After countless shortlist stories and rumors concerning who would play Star-Lord in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, the search for the lead role is finally over, and fittingly the actor is someone who never appeared on any of the aforementioned lists.  Deadline reports that Chris Pratt has been tapped to play Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, a character who was born of a human mother and alien father, and is a master strategist and combat expert who wears an ability-enhancing suit and pilots a psychically-linked ship.  As Guardians features a cast of strange and cosmic characters, Quill was an important role to fill because he will likely act as the audience’s introduction to the vast, unfamiliar Guardians world.  Hit the jump for more.

chris-pratt-guardians-of-the-galaxyThere were plenty of actors rumored for the role that made a lot of sense (John Krasinski, Zachary Levi, etc.), and Deadline notes that Marvel made test deals with Joel Edgerton, Jack Huston, Lee Pace, and Eddie Redmayne, but Chris Pratt actually seems like a perfect fit.  His comic timing is excellent as evidenced by his work on NBC’s Parks and Recreation, and he’s shown his talent on the dramatic side with Moneyball and 2012’s Zero Dark Thirty, for which he also proved that he can beef up for a role if need-be.

Looking back on the previous shortlists and taking Pratt into consideration, it’s clear that writer/director James Gunn is planning on injecting a good amount of humor into Guardians of the Galaxy.  A rumor surfaced recently that Marvel was looking at possibly tapping Jim Carrey or Adam Sandler to do voice work in the film (one of the guardians is a talking raccoon), so I’m interested to see the tone that Gunn settles on for the finished film.

With the role of Star-Lord secure, Gunn and Marvel now look to filling out the rest of the cast, which includes the powerful Drax the Destroyer, a giant tree named Groot, the aforementioned Rocket Raccoon, and the female lead Gamora.  The story is also rumored to involve the villain Thanos.  Expect to hear more soon as production gears up to begin later this year.  Guardians of the Galaxy will be released in 3D on August 1, 2014.

He better get back in shape.

    • wes

I’m sure he will since this will be his biggest role yet and IMO this is the most important film since Avengers to see if the general audience can grasp a cosmic comic book movie.

    • Strong Enough

back? he never was in shape

    • Nerdgasm

Don’t listen to Strong. He’s a bonafide idiot and will slam anything Marvel.

  • Strong Enough

Bert Macklin F.B.I has been promoted to Bert Macklin…Space Cop!

Knowing Marvel. They prob got poor Pratt in the cheap. Everyone else is more expensive and the reasonable choice is an unknown to save costs.

  • Dominik Klein

lol they are not even trying to getting any big names. cheap marvel is cheap

russo brothers, emily vancamp, chris pratt lmao

they might as well hire ME!

    • SP1234

Well, the nice thing about Marvel is that they have a good reputation of casting unknowns in major roles and because they shine in the part, they do become big stars afterwards (Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and Chris Hemsworth as Thor come to mind), so it would be safe to say that small-known actors like Pratt and VanCamp will have a bright future ahead.

      • Bill Graham

SP, Jackman is a bad example since that was Fox’s decision, not Marvel. I also wouldn’t consider Hemsworth a star just yet. His stock is definitely on the rise, though. But the underlying point you make is valid. They can turn relative unknowns into nearly household names or even revive a career (cough* DOWNEY *COUGH).

Seriously, though. These people have to start from somewhere, and Pratt has done enough time to land a big role by now.

Having “big names” doesn’t make a movie good. Valentines Day and Movie 43 come to mind.

If you have to ask who, you haven’t watched Parks and Rec. If you haven’t watched Parks and Rec by now, you should never fucking talk ever.

I was worried about this movie. Then they cast Pratt. Now I am nothing but excited. Best casting choice ever.

  • Nomis1700

MMMM!!! He was so hot in Moneyball!!! Great that he lands such a role!

  • 198d

I am a big fan of his. I really enjoy his performance on Parks and Rec. I’ve seen him in interviews, and he seems like a stand up guy. Good for him.

great news he’s hilarious in parks and rec about time he hit the big time cool choice marvel

    This. Is. Awesome.

C’mon he looks like a clone of Edgerton !

    • Josh Kaye

I did notice this when seeing them on screen together in Zero Dark Thirty. Either way, they’re both great actors and both would have been a fine choice as Star-Lord.

This dude is not bad actor. didn’t expect the other actors on that list to really make the final cut. This movie will make or break Marvel Studios they made choice that could get people talking and it worked!

    • cynic

This movie is not going to make or break Marvel. The studio is far past the point where the fate of a single film can affect its future.

Don’t really know who this guy is, but this is the studio that made some crazy casting decisions at the time that turned out to be pitch perfect and make the actor’s career: for example Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, Chris Hemsworth as Thor etc.
