Marvel has released the first trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy.  Led by half-human, half-alien Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), the team is comprised of humanoid aliens Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), talking raccoon Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), and Groot (Vin Diesel), a giant, walking tree.  If you were at last year’s Comic-Con, you’ll recognize a lot of the footage, but for the majority of audiences this first look gives a great sense of tone and the type of humor on display in the film.  We also get a solid look at Karen Gillan as Nebula and Benicio Del Toro as The Collector; a dozen new still images from the film can be found here.

Lee Pace, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close, Michael Rooker, Djimon Hounsou, and Peter Serafinowicz also star in the comic book adaptation directed by James Gunn.  Guardians of the Galaxy opens in 3D on August 1st.  Watch the trailer after the jump.

Official synopsis:

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team – the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits – Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand – with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” is presented by Marvel Studios. The film releases August 1, 2014, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

Actually, a registered user can only downvote once, as evidence by their being only a single downvote on his comment.

Honestly this commenting season is so simple, I would have thought even a monkey could do it.

    This wil be epic!

Looks Awesome, waited for so long, since they announced the movie to see what it looks like and am very happy!

  • orianalianna

I sooooo wanted to get a trailer of nothing but villains not an intro to the heroes. *sigh* I guess the non-comic geeks are the ones this trailer is aiming for.

    • Brook

Um, the actual comic book reading community is less that a percent of all Americans.

They had a hard enough time getting people to buy into the idea of Thor, however the simple idea of the character had been in pop culture. But these are characters hardly anyone outside of HARDCORE comic/movie fans are aware of.

      • orianalianna

        I feel so small… -_-*

      • Nathan

Those are good points, but I disagree with Thor.
His character has been around for a LONG time and is remembered far more then the actual Thor legend. Not to mention that the zany-ness of the concept is what actually drove people to the theatres anyway. Same with GotG, I bet you anything the idea of the Racoon will attract more people then the other characters.

  • Brook

Thank god they aired it when they did. I was not about to sit through an interview with Bill O’Reilly.

    • ScratStitch

      Amen!

    • cruzzercruz

They aired it before the interview!? I tuned in, saw that the guest was Bill O’Reilly, and said, “I guess I’ll be seeing it tomorrow.”

  • Scurvy

Excellent trailer. Gave me enough to confirm my need to see the movie without giving the whole damn thing away.

Anyone get a Raiders-in-Space vibe from the opening? Anyway, looks fantastic. But it’s also gonna be Marvel’s biggest challenge as a box office sell.

  • YodaRocks

Is this movie supposed to be a caricature/satire of the Marvel comic world? As of now, I am sorry, its not working. I am not getting why every commentator here seems to like it.

    • Jeff Fincher

It’s pretty in line with the Marvel world, not really a satire. But you do have to go a bit away from the core Marvel to get into the space adventures. I think Guardians and Starjammers are the only two real space teams (FF does their share of space stories), only Guardians apparently have more…..well, smart ass characters in it. I’ve not read the comics, but I’ve seen a lot of fans say they hope the film keeps the humor.

I love the slightly awkwardness to the humor in the trailer myself. Starlord has a feeling of a mix between Mal from Firefly and Drake from Uncharted. I remember someone linking a picture where Groot needed water in a weakened, miniaturized state….Rocket spit on him to help out.

It’s going to have its own vibe and will be a departure from the standard Avengers line up, which is good imo. Marvel needs to be willing to depart from the beaten path with other properties, both on the silver and small screen.

      • The_Smirking_Revenge

        Well said, sir.

      • http://mysite.verizon.net/vzepr1xp/index.html unsean

Visually, it seems spot-on. Tonally, I am not quite so sure.

    • Zarles

I bet there are a lot of things you don’t get.

    • The_Smirking_Revenge

Guardians isn’t for everyone, but it is pretty amazing. Go read one of the comics.

    • cruzzercruz

These characters are constantly mocked in their own comics by everyone around them who thinks they’re a bunch of useless misfits, despite the fact that two of them are murderous assassins. In the grand scheme of the cosmos, they appear insignificant. But they always overcome and do it in sloppy, breakneck style that’s totally awesome. The trailer embodied that perfectly.

