First Poster for Marvel’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Displays Excellent Tagline

     February 20, 2014

Have you had enough of Guardians of the Galaxy yet?  Of course you haven’t, which means you’ll be happy to check out the debut poster for Marvel’s upcoming sci-fi adventure.  Fresh on the heels of the trailer drop and today’s multitude of short featurettes, the studio has unveiled the first poster for writer/director James Gunn’s (Super) comic book adaptation, and it’s pretty perfect.  In keeping with the off-beat tone of the trailer, the tagline for this poster is, fittingly, “You’re Welcome.”  Marvel is taking a big gamble on a largely unknown property with Gunn’s film, but everything we’ve seen thus far tells us that the studio is going all-in with Guardians’ inherent weirdness.  I’m certainly not complaining.

Hit the jump to take a look at the poster.  The film stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, David Bautista, Lee Pace, Karen Gillan, Benicio Del Toro, Djimon Hounsou, John C. Reilly, Michael Rooker, Peter Serafinowicz, Glenn Close, and the voices of Bradley Cooper and Vin DieselGuardians of the Galaxy opens in 3D on August 1st.

Here’s the official synopsis for Guardians of the Galaxy:

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team – the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits – Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand – with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” is presented by Marvel Studios. The film releases August 1, 2014, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

“You’re Welcome” – Now, THAT’S funny! Still have to watch the featurettes, but was able to see the Rocket one. He sounds pretty much like I expected him to.

      • Arthur Dent

        She makes $69/hour because she’s a whore.

    • I can’t fight this feeling.

Are you all seriously buying this? This shit is waaay, way too forced. Do you hear that? That’s the sound of the general public hopping ship leaving all the nerds aboard the Marvel ship barreling headfirst into an iceberg. Shit is going ot be a disaster.

      • Arthur Dent

        Haha, you fail.

How are the benefits at DC/WB? Do they have a good 401k?

      • Doug_101

I posted about the trailer that the humor there fell flat for me for the most part, which is why my emphasis is on “That’s” in my post above. I don’t think the film will be a disaster, but I’m hoping the teaser is not the best they’ve got. The environments and action look great so far and the poster really is funny, though.

From the studio that ignores The IncredIble Hulk haha

    • The Flobbit

That was one giant crapfest. I don’t even know how it went wrong. No wait, I do…

    • Matt

Probably because Universal still has distribution rights on The Incredible Hulk. Marvel was able to get the distribution rights for Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America back from Paramount so that is why they are listed and The Incredible Hulk is not.

  • Ruprect

The more I see, the more I am stoked about this film.

The poster, as good as it is, is the weakest part of the reveal so far…and that’s saying something. :)

  • Btbcc12859

I like the metal font from the trailer

    • Christian

It’s like the font from the first Captain America trailer where sparks fly off of it.

So so looking forward to this, “You’re welcome” genius. Hope this hits, imo I was getting kinda sick of the superhero genre because they stick to a certain formula. But this looks so awesome.

sounds like something a hooker says before sex

that is easily one of the best taglines ive ever seen

  • The Flobbit

No, thank YOU, Marvel. Just when I thought you were losing your touch with lackluster sequels…you release this vibrant, perfectly cast Raiders/Star Wars of an adventure.

who else would you be thanking? the poster says “you’re welcome” which is the response to thank you

  • Zoidbert

A future variation poster will use “What a bunch of a-holes”.

  • Duder NME

Jimmy Fallon called. He wants his tagline, and career, back.

    Cool poster layout, though.
