Marvel has released a new Guardians of the Galaxy trailer.  The story follows five intergalactic misfits—Peter Quill aka Starlord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel), and Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper)—as they set out to recapture a powerful and mysterious orb from the villainous Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace).  Gunn continues to knock it out of the park when it comes to song choice in these trailers, and this extended preview officers a sufficient tease of the film’s scale as well as closer looks at the two CG characters: Rocket and Groot.  I really love how Marvel is just swinging for the fences with this movie, and I hope audiences embrace the lovable goofiness come August.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer and click here for our full rundown of the highlights from the recent Guardians Q&A.  The film also stars Benicio Del Toro, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, John C. ReillyPeter Serafinowicz, Michael Rooker, and Glenn CloseGuardians of the Galaxy opens in 3D on August 1st.

Here’s the official synopsis for Guardians of the Galaxy:

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team – the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits – Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand – with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” is presented by Marvel Studios. The film releases August 1, 2014, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

Looks awesome. Looking forward to it.

Nice touch adding Rocket scratching his balls at the end (2:09-2:12)

    • gph-artist

The whole trailer had me smiling but that moment was pure brilliance.

  • Jonze

I’m not gonna lie that shot of the Guardians walking down the hall reminded me of the intro to Reservoir Dogs. Hope it does really well but I don’t know if it’ll do monster business.

  • Daniel Ronczkowski

I am loving the music they are using for this…

    • Neo Racer

Yea they will sell more of the song than the movie tickets lol

      • NICK НΛRT

i don’t even know where to start with you..

      • derek

Well at the top of a volcano is a good start

  • http://mattedscreen.blogspot.com/ TheMattedScreen

that’s how you cut a trailer, tell us enough, show a little, and leave us wanting more, very excited for August

  • http://www.collider.com/ DNAsplitter

Looks great! My concern is will audiences outside of fanboys and superhero enthusiast come see this movie? My head says yes because it’s got the Marvel logo which is about as good as Pixar but I think the wierd/different type of nature of this film might make others less interested. Just adding that the group of people who I saw Captain America w (half not into comics) were very divided about the 1st trailer. The non-comic people really thought it was a strange looking movie that they had no interest in at all. My guess is this will wind up making above The Incredible Hulk but below Captain America:First Avenger.

    • Neo Racer

My point exactly, this will be lucky to do as bad as Hell Boy B.O.

      • brNdon

I can’t wait to laugh in your stupid online face when this movie turns out to be a huge success, troll.

      • Neo Racer

Fan boys will love it! Question is- will ‘mom & pops’? That will determine its success.

      • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

I think the Marvel in its name will make that happen. Even mom and pops follow these movies now, and if it’s made clear to them that they need to see it to know what’s going on a few movies down the road, they will.

      • ✖ Éva ✖

Well the “mom & pops” will go see it, because all their kids are going to be super hyped for the next Marvel movie.

      • vpuik

Hopefully the lego sets, coloring books, story books, costume sets, school supplier etc. will get the kids to bring their parents.

      • Old Soldier

I’m a Grand-”pops”, and I’ll be there without the kids.

      • Rob

Life must be so awful in your negative little bubble.

      • Christian Leroux

I get your arguments, but you are misjudging Marvel’s marketing power. Hellboy’s a franchise that has a niche fanbase that was made before comic book movies became “the shit.” Guardians is the link between Phase 2 and Phase 3 + Agents of Shield. I would be incredibly surprised if it didn’t come close or match Capt. America’s current gross (700 million). Hellboy 2 made 160 million. If Guardians makes less than double that, I will film myself eating a hat and post it online.

    • LL

reasons i care about this film despite it being a comic book movie — Karen Gillan, Chris Pratt, humour, action, buzz

    • Angel of Death

I think for sure it’ll hit #1 at the B.O. its opening weekend with about $45-50 mil out of sheer curiosity, the Marvel brand, and lack of strong tentpoles in August. This doesn’t unfortunately have as much recognition and familiarity with mainstream audiences as Thor and Captain America did in their debuts, and they did about $60 mil each, en route to about $170 each…However, if the movie is good, and if people respond to it, word of mouth could carry this thing over $180 mil domestic. That would be very impressive for an unknown property, and would definitely make this a breakout franchise starter…fingers crossed :)

    • Oolie zool

This stuff is mainstream now. Especially when it has the Marvel logo attached to it. Studios wouldn’t be throwing the kind of money at these things that they are if they didn’t know that.