  • http://nasirjones.com NaS

James Gunn is the same director who made Super, one of the worst films I have ever had the displeasure of viewing.

    • The_Smirking_Revenge

No accounting for taste. He also made Slither, which was fantastic.

      • http://mysite.verizon.net/vzepr1xp/index.html unsean

Gotta agree with The Unhealer (The Wounder, The Bloody Mess? Just caught up on that tag) in that Super was a bit of a mess. Nothing quite jelled for me, though Slither was almost brilliant at times.

    • Theodore Trout

Arguably the best superhero film ever.

      • Batt Damon

He also wrote The Specials, another great take on the superhero genre

    • Solgazer

Super rocked! Was so strange and different; really had something to say, had the most insane finale and was a totally unique vision for a deranged super hero. Did you watch it for what it was or what you wanted it to be?

    Movies to be made!

    1.SpiderWoman
    2.Inhumans
    3.DEADPOOL!!!!!

    • ʝoe ßloggs

      SpiderWoman?? Really??

      • orianalianna

You lack vision! She would be great and the hydra plot is a good element.

      • ʝoe ßloggs

        Riiiiiiggght…

      • orianalianna

What’s the alternative? Black Widow? She’s absolutely boooooring she contributes absolutely nothing. At least SpiderWoman has super powers and in both Marvel and DC female super heroes are in short supply.

      • ʝoe ßloggs

I disagree that female superheroes are in short supply. Quite a few of them have been featured already through the various Marvel and Fox franchises (BW, Sue Storm, Mystique, Jean Grey / Dark Phoenix, etc.). My issue with your comment is the general ambivalence of Spider Woman as a a top female superhero. Why not more recognisable female heroes like Ms Marvel, She-Hulk, etc.?

      • cruzzercruz

They are in very short supply. There hasn’t been a single film that focuses on one of them not as someone’s love interest or supporting role. The closest we’ve gotten is Black Widow, but even she hasn’t really gotten a chance to shine.

      • orianalianna

Precisely! There hasn’t been a Marvel or DC female stand alone hero movie. Susan Storm was never her own woman to have a stand alone film – she’s apart of a group. But Spider-Woman, and Ms.Marvel both have been stand alone characters with both working for and against SHEILD at one point or another. So there is absolutely no real reason to keep these two female characters from having their own franchise.

If Josh can make Buffy the Vampire Slayer work, they can make Spider-Woman and Ms.Marvel work.

      • cruzzercruz

Marvel is already trendsetting, why stop now? Bring the world the first female centric superhero movie, and really show DC how it’s done.

      • ʝoe ßloggs

I would disagree that they are trendsetting. The trend is being set as we speak by both camps – as well as Fox, Sony, et al. I’m not saying that to fan a useless Marvel vs DC argument. I like characters from both sides.

      • cruzzercruz

Marvel is most certainly trendsetting in that they’re creating shared universes (which Fox and DC immediately jumped on), utilizing lesser known characters (which hopefully others will too), and focusing on hiring people who are actually well suited to work on their respective films. Whether you love all of their movies or not, they have certainly created a stronger formula that others are beginning to follow. Adding a greater number of better fleshed out female characters is something they can do, and do well.

      • ʝoe ßloggs

Shared universe creation is only one aspect of trend. It can also be argued that DC is creating trend by their holistic approach to live action (TV and Film) and Animation. Superman and Batman were the earliest depictions of heroes in live-action. Today, DC is a leader in TV live-action and Marvel is a clear laggard in this regard. Same story with Animation. It can also be argued that Sony with the Raimi Spider-Man series (started in 2002) set the ‘trend’ for blockbuster superhero films. So too with Fox’s X-Men series (started earlier in 2000). Marvel’s Phase 1 only started in 2008 with Iron-Man. That’s a clear 8 years AFTER Fox. Who set the precedent trend there?

