One of the things I’ve liked about the Guardians of the Galaxy trailers is how they’ve used unconventional song choices to convey that this film has its own personality.  It turns out tunes such as Blue Swede‘s “Hooked on a Feeling”, Norman Greenbaum‘s “Spirit in the Sky”, and The Runaways‘ “Cherry Bomb” aren’t just in the trailers; they’ll also be on the film’s soundtrack.  There are also plenty of other exciting song selections such as David Bowie’s “Moonage Daydream”, The Jackson 5‘s “I Want You Back”, and Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell‘s “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”.  I can’t wait to hear how they’ll be used in the movie.

Hit the jump for the full tracklisting.  The film stars Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Lee Pace, Benicio Del ToroGlenn CloseKaren GillanMichael Rooker, Djimon Hounson, John C. Reilly, and the voices of Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel.  The Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack will be released on July 29th; click here to pre-order.  The film will be released in 3D on August 1st.

Here’s the official synopsis for Guardians of the Galaxy:

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team – the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits – Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand – with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” is presented by Marvel Studios. The film releases August 1, 2014, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

PLEASE tell me “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” is what plays over the credits.

  • vitextreeradar

I hope the pina colada song plays over a battle scene

Glad to know there’ll be some good music during the credits cause the lord knows we’ll all be sitting through them

As much as I’m looking forward to this movie, but c’mon to be totally honest, the use of “Hooked On A Feeling” isn’t exactly too maverick or groundbreaking. And it kind of pains me to have to do this, too, but the credit probably has to go to Tarantino for blowing the dust off that song and making it popular again to the post-2000 mainstream audience. and to be fair it seems like a fair amount of other productions have also used it in varying degrees over the last few years.

Also, lots of “Love” songs on there. C’mon..really? Come and Get Your Love in a Sci Fi?

well… but I’ve got faith that they’ll be able to use them in a cool subversive, big ole’ wink-to-the-audience kind of context.

And I said it before..and some of you said my argument was invalid cause Hooked on a Feeling was in Res. Dogs…but the song choices in this movie are going to be looked at as a “WTF” just like they were in Watchmen. I want to love this movie, but those songs all annoy the hell out of me. Ally McBeal dancing with the imaginary baby to Hooked on a Feeling is all I see.

In this case they’re not just arbitrary choices but relevant to the plot. The main character actually has this mix tape and listens to it on an old walkman. Personally I like the songs but I think that context makes them that much more appropriate for the film.

I get that, and you make a great point. Maybe I need to familiarize myself with the backstory more and not be to quick to let my distaste of those songs come into play. Ive been waiting for this movie for the last year and half!! Im beginning to wonder if I am showing my age. At 40, I am used to sci fi movies having either sweeping epic music (Star Wars) or rock (Dune/Flash Gordon). Maybe its time I just….dare it say…let it go…

      • Demotte,Ind

I guess my new name is Demotte,Ind

    • Vulcan

I loved the song choices in Watchmen. They all fit the time periods perfectly, and some of the songs were even mentioned in the graphic novel, or in the case of “The Times are A Changing” the words were actually written out.

  • Monkeeboy

This just keeps getting better and better.

found a playlist on Spotify with all the tracks, such a good album!

  • Strong Enough

so we still get tyler bates’s score tho right?

    • http://collider.com Matt Goldberg

Sure, but I assume that will be sold as a separate album.

      • Strong Enough

Cool, cool. i’m a film score junkie
