GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2: James Gunn Talks Peter Quill’s Father, How Much Thanos Fits into the Sequel, and More

It was clear that Marvel Studios was happy with Guardians of the Galaxy when it went ahead and announced a release date for Guardians of the Galaxy 2 a week before the first film even hit theaters.  James Gunn returns to write and direct the follow-up, and despite the fact that he’s been on a worldwide press tour for the last month, Gunn admitted that he spent the Guardians opening weekend already working on the sequel.  July 28, 2017 might seem like a ways off, but given that every Marvel movie is a puzzle piece on a larger board, it’s no surprise that story and character elements for Guardians of the Galaxy 2 are already being hammered out.

Though it’s obviously early days for the Guardians follow-up, Gunn recently spoke a bit about what fans can expect in the sequel, specifically revealing a key piece of information regarding Peter Quill’s father and discussing how significantly Thanos will figure into the plot.  More after the jump.

guardians-of-the-galaxy-2-chris-prattTalking with Empire Online, Gunn said that he and the higher-ups at Marvel (ie. Kevin Feige) made sure they had worked out Peter Quill’s parentage before they made Guardians:

“There have been a lot of documents passed around about who Peter Quill’s father is between a select two or three of us. That’s been part of the plan since the beginning, that’s something I had to work out before we shot the screenplay. We wanted to make sure Yondu’s place in everything made sense and it does, so it’s all very specific stuff.”

While comics readers know that the canon answer is J’son, the Emperor of the Spartoi Empire, Gunn reveals that in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Quill’s father is someone different:

“It’s definitely not the character who it is in the comics, I’ll say that much.”

guardians-of-the-galaxy-thanosThe Big Bad Thanos made his first ever in-movie appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy, but 10 films in and the poor guy still doesn’t have a single Infinity Stone.  Fans have been anticipating Thanos’ rise since the end of The Avengers, but Gunn was rather tight-lipped when it came to revealing whether he will figure into the plot of Guardians of the Galaxy 2:

“He will show up [in the sequel] if he helps our story and he will not show up at all if not. Thanos is not the most important thing in Guardians 2, that’s for damn sure. There’s the Guardians themselves and other threats the Guardians are going to be facing that are not Thanos… I think Thanos has been lonely for a long time. He can handle it. He’s used to his loneliness. He’s got some other kids out there. He’s got to look after them. Nebula’s probably the sweetest of them, which tells you what his kids are like…”

The common assumption is that the Guardians will finally cross paths with the Avengers when it comes time to battle Thanos—most likely in The Avengers 3—but a timetable for that is unclear.  Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is slated for release on July 28, 2017 but a release date for Avengers 3 has yet to be revealed.  The folks at Marvel know exactly when all of this will come to a head, but fans are still in the dark.  There’s an untitled Marvel movie slated for release on May 3, 2018, so might that finally be the date when the Avengers and Guardians team up on a grand scale to square off with the Mad Titan?  Time will tell.  For now, we’ve got Guardians 2 to look forward to.

The movie was so good. Saw it again yesterday and enjoyed it even more. So funny and smart.

    • Adam Warlock

Sounds to me like Adam Warlock is the most likely candidate, and seeing how he escaped from his cocoon in the Collector’s vault, and being sort of an “angel of light” as Quill’s mother said, I think he’s almost certainly his dad. Plus, how else would they bring in the all important Soul Gem?

  • Vulcan

I didn’t know if I was the only one that caught Nebula’s comment to Gamora about “Out of all of our siblings, I hated you the least.” I thought it meant that Thanos has more “children,” but I haven’t seen any site mention that until Gunn’s comments.

  • MIXTER

I think this would be a perfect role for Nathan Fillion! Peter Quills mannerisms reminded me of Fillion quite a bit. Also, Gunn has worked with him on Slither so be good to see them work together again.

    • Vulcan

Nathan Fillion was the big prisoner that Groot shot his branches into. I doubt he will come back. I never understood this demand that Fillion be in every Marvel Movie, he’s ok, but not the greatest actor ever.

      • Steve McCort

What about Fillion as Nova (Richard Rider)? eh? EH!?

      • MIXTER

Didn’t remember him in that film. Weird, but i’m not one of the ones demanding he be in every marvel film, I only moderately like the marvel films, can take or leave em, some i wish i did leave. I just put the slither/gunn connection with the fact that Quill was kinda similar to Fillions usual character types. I’m no huge Fillion fanatic either, he doesnt bother me though, but he is underused.

      • Oliver Queen

You probably don’t remember him because he was the large blue skinned alien and only did the voice, i myself didn’t even recognize his voice when watching the film and only found out after looking up the credits.

why do all nerds have a fucking hard on for nathan fillion? he fucking sucks.

      • MIXTER

I’m indifferent to Fillion, but it sounds like he’s upset you more than he upsets me! Whats your beef sports fan?

      • Viteh

His badassery stimulates our testes. No homo.

His singing in Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog touched my heart.

    2015- avengers 2

    2016- cap 3

    2017- gotg 2

I’m good. Ant-man, Dr strange, whatever they put out I’ll check out but I know for the next three years I am set for marvel movies with these 3.

    • MIXTER

Snap! And i finally watched Amazing spidey 2 last night, and maybe i’m the only one but i really liked it! Gutted if they don’t build on that world.

      • Oliver Queen

You’re not i love it! I saw it in cinemas back in May and people said, give it time and you’ll start to hate it but that’s not true, i love this film and i’m sticking to it.