Hence to suggest that Marvel is the trend-setter and that all others are merely followers is an off-balanced view and disregards certain facts.

To suggest that Marvel’s formula is “stronger” is also debatable. You could argue that their phased approach is more coordinated and serves several objectives – streaming in more characters, building shared universe, etc. But DC-Warner, Sony and Fox haven’t been making peanuts from their own individual strategies. Therefore your “Marvel has a stronger formula” is merely an opinionated statement which bears limited confirmation through actual results. One could also argue that DC’s approach with regards to film projects (which carry higher risk) is Market Follower – let Marvel carry the risk and DC follows after for likely reward and as Market Leader in others e.g. TV series (Smallville, Arrow, Flash, etc.). These are all competitive strategies which firms follow.

Please note that I am not a fanboy of any camp.

      • HBICkellz

Marvel is trendsetting. Ever since they started their own shared universe everyone wants to join the bandwagon now. Even Fox who sacrificed continuity just to join the party. Take the blinders off dude.

      • ʝoe ßloggs

You know, your attempt to say that I have blinders on and blah blah is simply reflective of your inability to engage in meaningful debate without resorting to personal and assumptive statements.

Also, what continuity? There is a difference between the cinematic universe vs the comicbook universe.

      • http://mysite.verizon.net/vzepr1xp/index.html unsean

They are, and it will more than likely star Black Widow.

      • ʝoe ßloggs

I’m confused here. So which is it? Female characters are in short supply or that they need to be featured as stand-alone characters or both?

I stand by my point that females HAVE indeed been featured in various movies – here’s some more Elektra, Catwoman (these two had shit stand-alone films), WW (stand-alone 80s TV series), Emma Frost, Scarlet Witch (coming), Poison Ivy, Rogue, Storm, Blink (coming), Talia Al Ghul, Carol Ferris, Gamora and Nebula (coming)…and the list goes on and on. Hence female superheroes are not in short supply.

However I do agree that most of them are part of an ensemble – and for good reason for most of them as well. Even DC struggles to position WW as a stand-alone character.

      • cruzzercruz

Now compare that to the infinitely longer list of male characters, and also consider the quality of those representations. Out of that list, maybe two or three have even been decent characters in their films. The goal isn’t just to expand female representation in these films, but prove that they can actually be great characters, stand alone or otherwise.

      • ʝoe ßloggs

This is not separate from what I’m saying or think about the matter. Do you think I’m saying otherwise? My original contention – if you come back to the initial discussion was Spider Woman being a more compelling female character as opposed to other female superhero characters. I wasn’t debating that shouldn’t be more female superhero characters or that their roles shouldn’t be expanded.

Stop reading your own interpretation between the lines in order to push your own ideas and putting words into my mouth.

I stand by all my comments.

      • HBICkellz

Buffy had no powers I’m surprised you didn’t attack her also.

      • cruzzercruz

Well, technically she had enhanced strength and reflexes.

      • orianalianna

Yes she did she had the powers of the slayer – super strength, speed and agility. There was an episode where she lost her POWERS as a right of accession – so yes she did factually have powers. Slayer power.

      • orianalianna

Also, I didn’t attack Black Widow. She is a regular human being – with a gun. That’s it that makes her boring compared to the actual super heroes. That’s not an attack that’s just a fact.

      • doc

Aren’t you forgetting about Elektra and Catwoman? Maybe thats why.

      • HBICkellz

The fact that you think those are enough and of equal representation is disgusting.

      • ʝoe ßloggs

“Disgusting”? You are being over-dramatic there. Your attempt to insinuate / imply that I am gender discriminate is pathetic and couldn’t be further from the truth.

The point is not that I think they are enough. I just said they are not in short supply.

Not being in short supply does not equal not enough.

This has fundamentally to do with the number of female comic characters as compared to men – probably outnumbered 4:1 as a guesstimate.

Hence, it is logical to assume of that smaller number, the good ones are even lesser. But if you check the various comicbook films over the last decade or so, you’ll see that a lot of the ‘Top 10′ female superheroes have been featured in one way or the other.

