Marvel has released a new poster for James Gunn‘s Guardians of the Galaxy.  The story follows five intergalactic misfits—Peter Quill aka Starlord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel), and Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper)—as they set out to recapture a powerful and mysterious orb from the villainous Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace).  I really like this poster.  With a little artistic tweaking, it would be right at home on the cover of a pulpy sci-fi paperback.

Hit the jump to check out the Guardians of the Galaxy poster, and come back Monday at 10:00am PST to watch the new trailer.  You can also click on the respective links for official character descriptions, Pratt’s interview with Steve, and new behind-the-scenes images.  The film opens in 3D on August 1st, and also stars Benicio Del Toro, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, John C. ReillyPeter Serafinowicz, Michael Rooker, and Glenn Close.

Here’s the official synopsis for Guardians of the Galaxy:

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team – the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits – Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand – with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” is presented by Marvel Studios. The film releases August 1, 2014, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

It will hardly be a fail, unless the film turns out to be crap. Keep in mind Disney/Marvel is aware this will not do Avengers or even Thor levels.

You realize we haven’t even entered the super promo blitz period yet, right? In two months the majority of the TV-watching populace in this country will have watched (or fast forwarded) through a dozen Guardians of the Galaxy trailers.

They will probably make more money from people who googled ‘Hooked on a feelin’ from the trailer lol

not everything has to make a billion dollars to be a success. marvel isn’t stupid – they aren’t expecting this to put up iron man numbers. either way, name a marvel film in the past 5 years that hasn’t been a hit. no reason to think otherwise for this

I read somewhere it had to clear $400 million total. That’s not much for a Marvel film released in the height of summer.

Even if it doesn’t, as long as the movie is even somewhat well-received, it will sell a bunch of merchandise, which is where the real money is made.

I would assume Marvel’s expectations are in line with the first Thor and Cap movies, around 175 domestic and 400M worldwide. They should be fine unless they let the budget get way out of control. Which they probably won’t.
