Don’t expect the trailers and TV spots for Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 to give away major plot points—at least, as long as writer/director James Gunn gets his way. Indeed, in a recent interview discussing the just-released trailer for the thriller The Belko Experiment—which Gunn wrote—the director discussed the difference between crafting a trailer for a film like Belko, where you don’t have to worry about spoiling major plot or character developments, and putting together a trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2. Speaking with THR, Gunn said he’s keenly aware that as soon as a new Guardians 2 trailer is released, the internet is going to pick it apart for hints and clues:

"With Guardians, people really go through every single little shot and try to figure out what the movie's about. And there's a lot of mysteries in Guardians 2."

Indeed, the filmmaker said he and Marvel Studios are in the process of deciding how much to reveal in the trailers for Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2:

"We were talking about how much to give away — and we're not going to give away very much… With Guardians, it's such an emotional and physical journey, going to all these different places. It's like, 'God, do I really want to show this planet we go to in the middle of the movie? … Those are always hard choices to make."

Gunn went on to reveal that the now-iconic first teaser trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy, which featured “Hooked on a Feeling”, almost didn’t get released. It “tested not very well” and the marketing department had created an alternate, misleading, cheesy trailer that teased a different kind of movie, but Marvel went ahead and released the “Hooked on a Feeling” trailer anyway and, well, the rest is history.

But Marvel and Disney’s marketing game plan thus far has consisted of revealing an onslaught of trailers, clips, and TV spots in the month before the new movie is released, giving fans copious amounts of new footage to thumb through. So I’ll be interested to see the direction Marvel and Disney take on Guardians 2, especially if Gunn is able to convince them to keep the film's biggest surprises under wraps.

We’ll get our first taste soon enough with the full teaser trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 expected “soon.” The film itself opens in theaters on May 5, 2017.
