created to defeat Thanos.  Hit the jump for character bios.

Wikipedia has this backstory for Star-Lord:

star lord

“Peter Quill is born during an unusual astronomical phenomenon when many of the planets align. Seeing no resemblance, the man who believed he was Quill’s father accuses his wife Meredith of infidelity and attempts to kill the infant, but dies of a sudden heart attack. Quill is raised by his single mother until she is killed by an alien. Quill is placed in an orphanage but escapes and eventually becomes a trainee NASA astronaut. An alien entity called the Master of the Sun eventually visits the space station that Quill and other astronauts are inhabiting, and offers the mantle of Star-Lord (an interplanetary policeman) to a worthy candidate. Quill volunteers, but is rejected in favor of a colleague he once treated badly.

Quill is outraged, and NASA orders his return to Earth and discharge for his conduct. Instead, he steals a scoutship, returns to the space station, and takes his colleague’s place. Quill becomes Star-Lord, with the Master of the Sun first creating an illusion in which the character is able to find and kill the aliens that murdered his mother to free him of his past. Equipped with a sentient vessel called “Ship”, Quill commences his role as Star-Lord.”

And the origin story for Drax:

“While driving through a desert with his wife and daughter, Arthur Douglas’ car is attacked by a spaceship piloted by Thanos, who thinks the humans have seen him. His daughter, Heather, survives the crash and is adopted by Thanos’ father, Mentor, and raised on Titan. She later becomes Moondragon.

Needing a champion to combat the threat from Thanos, Mentor and the Titan god Kronos capture Douglas’ spirit and place it in a powerful new body. He is rechristened “Drax the Destroyer,” and his sole purpose is to kill Thanos.”

    Bautista. Win.

    Krasinski. Fail.

I hope it is either Krasinski or Levitt. That would be awesome. Concerning Batista..meh. He did nothing for The Man With the Iron Fists.

This shows how poorly your values are when it comes to films. Never take quantity over quality. Krasinski is an incredible actor, while Dave Bautista on the other hand is of the The Rock/Stone Cold Steve Austin archetype with even more absymal acting ability, or entire lack thereof.

I Think Star-Lord should be narrowed down to Rosenbaum, Krasinski, and Gordon-Levitt, although, I’d like to see Gordon-Levitt stay within the DC universe, as it fits his acting style infinitely better.
Drax should go to someone who can provide character depth, in addition to the physical stature.

Hey I’m just going off from the NEW candidates in this article. I stick by what said. I think Bautista would be the most ideal from the 3.

Krasinski.. no fucking way do I see him as action star. Like someone said earlier,”zero action personality.”

Not sure of the age range for star-lord but I think Bradley Cooper could do well.

I mean he DID barely lose the green lantern gig to reynolds (and I think he would’ve done a better job) but there’s potential for him in the comic cinema world.

So is everyone with a penis in hollywood up for the role of Star Lord? Tomorrow we’ll announce all 4 male cast members of the Big Bang Theory, Charlie Sheen, Shia LaBeouff, Christian Bale, Seth MacFarline, Channing Tatum, Ryan Gosling, Ryan Reynolds, Zac Effron, Joel McHale, Jon Cryer, Armie Hammer, Mario Lopez, and a crap ton of other actors will be on the “short, never ending infinite” list of actors up for the role of Peter Quinn aka Star Lord.

This comment doesn’t make any sense. Would you like them to choose only 2 actors and pick one of them ? If they want a strong lead they have to test as many actors as possible, that’s the case with every high profile job in Hollywood. I think a shortlist of 6-8 actors is actually not a lot. Shows how much you actually know mr. Peter Quinn and Seth MacFarline. On another note Krasinski would be a way better choice than Sturgess. But for me Joel Edgerton would be a winner

Fuck off and mind your own goddamn business you cock sucking piece of shit.

I would say Joel Edgerton or JGL should get the part. Both would bring something different to the role but be great in it.

As for Drax, I wanted Vin Diesel. He is the perfect choice. The Rock would be my second choice but hes rumored for Lobo already, which would be a dumb movie imo. Out of this list of actors I wouldnt want any. Maybe Bautista as a last resort.

Oh, and Seth Macfarlane for Rocket Raccoon please. Andy Serkis is my second choice.

        Well that escalated quickly.

Well my input as a comic book fan is next to none as I don’t read comics and don’t know much of anything about this Guardians thing. But as a fan of the marvel movies and movies in general, Krasinski is just not cut out for this role. I’m a fan of the guy and hope he gets enough roles in Hollywood movies, but unless I’ve got absolutely the wrong impression of this, he isn’t a superhero.

Personally, I’d bet my hat Marvel wants JGL the most because he’s someone who would lend credibility to a movie that very few people have any insight about beforehand. This, along with the Ant-Man movie, have very low awareness levels in the broad movie going public. Big names would help distribute some of the risk and JGL has become a big name in the past few years. I doubt this Krasinski thing pans out but they definitely need a name actor for the lead role. Purely for money purposes.

Krasinski has like no action star personality.

This movie will not do well.
