Yesterday, Disney debut a pretty fantastic new trailer for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.  It again conveyed the offbeat tone with which writer/director James Gunn has tackled this comics adaptation, and it also offered a closer look at what to expect from the space-set adventure.  Since there was quite a bit of new footage in the trailer, we’ve rounded up a batch of screenshots from the most interesting bits that were gleaned.  They include better looks at Rocket the Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper) and Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel), as well as Lee Pace’s intimidating, villainous Ronan the Accuser and a number of other characters and environments.

Hit the jump to check out a large gallery of Guardians of the Galaxy images.  The film also stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Benicio Del Toro, Glenn Close, Karen Gillan, Michael Rooker, and John C. ReillyGuardians of the Galaxy opens in theaters on August 1st.

Here’s the official synopsis for Guardians of the Galaxy:

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team – the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits – Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand – with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” is presented by Marvel Studios. The film releases August 1, 2014, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

Has anyone photoshopped dicks into Benicio’s hands yet?

  • James

Glad they are putting Knowhere in the film. I wonder if they will refer to it as the head of a Celestial.

    • Grayden

I was gonna say. I didn’t catch it in the trailer, but seeing the still made me think that planetoid looks an awful lot like a head.

    • Nathan

I thought it was Ego when I first saw it.

    • ʝoe ßloggs

Makes sense since it’ll likely serve as the Guardians’ base of operations.

  • the king of comedy

I love the cast for this movie, this might be the biggest cast in a marvel movie since the avengers.

The image of The Collector is amazing! I’m so excited for this world!

  • TwilightNewsSite

Great images. FWIW, generally want to up the contrast and brightness when converting from video to stills.

  • Jamesy

The photo of The Collector reminds me of a cheesy 80′s music video “Ohh baby just hold me”

    • ʝoe ßloggs

I think the tone was set in Thor:TDW. Benicio is playing the role with quite the OTT theatricality – yet masking a hidden agenda. I’m intrigued by this devious ‘Joker-like’ portrayal.

outside of the internet are people really excited about this? a talking tree…..looks like garbage

    • ʝoe ßloggs

      Your comment is garbage.

      • DEADP00L

        It begins….

      • ʝoe ßloggs

To be fair, he/she was baiting such a response. Not that I’m deliberatly counter-trolling.

    • DEADP00L

Aside form the internet….you mean where billions roam?

      • hawkes

To be fair if you were take internet hype and turn it into box office dollars it wouldn’t be a whole hell of a lot. Everyone on the internet was hyping up Scott Pilgrim, and when it came out it failed. The movie blog-o-sphere is still a small fraction of the movie going public.

      • Nathan

It floppped at the Box office, but still made double it’s budget on DVD sales, where the money truly is.
And then there of course is Thor, a movie that was only truly hyped on the web and then made millions

      “a talking tree…..looks like garbage”

Yea, I remember how the LOTR first movie (FOTR) did so well, but then when they introduced those talking trees in the second movie (The Two Towers), the LOTR series tanked and lost money. If they had just taken out those dumb talking trees, then I think the series would have been successful, and perhaps even been considered for some academy awards by the time the the third film (ROTK) came out.

Those dumb-ass talking trees always ruin things. Garbage!

      • The Flobbit

I sincerely. sincerely HOPE you are being sarcastic.

      • MJ

        YES, OF COURSE

        :-)

      • pro346

If talking trees were the main stars along with a cgi racoon it would be laughed at and made less than the first one….gotg isn’t lord of the rings and it will never have the same amount of impact! maybe among movie blog fanboys it might….

      • Werefon

Congratulations, put a cock in your mouth) trolollolllloll

      • MJ

        Loser

      • Werefon

        Yeah, you!

  • MJ

Love the trailer, but the CGI and dubbed voice on Rocket Racoon doesn’t come across as very convincing…looks fake with bad lip syncing.

They should have brought in WETA to do Rocket. I am not impressed with how he looks and sounds from the Marvel in-house special effects team here..

    • The Flobbit

It’s funny because the other CGI looks great. But Rocket Racoon just looks fake.

      • MJ

Maybe its the fur — potentially difficult to render convincingly in CGI; plus there seems to be a slight blurry quality to him?

      • The Flobbit

Blurry, and a cartoony build. Shoulders too narrow, his guns too big.

    • Ramone

Yes, because the other talking raccoons we’ve seen have so much more convincing mouth movements…

      • MJ

That’s a piss-poor excuse, dude. As much as I absolutely hate Jar Jar Binks, he looked and talked like a real being, and that was late 90′s technology. And WETA did talking trees 15 years ago that looked more real than this racoon.

      • Werefon

No they didn’t. Avatars and shrimps look more believable than Yrees in LOTR.

      • MJ

Sorry, but that is just plain bullcrap.

      • Werefon

        Nope it is a fact!

      • MJ

        No, it’s not.

      • Werefon

Yeah, it is. Go ask people who made it – WETA, as I did.

Until then, shut your mouth, put a tampon in your asshole and enjoy some ice cream.

  • Colin Christian

Every frame looks amazing. The design team and Gunn have done a really great job,I read the books,ok enough, but this takes it up to ‘Heavy Metal’ level, has a Euro feel to it,which is a great thing,a little more decorative, textured, layered,I’m very impressed.Love that back shot of Drax with all the ships…but what I really need is endless shots of Nebula……………

    take my money!

    • The Flobbit

      I accept donations.

  • Werefon

BTW, Where can I find HD version of the second trailer???

Because my screencaps are not matching quality with this ones.
