Opening in late August is director Troy Nixey’s Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark. Based on the 1973 telefilm, the remake was written by Guillermo del Toro and Matthew Robbins and “the story follows Sally (Bailee Madison), a young girl who moves to Rhode Island to live with her father (Guy Pearce) and his new girlfriend (Katie Holmes) in the 19th Century mansion they are restoring. While exploring the house, Sally starts to hear voices coming from creatures in the basement whose hidden agenda is to claim her as one of their own.” Here’s the trailer. In addition, I saw the movie at this year’s Los Angeles Film Festival and thought it was really well done and it’s definitely recommended.
The day after the premiere I got to sit down with del Toro and Holmes. While I was going to hold the interview until closer to release, with both revealing they’ll be at this year’s Comic-Con, I figure it’s better to post it now. During the interview we talked about making the film, how there are no cheap scares, and what’s the secret to making the characters stay in the house in a believable way. In addition, we talked about Comic-Con, Doug Liman’s Go, Pacific Rim and karaoke. Hit the jump to watch.

What movie did he say?
L’arcano incantatore (1996 – Italian)
I’m suprised Tom let katie out of the basement to make a horror film
Katie Holmes is simply gorgeous. Can’t wait to see her in the movie.
Did you guys purposely have the camera aiming at Katie’s dress?? Nice crotch shot Mrs. Cruise!!!
Yeah, does anyone know what horror movie he said premiered at the LA Film festival? I know he said “Ancient Sorcerer” afterwards, but he said the original title beforehand. I’d love to watch this
have no fear folks. if this kind of closeness keeps up, AT THE MOUNTAIN OF MADNESS with Cruise in the lead might just be one movie away(WB give Del Toro a “thank you Movie” if Pacific Rim hits. stop giving Snyder his thank yous. he has too much now)
steve was really nice to ask Ms. Holmes about Go because at that time, she was no longer “part” of the interview.
oh man! Katie Holmes is such a beauty. the cutest woman in hollywood. i really wish she would have starred in TDK. say what you want about her acting, but she captured that “childhood friend” in Rachel.
Enough with the karaoke!

Arcane Sorcerer was the name of the film.
Saw Guillermo del Toro present the arcane enchanter at LAFF. Found the film a little tough to grasp but it definitely had its moments. Del Toro was extremely kind to everyone and I geeked out when he reached his hand over my shoulder to give somebody an autograph. ha, love his films.
Guillermo del Toro is such a cool guy, say whatever you will about his work, a fan or not, the dude simply loves and respects movies. Love that he gets the chance to make the movies that he does.
