Fans of NBC’s stylish and brilliantly acted drama Hannibal are probably still recovering from the news last year that the show would be renewed at all, rather than focusing on where the story might go next. But Fannibals should be excited to hear that Boardwalk Empire‘s Michael Pitt will be joining the cast in a major role for the upcoming season. Hit the jump for more about his character, as well as a new promo video that shows Hannibal (Mads Mikkelsen) as bloodthirsty though debonair as ever (yet no word on who’s taking care of Will’s dog pack).
Pitt, a great but often overlooked actor, will be playing Mason Verger, a character from the original Hannibal and Red Dragon novels. (Verger was played by Gary Oldman in the 2001 Hannibal film). But NBC’s Hannibal is all about origins, so Pitt’s Verger (a wealthy patient of Dr. Lecter’s) will focus on his beginnings even prior to Red Dragon, in a potentially deadly dance of killers.
According to EW, “a cast description for the role compared him to the way Andrew Scott played Moriarty on Sherlock.” One of the most compelling story lines from the show last year was Will Graham’s (Hugh Dancy) descent into madness, and how the show portrayed his insanity (which was temporary, though goaded and somewhat controlled by Hannibal). Seeing a Moriarty-like chaotic evil force against Hannibal’s cool demeanor should be fun to watch play out, especially since Will will be waging his own war against Hannibal, along with trying to prove his own innocence. All in all, a very promising second season for an already excellent show.
Hannibal returns February 28 at 10 p.m. on NBC.
