Director James Gunn Talks GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, Infinity Gems, Adam Warlock, When We’ll Hear Rocket Raccoon Speak, and the Second Trailer

     February 20, 2014

If you just can’t get enough of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy than this week should be putting a big smile on your face.  In addition to the film’s first trailer and a bunch of images, director James Gunn recently commented on some aspects of the film that will likely please (and tease) fans, while probably confusing the uninitiated.  Do you want to know if an Infinity Gem will appear in the film, and which one it might be?  Care to find out if Adam Warlock or the Black Novas will show up?  Perhaps you’d like to know when we’ll hear Rocket Raccoon actually speak, or when Michael Rooker, Lee Pace and Glenn Close’s characters will get some exposure.  And just who was that guy holding up Drax the Destroyer in the trailer anyway?  Hit the jump for answers on all of that and more!

In an interview with Kevin Pereira over at, Gunn fielded a rapid-fire list of questions aimed at ferreting out the secrets of his Guardians of the Galaxy adaptation.  The full interview will appear at the above-mentioned site on Monday, February 24th, but a rather substantial teaser has already been released.  Listen to the interview here, or check below to read the Q&A:

james-gunn-guardians-of-the-galaxyHere are a few quotes from the interview if it went a little too fast for you to catch:

Is there an Infinity Gem in Guardians?

James Gunn:  Hmmm, you have to wait and see.

Do we see Gamora naked?

Gunn: Sort of.

Nova Corps – Where are they in all this mayhem?

Gunn: Nova Corps is sort of a galactic police force that exists in outer space. They’re based out of Xandar.

Are we going to see any Black Novas in this?

Gunn: No Black Novas.

Any Skrulls?

Gunn: Marvel only partially owns the Skrulls. And also, for the record, we don’t own the Badoon either. So people are asking why we have a Sakaaran in the film and we don’t own the Badoon.

Captain Marvel or Adam Warlock?

Gunn: Some of these things you gotta wait and see!

Okay, what about Glenn Close? She’s in there, right? Where was she in the trailer?

Gunn: Glenn Close is in the movie. I’m saving some people for the second trailer, which I like better than the first trailer, frankly. The main people, I think, we’re saving are Ronan, played by Lee Pace; Yondu…

guardians-of-the-galaxySo that wasn’t Ronan holding Drax?

Gunn: Well, you see him there, but barely.

So that is Ronan holding Drax?

Gunn: That is Ronan holding Drax. Yondu played by Rooker, and Nova Prime played by Glenn Close.

Why raccoons?

Gunn: You didn’t even ask me why Rocket didn’t speak. That’s the big thing people want, Rocket to speak in the trailer. I will drop a nugget that they will be hearing Rocket speak in something very, very soon.

Like an Instagram video?

Gunn: It’s gonna be something. Follow me on Instagram and find out.

Was that a conscious decision to hold off, or was it just not ready, having Rocket speak?

Gunn: Well, the design of the trailer is that it’s about Peter Quill, basically. And then we kinda get snippets of the other characters. There’s nobody talking except for Peter Quill and whoever his adversary is, Korath, who’s Djimon Hounsou at the beginning of the movie.

Will an Avenger be in the ranks of the Guardians?

Gunn: No. Not right now.

guardians-of-the-galaxyHow’d you get the actors to believe they were with a talking raccoon? You said your brother was there on set playing the lines.

Gunn: My brother, Sean Gunn, wore a little green suit, and he waddled around and he acted out Rocket. I think all of the guys will attest to the fact, and they have in all of their interviews, that he was a great part of the team, and it really was Zoe, Dave, Chris and Sean who created the energy that people will see in the movie between these four characters, who are usually at odds and then sometimes find common ground. Sean was a big part of that energy and creating that. Not only was he doing a great job of performing himself, but he also gave the other actors something to work off of so that they’re not just yelling at a tennis ball.

Here’s the official synopsis for Guardians of the Galaxy:

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team – the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits – Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand – with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” is presented by Marvel Studios. The film releases August 1, 2014, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

there really should just be a gag order before movies like this are released. this is slightly stupid and a bit masturbatory. just wait, my goodness.

    • Faptain America

There’s a gag order every time I masturbate, andi.

    • Neo Racer

Its only allllllllllllllllll the way till August to get sick of it

  • Faptain America

Thanks James Gunn for admitting what everyone is already thinking: the first trailer sucked, and you need a better second trailer.

    • Arthur Dent

Pfft, whatever. He didn’t say it sucked. First trailer kicked ass. Waiting to see more.

An uncanny ability to read in-between lines and arrive at the wrong conclusion.
      Well done!

      • Faptain America

Clearly if the first trailer was so good he wouldn’t ALREADY be talking about a second trailer. That’s admission enough for me.

“Will an Avenger be in the ranks of the Guardians?
    Gunn: No. Not right now.”
I’m calling it now, Iron Man is going to join the guardians in the sequel.

    • bidi

granted i have zero knowledge of the comics history, but wouldn’t Thor make more sense?

      • Mezmero

Drax lands in Asgard thru a worm hole so no Thor. Iron Man has a suit that goes in to space, but that’s not a reason to add him yet. The Guardians are on a higher level than the Avengers and NOVA Is on a higher level than SHIELD. Didn’t you see them in the cartoon? We have long time before we see them team up.

      • NICK НΛRT

iron man is part of gotg in the comics now.. so is venom actually

      • Mezmero

I know he is now but this how they became a team. I’m sure when Thanos collects all of the gems they team up but we won’t know till Phase 3.

      • David

Venom isn’t in the group yet, but they have shown him on a future cover. Iron Man was around for a cup of tea and then he disappeared (don’t quite get that one). Maybe they add Shield or Carol Danvers. RDJ only has a contract to be in 2 more Marvel films till he hangs it up. “Getting to old”

I can’t wait to see Ronan in the second trailer – hope he talks in it too. It’ll be fascinating to see how they portray him.

What’s funny to me is that, before I ever saw the trailer, I’ve never read Guardians of the Galaxy , and was mildly interested in the movie (only because it’s a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe). But now, it’s become a must see for me. Go Marvel team.

I thought he was suggesting “maybe” :)

  • eshsrh

oh man… how could you not ask him about Thanos?

  • ugh

The interviewer is a FUCKING TOOL

  • BulletClub

The Badoon appeared in the prelude comic to The Dark World. Is that a different entity to the movie-verse?