    • Mike

I love how right after an amazing new property comes out that everyone loves, people somehow aren’t excited for the next new property. All I can think about is what a Doctor Strange, Inhumans, Black Panther, or Shazam movie might end up looking like.

      • Vulcan

I’m down for Doctor Strange, Inhumans, and Black Panther, but not Shazam! never Shazam!

  • Romsy

Really disappointing that they’re changing his father. J’son is an awesome character. A war mongering tyrant that has a really cool dynamic with Starlord. After really enjoying the first film, not happy at all they’re making such a huge change.

    • Kyle Chandler

It sounds like they might have a plan in place, so I’m interested to see how it deviates.

Drax was the best fucking part of the damn movie. they need to make a drax movie, just him fucking slaying dudes the entire time like Dredd. then do a fucking Drax v Dredd movie.

    • MIXTER

This comment redeemed your last comment!

  • Alboone

I bet Quills father is Thanos. That would literally be an insane story development that would just kick everything up a notch. His mom could be the emblem of death that Thanos wants to please all leading up to the infinity gauntlet.

    • MIXTER

Hmm, kinda good, but its a bit Luke/Vader all over again. Though GOTG was very Star Warsy at times, that might go too far.

      • Colonel_Neville_Wraithchild

my thoughts exactly, but hey, it could turn into a gag given quill’s penchant for pop culture references… “thanos is my dad? so i’m luke? man, i wanted to be Han”

      • milo

Plus it would make Gamora his sister which would be weird.

      • milo

Although they did interrupt the two just before they kissed, but that could just be to tease a romantic angle then subvert it. Doesn’t seem like the sort of movie that would bother with romance either way.

    • bidi

after reading Gunn’s comments my first thought was also “oh god are they making Thanos his dad?”

    • Colonel_Neville_Wraithchild

that would be like ripping off star wars

    • idchoppers

This is what I believed was going to happen as soon as it was revealed in the movie that he wasn’t fully human.

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Thanos ends up being his father.

    • Viteh

That would explain why he resisted the power of…well, you know.

But yeah, that would be approaching Planet Ripoffia.

    • Nick

That would mean yandu was hired by thanos to retrieve Peter and yandu disobeyed and kept him. No chance… It’s a silly thought, I mean EXTREMELY silly. His mothers description doesn’t fit at all. Him looking 100% human doesn’t factor in at all?

    • Bob

U really think Quills mom let Thanos tear her up lol???? Hahaha. Sorry, the mental picture in my mind is horrifying and hilarious at the same time.

  • Nick

Changing the father is probably a great idea to drive the plot towards thanos. Thanos is NOT the father tho. Kind of a stupid idea IMO. Yondu was supposed to deliver peter to his father and yondu never did. Would yondu be walking around for 20 some years if he betrayed thanos? Also gunn just said nebula is the sweetest of his children so they’re clearly all worse than her so not quill. Adam Warlock seems to be the best bet. I don’t care what they do, I’m back to trusting these guys like I did after the Avengers. Wish iron man 2,3 and Thor 2 weren’t crap. I’m almost over those characters. Also I don’t really need them to meet up any time soon . It’s so awesome having this massive universe that they all live in and letting the villains all intertwine rather than the heroes.

    • bidi

i’m kind of with you on this one. what was so nice about Guardians was that there was only a periphery connection to all the other MCU movies. just keep making the movies set out in space and other parts of the galaxy and only go back to Earth for Avengers. so far, Cap 2 was the only sequel to one of the main character movies that was actually better than the first

  • the king of comedy

Guardians of The Galaxy was an amazing movie, one of the best Marvel movies to date, next to Avengers and the first Iron Man

  • milo

Since Disney now owns both Marvel and Star Wars, his father is obviously going to be Darth Vader.

  • jack

Avengers 3 is going to be 3 hours + if it involves both GOTG and Avengers. There would be so many characters involved (unless some of them die).

  • appolox

I’m glad their not fully sticking to the source material. This gives them the chance to do new and exciting things that could never be accomplished in the comics.

  • Guest

I’m not familiar with the Inhumans but since there has just been some news about it, is it possible that a character out of that could be Quill’s father? (Thus GotG 2 leading somewhat into the Inhumans)

    • Nick

It’s a good thought but this was just announced and fiege and gunn have had the father arc mapped out before they wrote guardians to completion

  • Christopher Clemens

Seriously no one has mentioned Starfox? (Thanos’s brother Eros). If anyone angelic would be likely to knock up an Terran and leave it would be that guy. Also neat tie between Thanos and Star Lord.

My bet is it won’t be until Guardians 3 that the two teams meet up to fight Thanos, or maybe even after that in a Guardians + Avengers movie (some diff. title obviously) when they fight Thanos together. Would be a lot of fun to see the two teams interact with each other, seeing as both had a hard time getting along with each other I could see various members of each group teaming up (Hulk + Drax, Gamora + Black Widow, Peter Quill + Tony Stark). Anyways I’m looking forward to Guardians 2.

Here we go rewrting the history fuck I hate when Hollywood does this !! More so since Marvel/Disney is doing it why fuck with the characters origin !! What do they get out of ruining it for the fans !!

  • Strong Enough

i bet its the same dude who made rocket. that way in the sequel both peter and rocket stories can tie together. you have tension between them that creates drama and eventually a closer relationship at the end

I have this theory that The Avengers, The Guardians, and possibly The Inhumans will all meet up to face the galaxy level threat of Thanos assembling the Infinity Stones. BUT, this will not be 1 movie. It will be 2 parts, possibly even 3; but I’m leaning toward 2. Like Part 1 and Part 2. I really think that is what it’s gonna be. And I cannot wait for it.
