Hailee Steinfeld May Star in Indie Adaptation of ROMEO & JULIET

     April 7, 2011

Oscar-nominee Hailee Steinfeld has recently become attached to the upcoming novel Forgotten and a re-imagining of Sleeping Beauty, and now she has a third project on her slate.  THR reports that Steinfeld is in talks to star in an indie adaptation of Romeo & Juliet.  Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park) wrote the screenplay and Italian director Carlo Carlie (Flight of the Innocent) will direct with Gabriele Muccino (Seven Pounds) attached as a producer.  There are currently no details on how Carlie plans to differentiate his Romeo & Juliet from the countless other adaptations, but the budget is in the $15 million range and shooting is expected to begin in Italy later this spring.

getting a 14-yr-old to do nude scenes, as apparently intended by Fellowes, even if it is done tastefully, must be illegal. This child cannot volunteer to undress in front of a film crew, the film crew can’t witness a sex act, even if acted, by a child and the parents can’t agree on her behalf, regardless of the potential income or career progression. To be frank, this sort of artistic licence is paedophilic and should not happen. If Fellowes wants to be authentic to Shakespeare’s vision of J as being 14, he should also insist on the part being played by a boy, as would have happened in Shakespeare’s time. I wonder if Fellowes has pictures of his own daughter in a state of undress at the same age: it would add to his authenticity……