      • HBICkellz

Yet Batman has no powers and the dumb ass gets movies made left and right. Believe it or not Marvel needs to start with Black Widow. She would pave the way for other female led superhero films. (Who knows when Wonder Woman will get her shine) It is DISGUSTING that people like you feel the need to attack one female in favor of another. Why not embrace all?

The only chance Spider Woman has is if a BW movie get’s made first. So swallow your pride and SEETHE.

      • cruzzercruz

Spider-woman would be fantastic as a side character in one of these films. Jessica Drew is a SHIELD agent and she kicks ass.

      • ʝoe ßloggs

Sure. As a “side character” as you said.

    • The_Smirking_Revenge

They’ve been trying to get Deadpool off the ground for a while now. There’s even some pretty amazing test footage out there. Fox is afraid of Deadpool, they don’t know how to handle the ultra violent material and it’d be pointless and stupid to tone it down. I know Ryan Reynolds has fought pretty hard to get a good version of the character on screen, he and the filmmakers are big proponents of an R-rated movie.

    • Batt Damon

There’s a strong possibility that they’re building up Skye from Agents of SHIELD to be Spiderwoman.

      • orianalianna

Not Jessica? Are they seriously going to mess with the continuity like that? BOO! No! Jessica’s backstory is amazing and personal not something out of the blue and expandable.

      • doc

        Continuity? That’s funny.

      • orianalianna

They have been keeping true to the civil war line this entire time with a few exceptions but still.

      • cruzzercruz

Man, I hope not. I’m still watching the show, and she’s barely anything more than eye candy. Mainly in one episode.

I just realised that Adam Warlock is probably tied up with the Fantastic Four licence. Boooooooooo

      • cruzzercruz

Oh god, I hope not. What a way to squander that. Maybe Marvel has some gray area to work with, like they do with Scarlett Witch and Quicksilver.

      • chrisills

Hopefully, I’m completely wrong and Marvel still holds the rights to Warlock. But like you say, maybe there is some room for manoeuvre.

      • Nathan

Eh, FF is with Fox right? They will sell anything for cash, Warlock will be with marvel soon enough

    • James

I agree. It just feels…wrong…to have a storyline involving Thanos and not have Warlock involved somehow. I know Thanos was first introduced as an Iron Man foe, but he and Warlock just go hand in hand now.

      • chrisills

James, I feel ya pain bro. It makes me wonder what kind of a deal was struck when Marvel released the X-Men, as we will have two versions of Quicksilver on screen. Hopefully a character like Adam Warlock wasn’t included in the Fantastic Four deal.

You should check out Thor 2. It’s pretty great! MUCH more fun being had that the first one by far! The first one did a great job but it was a bit dour in overall tone. The sequel was a lot looser and Loki, OMG Loki is really really great.

I liked the first better. It is not cut down to be short sequel to get more view slots in theaters as Thor 2! Also, first one was more visually appealing film with right amount of humor. Second one over did it with adding more screentime for Dannings character (they even add one more useless character to her). Adding more time to useless, mostly unfunny character while cutting whole films running time didn’t do it for me.

I thought Thor and Thor 2 were disney girly movies. Captain was decent. This one looks good enough. Maybe they’re overdoing it with the fun fact. I like the cast. It remindes me of The Losers. But I don’t think I care for the plot enough. And I don’t really like the idea of getting everything together in an “EPIC” movie at the end. Thor 2 had too large a cast already, Captain 2 looks like that too. Avengers has 30 main cast members. What is going to happen after the Guardians? 50 main cast (Villains/Heroes)?

  • mattinacan

wow really surprised how good this looks!

  • ALbert

    What a poorly made trailer.

Seems to be quite a generic introduction to the film – instead of really showing off how the tone and style will work… I’m holding judgement, as I’m hoping this’ll be something special (as it’s got all the right ingredients, or so it seems.) But whoever cut together this trailer, or whatever notes they got from the studio regarding it, needs to get their act together for the second one…

    • Joseph M

Did you hear that, Hollywood? He’s holding judgement, so get it right!

