Dave Bautista to Star as Drax the Destroyer in Marvel’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

     March 14, 2013

Reports now have Dave Bautista (The Man with the Iron Fists) signed on to play Drax the Destroyer in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.  Bautista was in the mix for the role with Isaiah Mustafa and Patrick Wade, as well as Jason Momoa, who many considered the frontrunner.  Bautista will now become the second team member to join Marvel’s Guardians after Chris Pratt (Zero Dark Thirty) signed on as Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord earlier this year.  While Quill is a human-alien hybrid, Drax began life as a human but was reborn in a powerful new body which granted him extreme strength, flight, and energy blasts.  Hit the jump for more.

Heat Vision repodave-bautista-guardians-of-the-galaxyrts that Bautista has joined Guardians of the Galaxy as Drax the Destroyer.  The James Gunn-directed picture features Marvel’s lesser-known team of superheroes which also includes Rocket Raccoon, Groot and Gamora.  The plot centers on Quill, “a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone want.”  For an in-depth look at the characters from Guardians of the Galaxy, check out our handy-dandy guide here.

Bautista was recently seen as the all-metal Brass Body in RZA’s The Man with the Iron Fists, but was also featured in a recent image from David Twohy’s upcoming film, Riddick.  Bautista stars opposite Vin Diesel in that film, which will be released on September 6th.

Great reporting guys… Drax doesn’t fly and he doesn’t use energy blasts…

    • Dave Trumbore

He did up until 2004. We’ll call this a draw.

    • The Destroyer

He originally did have the power of flight and energy blasts, but at some point he was killed and resurrected and lost most of his powers. That was when he began using the knives.

      • Nebula

Not familiar with GotG but in the comics does Drax also have the face of an inbred pittbull? Because…JASON MOMOA IS SO PRETTY I wanted him in this movie! Now I’ll have to spend two hours looking at Roidy McMongoolface.

What’s next, Chyna as Gamora?! Ugh Marvel Studios, I know you’re penny pinchers when it comes to these things but please try to keep a certain standard when it comes to your movies. I mean FFS Robert Downey Jr. will have to interact with this trailer trash icon at some point and frankly the idea of that sickens me.

      • Um, Sure

Since I’m pretty sure that Robert Downey Jr. isn’t going to be required to kiss him, “pretty” probably isn’t a requirement.

Troll fail lmao and by Dave

    • You are very confident for being very wrong.

Ehh, we will see. I don’t know much about him, so I don’t know if he can act. I am intrigued by this movie not knowing anything about the comics, but at the time of the first Iron Man, I never knew much about him either. I was much more of a Spider-man and Silver Surfer fan. Speaking of which, when can we get a movie that does Silver Surfer and Galactus justice? I know Fox owns the rights, but it sounds like where Marvel is going right now, Silver Surfer would be a great way to expand the universe and explore the Cosmic Forces of the Marvel Universe.

Marvel tried to negotiate with Fox for the right to use Glactus and the Surfer in its films, but the offer was rejected. They were willing to allow Fox to retain the rights to Daredevil for a longer period of time in return for the right to use the world devourer and his herald, as Fox’s rights were set to expire last September. Fox was willing to lose DD and retain all control over its other licensed characters. It’s too damn bad because Marvel would have done right by its cosmic heavy-hitters.

    I knew it!!

    Totally called it.

Awesome! I was actually talking to Bautista at my gym about 2 months ago cause about his MMA school he was opening. He mentioned that if everything went right he would be extremely busy in the upcoming months because of a “huge movie role” he was taking. Had no idea it was this huge though!

    Great Casting

the guy already looks like a superhero

  • angfan

Bautista has a great look for this role, but so does Momoa and Momoa happens to have a helluva lot more screen charisma and acting chops. No offense to Bautista (he seems like a genuinely cool dude in interviews) but the wooden way he delivers lines makes me think the filmmakers aren’t going to give a lot of speaking lines to the character.

  • Jack

    Momoa..charisma..did you see Conan?

  • dogg

As long as the talking raccoon is on board, I’m…out. Yep, they’ve pinpointed the exact breaking point for my suspension of disbelief.

    • Bob

The raccoon is the best part……he’s a boss….so believing theres Ice Giants is so much easier than a talking raccoon?

      • Um, Sure

        Yes. Infinitely moreso.

    • Bob

Really….a Raccoon, which already exist in our world, all it does extra is talk and is smart. Or Ice Giants, that do not exist at all and have powers to make their bodies into weapons, and when they touch you their so cold you burn. That’s easier to believe….yea sure. Movies like Narnia, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes show people can accept smart, badass animals if done right.

      • Um, sure

Keep trying to defend the plausibility of a badass talking raccoon. It’s working so well for you.

Is it just me, or does he kinda look like Channing Tatum on steroids?

  • FoonZeeS

    I like this casting.

Sure he’s not the best actor in the world, but he has had years of talking in front of thousands of people while he was a pro wrassler so I’m not too worried. And he’s got the look to be a believable bad ass.

  • Doug

I am assuming that Drax is more of a silent brawn type, meaning that whoever they cast just has to have large muscles and be able to punch shit, no real acting talent/charisma required

  • ED

So he’ll be in Avengers 2 as well. I hope he’s a way better actor on screen than he is in front of thousands of wrestling fans.
