Guillermo Del Toro is currently making the press rounds to promote his new book The Night Eternal, which is the final installment in his and Chuck Hogan‘s The Strain trilogy of vampire novels. In a recent interview with Wired, Del Toro provided updates on his upcoming movie Pacific Rim, his horror video game inSane, his Hulk TV series, and The Haunted Mansion. Speaking about Pacific Rim, Del Toro tells Wired that shooting began on Monday and that the movie is “a very beautiful poem to giant monsters,” and he absolutely adores his cast, which includes Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Charlie Hunnam, and Ron Perlman. Del Toro continued,
Giant monsters versus giant robots. Twenty-five-story-high robots beating the crap out of 25-story-high monsters. We’re trying to create a world in which the characters are real and how it would affect our world politically, how it would affect the landscape if creatures like this really came out of the sea, etc.
Del Toro also said that he’s wrapping filming on the smaller horror movie Mama (which he’s producing), he and Hogan are working on a new series of books, he’s continuing to consult on projects at DreamWorks Animation, recently turned in a screenplay for pilot of the new Hulk TV series as well as his new adaptation of the Disney theme park ride, The Haunted Mansion. However, he says he’s not going to discuss non-active projects because “it creates the impression of … I am diverse, but I’m not that diverse.”
Del Toro did speak at length on inSane, a video game he’s developing with THQ and Volition. Up until pre-production began on Pacific Rim, Del Toro says he was working directly with the developers, “and every week we have a conference [call] where we exchange ideas about the design, the gameplay, about the models.” He also elaborated about what’s learning about video games as a storytelling medium:
I came to videogame development with a lot of humility because I didn’t want to come in with the attitude of, “Oh I know how to make movies, therefore I know how to make videogames,” which is a big mistake. I came in trying to learn a new medium because I think it’s going to be very useful for me as a storyteller.
With a videogame, you don’t have to solve one screenplay, you have to solve 20 screenplays, because you are giving the player the illusion of free will. If the character kills another character or destroys a building, the game goes one way; if the character doesn’t, it goes another. It keeps you very nimble.
I think that’s the biggest, and the most fun, lesson I’ve been getting. We’re being really, really nasty in the game. We’re really trying a lot of stuff that I don’t think would even fly in the movies. It’s still two-and-a-half or three years away, though, because videogame development is so long.
The announcement trailer (which you can check out below) says the game is due out in 2013, so in two years we’ll be getting a double-dose of Del Toro since Pacific Rim is set for May 10, 2013.
