Guillermo del Toro Talks THE HOBBIT slice

If you’re a fan of Guillermo del Toro, today is Christmas.  That’s because at tonight’s Saturn Awards, del Toro surprised everyone by attending the ceremony and answering a ton of questions backstage in the press room.  While most of us would have been happy to speak to him for 5 minutes, he continued talking to us for over 20 minutes!!  We literally got so much info out of him that we stopped asking questions.  I know it’s hard to believe, but after watching the interview, you’ll see we covered everything you could think to ask him.

During the 20 or so minutes we talked about The Hobbit, Hellboy 3, Frankenstein, Saturn and the End of Days, Death The High Cost of Living, Comic-Con, At the Mountains of Madness, his “Man Cave (his second house where he keeps all his collectibles) and so much more.  Trust me, if you’re a fan of GDT, this is a must watch interview.  And to make it easy, I’ve time indexed everything we talked about and listed some of the highlights after the jump.

Oh, and one thing he told me off camera…Criterion is going to release a Blu-ray of Cronos in December and it’s going to include a 15 minute documentary on his Man Cave!

Since some of you might not have the time to watch…here’s some highlights.

  • Wants to be shooting something in May of next year
  • At the Mountains of Madness is probably not going to happen due to many reasons (he explains in interview)
  • Hellboy 3 would only happen after his next project.  It’s definitely not his next film
  • Frankenstein – he is presenting the storyline to Universal and Doug Jones will play Frankenstein
  • Frankenstein screenplay is not done yet
  • At Comic-Con GDT will be promoting Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark. They are definitely announcing a project at Comic-Con that he will be writing, producing and maybe directing.  Says he is at Comic-Con for 3 days to do some shopping
  • His Man Cave is getting an addition.  He explains.
  • Says the 3 projects he is thinking about have scripts that are much further along.  Says the script he really wants to do he started 15 years ago!
  • Says his brother is making for him the car from the movie The Car starring James Brolin! He’ll be driving around Los Angeles in 3 months in it

Here’s the full interview.  It’s a great one.  Also, make sure to check back for a lot more video interviews from tonight’s Saturn Awards.

  1. What a great interview, laughed all the way through. I thought you're questions were the best. The other guys didn't seem to know what to ask. And he kept talking…..lol

Can't wait for his next film. What a nice guy he is.

  2. I honestly have no interest in another Frankenstein movie. I'm sure he would make a great Frankenstein movie but I would like him to do something more original.

Also will Doug Jones be playing Dr. Frankenstein or Frankensteins monster?

  3. Is it just me, or is the audio on this video completely wonky? I've had this issue with some other Collider videos. Does anyone experience the same thing? It makes it very difficult to listen.

  4. You are not alone. I am not sure what they are doing but the audio sounds out of phase or poorly aliased.

  5. So jealous that you got to spend time with this creative mind. Great questions, Steve. He seems so genuine and loves his art, which is telling a story. Awesome.

  6. He got lucky, The Hobbit is a kids book which is tonally quite different to LOTR. I've no interest in seeing it. Bilbo isn't even conscious for the final battle (Bit like Knight & Day!).

  7. “At the Mountains of Madness” would be hard to translate to film and remain faithful to Lovecraft.

  8. The thing is, so is Frankenstien, so is any great book really, but I think filmakers have a obligation to chart new terratory, and the biggest problem with film is people are constantly treading water. Stuart Gordon has made popular cult films bassed on Lovecrafts work on no budget. Imagine what Del Toro could do with Cthulu, Randolph Carter, Mountains of Madness. It will have it's flaws like anything else but people will like it. Think of how Lovecraft pops up time and time again in film, comics, toys, music, art, I've seven seend a Cthulu graduation cake. If your not going to take risk and explore cinema what's the point? Even the Wizard of Oz and 20,00 Leauges is long over do for a remake, imagine his take on those, where as their are new versions of Frankenstien nearly every year, and Monte Cristo at least once a decade.

  9. All I want him to do is Dr. Strange. The rest is immaterial to me know that he's not doing 'At the Mountains of Madness'

  10. He didn't abandon anything. The production may not even go forward. It's tied up at MGM which may yet go bankrupt. He has already devoted 3 years of his life to this and would be forced to spend another 3 years doing this without a proper green light on the project. What a waste. He has WAY too much he wants to do that he can't tie himself up for 6 years on something that may not even happen. Pull your head out.

  11. u call the the most creative directors out there who brought u hellboy 1/2, orphanage, the strain, and pans labryinth a traitor. u my friend r traitor for turning ur back on del torro. spending six yrs with no green lite is a waste. we mite not see bond 23 where director of road to perdition is rumored to be attached to.
he even said he isn't leaving. he's gonna help write it, but he's going back to new zeland

  12. None of the movies on that list have source anywhere NEAR the level of the Hobbit. The Hobbit could have been his second masterpiece, shame he left it.
