Even though Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier haven’t come out yet, we can still look ahead to the penultimate Marvel Phase Two movie, Guardians of the Galaxy.  Yesterday, we reported on toys that would be in the toyline for the movie, and today we have a promo poster that was spotted in the wild (“wild” being a nicely furnished indoor area).  It doesn’t contain any images from the movie, but it does provide another nice shot of the main characters, and raises the question of what Star Lord (Chris Pratt) is holding.

Hit the jump to check out the image.  The film also stars Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Lee Pace, Karen Gillan, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close, Michael Rooker, Djimon HounsouPeter Serafinowicz, and Benicio Del ToroGuardians of the Galaxy opens August 1, 2014.

    That looks horribly fan made.

    • bilbo bagshot.

ya . i dont think its an official image. i hope not.

      • Farrell

It’s hard to believe Marvel/Disney would authorize such a shoddy looking poster.

      • The_Smirking_Revenge

Yeah, but look at the DVD cover for the Avengers… That’s pretty bad.
So it’s definitely not beyond the realm of possibility.

    • bilbo bagshot.

Star lord is looking pretty cool though.

    • Kota Lancaster

It reminds me of that Avenger’s promo poster from years ago where they’re all flying close together at something.

    • João Paulo

It’s official and from São Paulo, Brazil.

      • Farrell

Official from whom? Marvel or Sao Paulo? If it’s Marvel, I’m shocked…it looks horrible.

      • João Paulo

São Paulo is the place where this image come from, but James Gunn say on his facebook account, that image is a fan art and not a official one. Anyway is very strange that Marvel Brasil use this like official material, since is not.

    • MEY

I don’t like these characters. I think they look horrible. Aren’t they tale heroes for children? Are they really popular? (No intention to hurt anybody, just asking.)

      • The_Smirking_Revenge

Go pick up a few issues of Guardians, you won’t be disappointed…Unless you’re not into Sci-fi Comic book awesomeness.

They just started a new run recently and are only about 6/7 books in.

      • vpuik

And no, they have never been really popular. Marvel is really reaching out there for this movie, so we’ll see how it goes. Everything I’ve seen so far has been awesome! (except maybe this poster)

      • Nerdgasm

No. There are a lot of runs on these characters that I wouldn’t let someone under 13 read. The stories are also very complex in some parts and feature a widespread cast of characters so that being said it really is more of an adult series.

      • Becca

You mean this one has nudity and gore in it?

    • bombinUSA

fanart or not, this is better artwork than any of you nobodies can do.
show some bloody respect to the artist you untalented hacks.

  • bilbo bagshot

something is off about that poster. and whats up with Gamora? she looks wicked witch of the west.

  • James

No way is that official. Looks like crap.

  • Ryan Fink

Are we going to see tags at the end of the rest of the Phase II Marvel movies that point to GoG, the same way they used the Nick Fury tags to point toward Avengers? Would be cool to see John C. Reilly show up after the credits of Thor 2 and Cap 2.

    • Nerdgasm

Saw a screening of Thor there is a GotG scene at the end of Thor.. theres actually two scenes… but the GotG one doesnt feature John C Rielly but someone else.

  • Mixed Race rich kid NYC

You guys do know that Portuguese like their posters to be hand drawn ?

  • Cedhollywood

That poster “whispers” interstellar protectors of the galaxy instead of “yelling” it. But it’s the first of many so here’s hoping they get better.

  • melanarus

Wait a few weeks until more of these posters start popping up and you’ll see it’s official. This banner looks to be cropping out many elements of the entire posting oblong banner. I saw Avatar Banners in Asian theaters WEEKS before they were posted on Collider so this happens all the time.

BESIDES, do you really think Guardians of the Galaxy is going to look any better than the banner? Marvel thinks they can pull out another Avengers from this heaping pile of crap, it’s going to be be a flop. Avengers were the popular characters who EACH had their own films first and then teamed up. Guardians of the Galaxy is basically a crappy Saturday morning cartoon that gets canceled after 4 episodes.

    • WinterSoldier

have you read anything about guardians, have you?,you clearly dont know what you are talking about, the guardians have always been a team, never had an ongoing series, they are nothing like the avengers, they are abunch of misfits and rogues who team up due to various circumstances and then become a family, the tone of the film from what the director and marvel have said the movie is filled with comedy, drama and action and is a space adventure film which is the tone of the comics, besides do you have a time machine or can you predict the future, this movie may fail or it may succeed once the promotion starts and if they market it well, we dont know and you know what movie may have sounded like a crappy saturday morning cartoon,a wookie man,a green little puppet jedi master, yep ,you get my drift

      • Banon

To be fair, that was only true for the original team. The new roster is made up of a bunch of obscure, but separately established Marvel characters. Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Gamora and Drax all come from various places and comics going all the way back to the seventies.

  • XS

He is holding another device which will lay waste to yet another city, and that’s where the Marvel heroes come into rescue. 30 minutes of CGI and explosions and another film will be setup. End of the same ol’ story we have seen countless times before…

    • vpuik

Actually I heard Drax gets Gamorra pregnant, Groot is battling with drought caused by climate change, Rocket Raccoon is looking for the scientists who created him for some closure and Star Lord is hitting the bottle because his dad fired from the family business. One day they all walk into bar as strangers and talk for two hours before deciding to start a intergalactic superhero team and flying into space as closing credits roll.

  • Zenexo

    I am Groot

it’s definitely official, but remember this is PROMO art, made for a theatre in Brazil, no less. promo art for movies always looks dumb, even for the dark knight rises. it’s meant to sell the movie to little kids. as for the thing in star-lord’s hand, i’m assuming it’s the third ‘infinity stone’ of the marvel cinematic universe, and something the collector and/or thanos are trying to get a hold of

  • White Rose Brian

Whether or not this poster is official or not, however you think the poster looks, I’m still anticipating this one. Rocket Raccoon–I was introduced to him via Marvel Vs. Capcom 3–just might be worth the price of admission. Hopefully I’ll also get around to downloading the comics to my Kindle.

  • bombinUSA

You should guys do update to this news.

Director James Gunn has already written on his Twitter that this poster is just fanmade.