    • Dmula

My boys 11 and 7 are very excited for it and they’ve never seen or heard of them before,it’s possible.I think it’ll put up Thor numbers at the box office

    • GrimReaper07

“it’s got the Marvel logo which is about as good as Pixar”

lol. I hope you’re just talking about the Box Office.

  • http://www.rockydavies.com/ RockyDavies

This has been my most anticipated movie of the year. Each new thing just gets me more excited. I love the tone, the sarcasm, the overall “fun” the movie looks to embody. We have so many blockbusters looking to be so serious or to be taken seriously. Its great to see one that just says, “come, have some fun, have some laughs, see something crazy.”

  • shawn

the only movie im looking forward to this summer

    • Mike

Dawn of the planet of the Apes and Xmen bro

      • cruzzercruz

Maybe he’s not interested in them, bro.

      • Mike

Obviously not but I feel he’s making a mistake. To proudly claim that this movie is the only appealing movie of the entire summer, seems not only false, but incredibly narrow minded. And odd, considering this looks pretty “weird”.

      • cruzzercruz

I’m going to see Days of Future Past, but I’m not particularly excited for it. And I didn’t care for the last Planet of the Apes, so I’m unsure if I’ll see the next one. But there’s Lucy and other things I’m interested in seeing this summer. It must just be an unfortunate year for Shawn and his taste in summer movies.

  • bidi

still don’t have much in the way of story. and i was really hoping Bradley Cooper would’ve done something with the voice. but this movie just looks like an absolute blast

    • rikomenzies

That’s good, though. This is the first time in a long while that we’ve watched a trailer and not have the entire plot of the movie on hand already.

    • cruzzercruz

We keep hearing him growl things, but I think once we see him have some actual dialogue scenes playing out, it might feel a little bit better. But I do wish they had gone with someone else.

Colorful. Actually reminds me of the visual palette of Speed Racer.

  • Django9000

Just watched Fast & Furious 6, & couldn’t resist picturing every line read by Vin Diesel being spoken by the Iron Giant. Lol. Good to see he’s still down for some solid voice-over work.

Don’t know about that last line by John C. Reilly. Trailers are supposed to inspire confidence in a product, not make fun of its potential failure to connect.

Regardless, Marvel has my dollars. Nuff said.

  • I’m grooting for this one!

I’m not understanding why some people think this movie won’t do well. It can’t be expected to perform to the same level as Captain America or Dark Knight, but it will still be a success. I know a “technical success” means it earns 3x its budget, but the most important “success” is if people love it and it earns stellar reviews. Then it will be remembered and celebrated for being more than a “top 10 of all time” box office success. Marvel/Paramount/Disney is in no danger of going bankrupt if it’s not a technical success. They should be more worried about people disliking it and battering it into obscurity with harsh reviews.

But the movie looks perfect. The action, charm, visual effects, and talent make for a surefire two hours of blissful entertainment that will no doubt have endless re-watch value. The Marvel logo doesn’t hurt either. =)

    • awer

yeah too bad no one went to see Dredd

      • aceshigh

Dredd didn’t have the Disney/Marvel marketing juggernaut behind it. Totally different scenario.

      • Polarboy

I think I heard it did well in DVD sales, so much so that it may even justify a sequel.

      • change.orgasm

There was a petition behind the sequel in addition to a “Dredd Day” which was supposed to encourage people to promote Dredd guerrilla style. Not sure if it was successful, but we’ll get a sequel eventually. Just have to wait for the planets to align.

      • Mike

Or the raid 2. I’m still mad at all of you over that.

      • Reel Film Is Dead

I’m still dying to see The Raid 2, but it’s limited release = not playing anywhere near me. Send the hate mail to the theaters for not showing it…

      • cruzzercruz

It was also a hard-R, which is an entirely different league from a PG-13 Marvel film.

  • skeet

    Yesssss

  • Django9000

Lee Pace as Ronan looks badass. Wish they’d use his full name in the promo material, as Ronan “the Accuser” has got to be one of the greatest last names ever. :) So psyched!

    • Grayden

I think it falls more into line with a title than a surname. It must be a Kree thing; Ronan the Accuser, Korrath the Pursuer, etc.

      • Django9000

I “like” this due to tour lack of ability to see a clear joke. But seriously- wouldn’t you change your last name if you could be “Grayden The Accuser “? If not, I weep for your loss of imagination in your life ;)

      • Mike

If your original post contained a joke, it wasn’t funny. You were merely pointing out that you think they should have used his name in the title, while the person who responded, was offering an extra piece of info about the Kree. Nothing either of you said was funny at all.