It seemed to me that the one thing the trailer did show off was the tone. It introduced the characters (which is good because no one knows who they are) and the tone (which is good because no one knows who they are), but it didn’t give us much plot (which isn’t too big of a deal for a first trailer).

      • Nathan

I’m actually hoping they DON’T give away so much of the plot like so many other trailers, Tone and characters is really what a trailer is for first and foremost, unless it’s a high concept film (like Speed).

      • Lex Walker

Please tell me we’re calling Speed “high concept” ironically. Dear god…

      • Texas Ranger

I don’t think you understand the definition of “high concept” – it is a slightly oxymoronic phrase, so I can understand… But Speed is certainly a “high concept” picture…

      • Nathan

I mean “high concept” as in the concept of the film alone draws the audience rather then characters or tone. Nobody went to see Speed just to see Keanu Reeves playing a random cop.

      • Lex Walker

Please tell me we’re calling Speed “high concept” ironically. Dear god…

  • Broland

If I never knew about Gamora’s comic incarnation, you would think nothing ill of the character. The comic version is a rather juvenile and badly designed character with the need to show off so much skin.

But its typical of Marvel writers of the era including Stan Lee and Chris Claremont. They created all these characters but when it came to realistic storylines and making everything mesh together while adding human attributes a lot of the stuff was rather amateurish. So Hollywood must refine these concepts a lot.

    • cruzzercruz

Even her modern incarnation is kind of just a hotheaded nympho. She hasn’t really been given much to work with other than her origin. Maybe they can rectify some of that in the film.

  • Redjester

Alright, who here doesn’t think this looks like a blast?

    • Nathan

      DC Fanboys BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
      (kidding!)

    • vpuik

People who have something against fun.

  • Colin Christian

Well,I think it looks very promising indeed, love the production design and feel of the first trailer, count me in!

Hopefully this marks a return of sci-fi adventure films (or at least GREAT sci-fi adventure films), it’s been too long…

    • Redjester

A return to GREAT sci-fi adventure films would be if they decided to make Asimov’s Galactic Empire book series into a film series.

That done the right way might qualify as great.

  • Johnny209

Had no expectations for this movie, had no idea what Gaurdians even was…now this is on my must watch list. Looks amazing!

  • Christian Grey

Boy, YOU GUYS ARE EASY TO PLEASE. Did you guys saw the same trailer as i did??? The trailer looks very normal, slow and not a mind blower, as it should have, like for most of the marvel movie trailers. Super movie Trailer was way better compare to this one. This trailer must be made only for the diehard fans who is happy to see any clip or trailer for the time being and will appreciate anything and not made for everyone else :(
Only good thing from this trailer is seeing Groot and Rocket Raccoon in action.
Cant wait to see this movie :) 164 MORE DAYS TO GO :D

    • Nathan

And yet, you’re still excited for the film.
      I’m not judging, just observing.

I dunno, I personally prefer it when a trailer keeps the plot in the dark, we find out enough on the internet as it is.

      • Christian Grey

Im pysched for the movie. But, no so much for this trailer though. I’m just saying, they could have done a lot better than this. Looks like a low budget marvel movie Nathan. The only reason i watched Super is because of the trailer. Not for the cast or the director. Just saying.

You are right about the spoilers nathan. but, Im not talking about the spoiler. This trailer just doesnt have the Wow Factor.

      • Redjester

Christian Grey, like “Fifty Shades of Grey” Christian Grey?

I wasn’t aware the same crowd went for both these types of films. Learn something new every day!

      • Christian Grey

Im christian grey for the past 27 years. Not that famous BDSM loving asshole in the book for the past couple of years. And whats with your name. Shouldn’t it spell Register and not Redjester. What Register was already taken or something :)

Lol, fair enough. I guess that’s what happens when you “assume”.

Well, judging by the general response on the interwebz from non-comic book nerds and people who have no idea who Rocket Racoon is, it seems you’re in the minority on this one.

