Fans of Guillermo Del Toro are well aware of his notebooks.  They contain his writings and drawings spilled out on paper, and those designs eventually transform into the unforgettable images and stories we see in his amazing movies.  For some time now, I’ve wondered why those notebooks haven’t been published so that his fans could get a peek inside his thought process.  It turns out that book is almost here.  Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities (co-written by Marc Zicree) is along the lines of an annotated version of his notebooks.  It’s not a straight copy, but it also features pages elaborating on the original text and pictures.  In a new trailer for the book, Del Toro says he hopes this book will inspire young filmmakers in the same way he was inspired by visionaries such as Dick Smith, Rick Baker, and Forrest Ackerman.  It looks like a wonderful collection, and a must-own for Del Toro’s fans.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer, and click here to pre-order the book on Amazon for $36.00 (which is 40% off).  If you consider yourself one of his biggest fans, you can click here to pre-order the limited edition for $633.82. Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities will be released on October 29th, with the limited edition arriving on December 3rd.

Here’s the synopsis for Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities:

Over the last two decades, writer-director Guillermo del Toro has mapped out a territory in the popular imagination that is uniquely his own, astonishing audiences with Cronos, Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth, and a host of other films and creative endeavors. Now, for the first time, del Toro reveals the inspirations behind his signature artistic motifs, sharing the contents of his personal notebooks, collections, and other obsessions. The result is a startling, intimate glimpse into the life and mind of one of the world’s most creative visionaries. Complete with running commentary, interview text, and annotations that contextualize the ample visual material, this deluxe compendium is every bit as inspired as del Toro is himself.

Contains a foreword by James Cameron, an afterword by Tom Cruise, and contributions from other luminaries, including Neil Gaiman and John Landis, among others. [Amazon]
