GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Concept Art Shows Unused Designs for Gamora and Nebula

I’m strongly considering picking up the Guardians of the Galaxy concept art book because it has to be filled with interesting designs.  I’m happy with almost everything in the finished feature, but I’m always curious about what could have been, and concept art always shows roads not taken.  Artist Andy Park has posted some of his unused designs for Thanos’ daughters Gamora and Nebula, and I think what he came up with was in some ways superior to what we saw in the finished feature.

Hit the jump to check out Park’s Guardians of the Galaxy unused concept art.

Park’s been releasing various designs over the past few weeks.  Here’s what he’s released for Gamora [via /Film]:

You can see that Gamora’s skin was more intricate and at one point she didn’t even have to be green.  On the one hand, I think this makes her more visually interesting, but overall, restraint was probably the best way to go when you consider that the team already had one heavily-tattooed humanoid.

As for Nebula, I like that Park’s designs make her look more powerful.  She still has the bald head and cybernetic eye-piece, but the piece is more pronounced in Park’s drawings than in the finished feature.  Compared to the character’s final look, you can see how much Nebula was scaled back.  I assume director James Gunn‘s thinking was that instead of making Nebula look like an unstoppable warrior, she should come off as the unimpressive sibling.  If she looks like too much of a badass, then Gamora would have to look even tougher.

Finally, here’s a team piece Park did at the start of the project:

I REALLY want more Gamorra in guardians 2. Even though she was probably the most undeveloped, I think she has the potential to have one of the better stories in the guardians. I also thought that Saldaana did a great job humanizing her, and it is my favorite role of hers so far.

I do prefer blue gamorra, though. Would have loved to see that.

I think she was arguably the most fleshed out along with Rocket of any character besides Star Lord

I thought Drax felt more realized, personally. His family was murdered and he wants revenge on the guy that did it. It’s easy to see where his motivations come from. Gamorra wanted to protect innocent lives and escape from thanos, but we’re never really told “why” in a way that felt satisfying to me.

I personally could have easily watched a 3 hour long guardians because I loved the Gamorra and all the other characters a lot, and I want to know more. Hope to see them go deeper in the next film.

Because she felt guilty that her “father” is a genocidal maniac obsessed with death, and it’s hinted that he might of killed her real parents.

The guilt is never really feels explained other than “gamorra is a good person!”, and since she is an assassin, I thought they should have elaborated on why she cares about innocent life so much. And “hinted” is pretty vague, and I would like to see them explore that further, is all I’m saying.

Especially since they included Nebula, I really wanted to see why one of them was loyal to thanos and one wasn’t. I loved the movie, and I know they had time constraints especially with so many other good characters to explore, but it was one quibble I had with GoTG 1.

I really enjoyed Drax, but I felt like they didn’t really establish him as a fighting badass. If I’m remembering correctly, they only showed him kicking ass in the prison scene, but that was on par with all the other guardians as well. I really want to see him be the ass kicker of the group since Bautista is so huge.

I mean I know the women want an ass kicker who represents women, and I want to see that too, but who doesn’t want to see a beast like Bautista fuck shit up?

I saw the movie this weekend. None of the characters had any real back story beyond a few lines they were given to describe how pained and misunderstood they are. Meh. Even Star Lord’s life was one short “mom dying” moment. We know nothing else. So why care? Because they tried to pull some Spielberg heart string? Worse yet, the primary vilian, Ronan was swimming in the shallow end along with them. Like most films which rely heavily on CGi, this one too, failed to show any great depth or involve the audience. Overall, the actors were good. The story was first semester film school. The costumes were okay.

And it made a bazillion dollars. Folks said Star Wars was film school 101 way back when.
Guess sometimes we need a reminder that Scorsese-style narrative film etc. really only possess so much mass appeal. Sometimes people simply want a roller coaster, instead of high art or a gripping novela… :/

Thems the breaks! (And that’s coming from someone who loves Scorsese, narrative & art film, epic novels – AND … roller coasters. :7

May think force be with you. :)

The story was great. What the hell are you talking about? It’s a comic book movie that went beyond the comic and gave us something akin to Star Wars or Babylon 5.

These designs make Nebula look more robotic than alien. And I think that could be confusing to some audience members, “Is she an alien or a robot?”

    • CapMarvel

Well, technically, she’s a cyborg, so…both. But it would have killed the reveal of just how mechanized she really is.

I have the book, but in my opinion it us the weakest of all the Marvel ‘Art of’ books (I have them all) because there is very little in the way of final designs, finished costumes, props, makeup etc. All the other books go into detail on that subject, but considering the sheer amount of eye candy in the movie, very little of it is in the book. It’s just concept, not finalized.Lots of scrappy sketchy digital work, only a Z- Brush of Thanos head is worth jumping up about. If you want pictures of Nebula or Ronan, look on the Internet, you will find more there.

i like these designs a lot more than what we saw in the film.
