The coveted lead role of Star-Lord in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy has been narrowed down to three possible suitors. From the original shortlist of actors that were reported as auditioning less than a month ago, only Jim Sturgess (Cloud Atlas) remains. A new addition in the form of Zachary Levi (Chuck) is also in the mix. The studio also reports that an unnamed actor may test for the lead after the holidays.

Star-Lord, aka Peter Quill, is a human-alien hybrid who is a master strategist and combat expert, wears an ability-enhancing suit, pilots a psychically-linked ship and leads the Guardians of the Galaxy. The film, directed by James Gunn (Slither) is expected to open August 1, 2014. Hit the jump for more on the audition process.

Variety reports that Zachary Levi - Guardians of the GalaxyLevi and Sturgess are the frontrunners for the lead of Guardians of the Galaxy, with a potential dark horse candidate waiting in the wings. Levi has long been in Marvel’s sights, with an offer to play the warrior Fandral in the original Thor, only to pass it up due to NBC ordering more episodes of Chuck. Interestingly enough, Levi will now step into the role Fandral in Thor: The Dark World, having replaced Josh Dallas. Although Levi has never led a feature, Marvel is reportedly impressed with his audition and is open to continuing and expanding their relationship.

Sturgess, on the other hand, has a number of lead credits to his name, including Robert Luketic’s 21, Peter Weir’s The Way Back and in Julie Taymor’s Across the Universe, not to mention multiple roles in the Wachowski Siblings’ Cloud Atlas. He also happened to lead a group of animated guardians in Zack Snyder’s Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’HooleWhat do you think, fans? Levi, Sturgess or should we put our money on an unknown?

  1. Sturgess is a raging homosexual of the highest order.

Honestly, that actor has never sat well with me.

No. Just no. Gimme that “unknown” actor or Levi.

    • are you sure you know what you are saying? have you even watched his films? i’m pretty sure you haven’t so just shut up!!

    • I know it’s a first amendment issue, but you guys have the right to delete this kind of ignorant, offensive, repulsive comments. If you think about it, it makes sense not to allow asshole like this a platform.
HOMOPHOBIA OF ANY KIND = RACISM OF ANY KIND

      • That would be prejudice, not racism, if you are going to proclaim someone is ignorant, do not appear so yourself.

  2. I like both of those actors, they do good in just about everything they’re in. However, isn’t that a bit of a continuity buster to put Levi in this as well as Thor: The Dark World? If that isn’t a problem for them, then please put Idris Elba as Black Panther. That being said, I know they’ll make the right choice, they’ve been making all the right choices since 2008 and it doesn’t look like they’ll be messing up any time soon.

  3. Levi is already in Marvel’s “Cinematic Universe” In Thor 2. It would be complete crap if they used him in this. I heard rumors of Joel Edgerton trying out for the part. That would have been fantastic!

  4. Zachary Levi is already playing Fandral in Thor: The Dark World. So there is no way that he can be Star-Lord. Unless the after credits scene shows that Fandral is Star-Lord in disguise and that leads to Guardians of the Galaxy. Nah
