While rumors continue to swirl around Disney’s Star Wars, Marvel is busy looking for their Star-Lord. A shortlist of actors is reportedly being tested for the lead role in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, directed by James Gunn (Super). Included on that list are Joel Edgerton (Warrior), Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire), Jim Sturgess (Cloud Atlas), Lee Pace (Lincoln) and Eddie Redmayne (My Week with Marilyn). The leader of the Guardians, Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, was born of a human mother and alien father. He’s a master strategist and combat expert who wears an ability-enhancing suit and pilots a psychically-linked ship. Sounds like a fun role for any one of these guys to make their own, but there have been even more names thrown into the competition. Hit the jump to check them out.

guardians-of-the-galaxy-rocket-raccoonDeadline reported on Marvel’s shortlist of actors to take on the mantle of Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy, but the list is not exhaustive. Other names of interest include Garrett Hedlund (TRON: Legacy), James Marsden (X-Men) and Sullivan Stapleton (Animal Kingdom). Being familiar with most of these names, my money goes to Edgerton being the favorite. Hedlund and Marsden had their chance to be leaders in big franchises and I never quite bought into it. Pace is a fantastic actor, but I just can’t picture him as a grizzled and disgruntled leader of an alien space force. I’m not too up to date on performances from Huston, Redmayne or Stapleton, but I have to say that the latter has the look and size to be a believable Star-Lord. Whether I’m right or wrong in my assumptions, be sure to let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Look for Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1st, 2014.

  1. If they don’t put Yee Ole’ Racoon in this flick…I’ma B one pisst off GOTG fan.

Please let it be Edgerton. He’s the poop.

  2. Come on Joel Edgerton! That would be such a great choice!! Guy has the pysical and acting capabilities for this part as he proved in Warrior. He would be great as Star-Lord. Now Vin Diesel as Drax the Destroyer. Just Picture Riddick as Drax….it’s perfect. And just think about this….Seth McFarlane as Rocket Racoon. It won’t happen but it would be so hillarious. I feel he has the perfect funny/dick voice to be Rocket….if u have seen Ted you probaly know what I mean. Not sure for Gamora or Groot though. Only random name I can think of for Gamora is Zoe Saldana….that wouldn’t be to bad actually. I can picture it would be like her Avatar/Star Trek roles.

    • I love Lee Pace but I was hoping for him as Ant Man instead but I would settle for this if it gets him in the Marvel Universe

  4. Joel Edgerton would be incredible. Watch him in Warrior. Fantastic. He would be a fantastic addition to Marvel’s universe :)

  5. As I was watching Jim Sturgess as Hae-Joo Chang in Cloud Atlas, I was thinking how he could potentially play a Han Solo-esque role in the future. Star-Lord could be that role. My vote is for Sturgess

    • I agree and not only that, but, although there was controversy about the Asian thing, Sturgess absolutely transformed into Hae-Joo and that type of transformation could come in handy for Star-Lord.

  6. You never bought Marsden as a leader just because he was never given a chance to be it: the X-MEN movies were all about Wolverine, remember.
I think it’s time to give him a real chance to be a leader superhero!