But thanks for trying make us feel stupid for liking something you didn’t. I see that’s gone over real well. :)

  • Steven

Still not sure what this thing is but it looks great. Love the raccoon.

  • milo

Movies about misfit super heroes are notoriously hard to pull off but it looks like this one may do it. I loved Mystery Men but it didn’t do well at all. Marvel has been nailing the straight up superhero movies for the most part so far, now it looks like they’ll do just fine with a more comedic one.

Anyone else thinks this looks pleasantly similar to THE FIFTH ELEMENT in tone? Could bode well.

  • Doug_101

I’m still looking forward to it, but the humor just kind of fell flat for me here. I liked Reilly’s line about who calls Peter Star Lord, but the rest of it felt forced. I’m hoping for the best though and I’m excited at the buddy potential of Groot and Rocket. The action looks great too.

    • Ruprect

Not forced at all, I found. Compare this to the recent trailer for Tammy, Melissa McCarthy’s new “comedy”, and you will see the difference.

      • Doug_101

Well, it’s apples and oranges, I think, but yeah, that movie doesn’t look good at all.

No nothing about this Marvel property other than what I have seen as of late. However, I am very much intrigued and will definitely watch this film.

OMG THIS IS THE BEST THING EVAAR! It’ll be the GREATEST MOVIE of ALL TIME! AZDHSTRFKHS! I’m going to DIE if I don’t see this TOMORROW!

      So, no?

  • Melwing

The park. Knocked it out of it, they did.

  • Faptain America

What a boring trailer. All the hype about the movie and then this? I was at least expecting Rocket or Groot to talk. Don’t intro the characters boringly. Have them talk to me. I’ll make the connection. How can you have Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel not talk in the trailer?
Do these characters have superpowers? What are their personalities? I got nothing except that the delivery guy from the Office is in a movie.

Seriously, waiting for trailer 2 now.

    • Slade

      I agree

    • The Destroyer

They did introduce them, by showing each of them in turn and saying that they are dangerous and a bunch of a-holes.
Also “Delivery Guy from the Office?” Are you talking about Chris Pratt? Because he was never in the Office. He is on Parks and Rec.

      • Faptain America

You’re right. This is the guy from the office: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0219292/

But it’s still a boring trailer after all the hype about Star Lord and Bradley Cooper’s amazing voice for Rocket Raccoon etc.

  • http://www.youtube.com/somejackball somejackball

    pumped as fuck!!

  • Slade

What a horrible trailer. I’m floored by how bad this made what should be a good movie look.

  • Crichton

I still have no idea where Marvel is aiming for an audience. Beyond the small number of comic book fans, what is the appeal? Also, this can get made but we will never see a Farscape movie,a show far more intelligent than the Marvel movies.

    • Ruprect

Yah, a funny, smart epic sci-fi space adventure. Pfft. Who the hell wants THAT?

i’m excited to see the movie dickhead

  • Redjester

I can’t figure out if Zoe Saldana looks better in Green or Blue…

    • Nathan

Considering she’s signed for three more Avatar films (and star trek) I bet she just shrugged and said… “Fuck it, I’ll own this look”

  • Seanpb

I quite like how this is met with near unanimous excitement – and yes, it looks like a lot of fun – because it looks and feels like the comic book, but Amazing Spider-Man 2, which also looks and feels like a comic book isn’t judged using the same schema

  • doc

This is how a trailer is supposed to look and feel. Introduce the characters and tease the visuals and tone without giving away the entire plot. Or in this case, any plot at all. I love it.

  • solgazer

Finally! Was it worth the wait? Yep.

  • Redjester

Anyone other than me hoping this song makes it into the actual film?

    • Redjester

Other songs that might be hilariously awesome:

Let the Good Times Roll- The Cars
I Will Walk 500 Miles- The Proclaimers
      Doot Doot- Freur

Joking, obviously. The above might be a little much, lol…

    • Nathan

Its actually a pet peeve of mine when the music in the trailer doesn’t end up in the film, although more so when it’s cinematic orchestrated music.

  • Dano

I just pee’d myself a little. How long until August??
