Many geeks like Nathan Fillion, and they’d probably like to see him play a geekier part than his role on the Castle.  However, they’ll have to shrug and accept the fact that he’ll probably never fill their fan-casting for Nathan Drake or Hal Jordan.  However, he will sneak into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Guardians of the Galaxy.  Initial rumors wanted to give him as huge a role as possible, and he was soon being connected with Nova Prime a.k.a Richard Rider.

However, director James Gunn, who worked with Fillion on Slither, Super, and PG-Porn, went to Twitter to quiet down the rumors.  Hit the jump for more, and to see Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Empire Magazine covers.  The film opens in 3D on August 1st.

First, Gunn debunked the Nova rumor:

Then, he confirmed that Fillion will appear in “a very small fun cameo”:

Finally, if you think Gunn is trying to cover anything up, he responds:

Here are the Empire covers:

Here’s the official synopsis for Guardians of the Galaxy:

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits–Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand – with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is presented by Marvel Studios and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gilian, Djimon Hounsou with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Commander Rael and Benicio del Toro as The Collector. Distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, the film opens August 1, 2014.

That’s cool, but I’d MUCH rather it be Guardians of the Galaxy have a fun cameo in Firefly! ;-)

I can imagine it being like Arnold’s cameo in Welcome to the Jungle/The Rundown.

Don’t tell anyone but he will be voicing Cosmo the dog.

Wheny will the finally *really* add him to the MCU. Dr. Strange or whatever – I don’t care. But he belongs there.

Mal is probably locked up in that prison.

I still love the “You’re Welcome” on the poster.

As mind-blowingly, universe-stoppingly awesome as this news is, this is a surprise that really should have been saved for the cinema.

It would have been such a cool reveal but these stupid studios give away everything.

i know… the movies just like a month away.

It’s not really the studio’s fault. There were rumors that Fillion had a fairly big or significant part. This announcement only happened because they felt like if they didn’t make a correction there would be people disappointed and complaining about it.

Blame the people who leak rumors, not the studio on this one.

Or in this case, I believe it was Fillion himself who first let slip that he would appear in the movie. And of course, given the nature of the internet, it traveled like wildfire and there was no use denying

Nathan should play in star wars

  • jteeter

Could we be seeing a brief Captain Mal Reynolds appearance from him? That would be so insanely awesome…and it’s not a far fetched idea either.

    • Chris

But how would that be possible? Logistically, I mean. GotG would have to take place a few hundred years from now. That would mean it isn’t happening in tandem with the rest of the MCU.