  • Drake

It looks bonkers in a way that we haven’t seen from this sort of movie since Scott Pilgrim vs. the World!

    • Mario Movie

      How about Zombieland?

  • Strong Enough

They need to show more of the raccoon. Thats what going to bring the crowds. All my mom remembers from the first trailer was the fuckin raccoon.

    • aceshigh

They can’t overdo it too early.

    • Aquartertoseven

Who cares about the raccoon? I’m far more interested in Groot.

      • cruzzercruz

A ton of people are interested in Rocket. My mother saw the trailer and thought he was the greatest thing ever. She called me and asked me what the hell that was and when can she see it.

      • Strong Enough

        Mostly everybody

  • NICK НΛRT

And what’s with Pratt lording his newfound star status over everyone?

    • mbmarquis69

      (slow clap)

  • JBug

The world(s) they created look(s) beautiful. Drax looks amaxing, as does the brief clip of The Collector. Personally, I’m not buying Pratt yet as Star Lord, but Andy is one of my favorite characters on TV, so I’ll definitely keep an open mind.

  • DjangoBro

As much as I am excited to see this, i’m still not sold on Chris Pratt. I don’t know… I’m just not feeling him. I wish they’ve got someone a lot more charismatic but doesn’t come off as annoying.

    • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

You’re not supposed to be able to feel Pratt. It’s a 2D medium.

      • DjangoBro

Hmmm, you are right indeed Walker.

      • DjangoBro

Hmmm, you are right indeed Walker.

    • MJ

Come on, he’s the best thing about this trailer. He’s channeling Han Solo in spades.

  • Jack le Critic

If Godzilla can do $93m, then this will clear $100m opening weekend – easy :)

    • DEADP00L

I doubt that dude. GOG isn’t very well known outside of the geekverse and some people might think it’s just another kids movie. Plus I think Apes might do well like Godzilla before GOG does. I would be surprised if GOG broke though.

      • Redjester

Avatar wasn’t well known either (obviously), and look how that movie performed. It’s honestly all about marketing the film right. If they do that, it should perform rather nicely.

      • DEADP00L

It preformed under the marketing of 3d and motion capture and also – on James Cameron. Who hadn’t directed a movie since Titanic and he literally used titanic as a pitch. More people went in just for the visuals as Avatar was pitching 3d like it was some new element discovered. It was nauseating.

This is a marvel movie that’s the only thing going for it. Then again even thor wasn’t well known and he did well so we’ll just have to see.

      • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

That element being subtly named like, Ijustdiscovered3Donium.

      • MJ

LOL — this will do well, but this ain’t Avatar.

  • Polarboy

I know it would have been my own fault for watching it, but thank good they didn’t give away the whole story in this trailer, as has been the norm with trailers recently.

  • DEADP00L

Why am I not in this?! How could they not put me in this, the raccoon and I would be roommates!

  • DEADP00L

Deadpool and Rocket – the movie.

  • St. jack

First Marvel bomb. Like Pratt but i don’t thi k this one is going to work.

    • Redjester

I’m thinking the exact opposite. I bet this is going to perform far better than expected. The fact that no one has ever seen a movie like this will probably garner a good amount of intrigue. Of course the marketing has to be on point too, especially the month leading up to the films release.

      • Polarboy

I think it will be good but it’s a bit of a stretch to say that no one has seen a movie like this before. It’s a movie about a group of misfit, anti-hero space pirate’s, exactly the sort of thing I like but in no way original, e.g almost every movie set in space before and after Star Wars.

    • Liderc

long as they promote it well, people are going to eat this up. It has a ton of relatable actors in it and it’s not a stupid sequel. Iron Man 3 sucked, Spider Man 2 sucked, Thor 2 was HORRIBLE, Cap 2 was decent but not really a comic book movie. This is really their first comic book movie since Iron Man 1

MEH….looks boring. I wanted more of that silly humor we saw in the first trailer. otherwise its just another desensitizing comic book movie.

This is why we can’t have nice things, because idiots spew shit about them immediately upon release.

Love the trailer, but the CGI and dubbed voice on Rocket Racoon doesn’t come across as very convincing…looks fake with bad lip syncing.

They should have brought in WETA to do Rocket. I am not impressed with how he looks and sounds from the Marvel in-house special effects team here.

Yea, exactly what I was thinking.
