Guillermo del Toro may be the busiest man in Hollywood, but when he attaches his name to a project, you can bet safe money that it’s a worthwhile venture.  The latest example of this fact is the fantastic horror film Mama, executive produced by del Toro and based on a short film by Andres Muschietti.  The picture centers on two young sisters who are discovered alive and well in the woods after disappearing five years earlier.  When their uncle and his girlfriend bring the girls home to raise, they discover that something else has traveled home with them.  For more on the film, watch these four clips.

In a recent video interview, del Toro spoke about getting involved with the short film (which he calls, “Scary as fuck.”) in order to turn it into a feature.  He also talked about his favorite movie monsters, his preference of digital or practical effects and even gave an update on his next directorial effort, the haunted house story Crimson Peak.  Mama, starring Jessica Chastain, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Megan Charpentier and Isabelle Nélisse, opens January 18th.   Hit the jump to watch our video interview with del Toro.

Here’s the official synopsis for Mama:

Guillermo del Toro presents Mama, a supernatural thriller that tells the haunting tale of two little girls who disappeared into the woods the day that their parents were killed.  When they are rescued years later and begin a new life, they find that someone or something still wants to come tuck them in at night.

Five years ago, sisters Victoria and Lilly vanished from their suburban neighborhood without a trace.  Since then, their Uncle Lucas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and his girlfriend, Annabel (Jessica Chastain), have been madly searching for them.  But when, incredibly, the kids are found alive in a decrepit cabin, the couple wonders if the girls are the only guests they have welcomed into their home.

As Annabel tries to introduce the children to a normal life, she grows convinced of an evil presence in their house.  Are the sisters experiencing traumatic stress, or is a ghost coming to visit them?  How did the broken girls survive those years all alone?  As she answers these disturbing questions, the new mother will find that the whispers she hears at bedtime are coming from the lips of a deadly presence.

I’ve had enough of this guy… He promises the world and gives us a million unfinished projects. It’s pathetic… When he was making his best material he was full engaged in just that project.. Pan labyrinth, cronos and the devils backbone being the best 3… Pacific rim really doesn’t look great to me. Looks like another big blockbuster with robots. I hope I’m wrong there, but he presents movies instead of having anything to do with them. Don’t be afraid of the dark was a bust and he tagged his name on that failure as well. Stop making 50 projects at once, 35 of which that will never happen, 10 of which you have little to nothing to do with and the remaining g 5 are going to be half hearted. One at a time dude, use your talents wisely… Quality over quantity…

Well, he recently claimed that was working on just as many projects simultaneously as he does now in the middle of the nineties, only that back then you heard nothing about it because he wasn’t that famous and you didn’t have the internet ect. …
Of course that’s just what he’s saying.

He may be just as busy but he didn’t have that name for hi self in the nineties nd also wouldn’t that all have come to fruition by now? He doesn’t have anything under his belt to suggest that.

I appreciate the info. Though, I just think this guy could do wonders without the ADD mindset
