Jason Blum and Christopher Landon on ‘Happy Death Day 2U’ & The Franchise’s Infinite Possibilities

     February 15, 2019

Of all the Blumhouse sequels, one of the most unexpected and unpredictable is Happy Death Day 2U, the genre-bending followup to the 2017 breakout hit that dropped a slasher movie in Groundhog’s Day-style time loop. For the sequel, writer-director Christopher Landon returns and reinvents his own franchise, transforming the slasher comedy into a sci-fi adventure (don’t worry there’s still a masked murderer) that takes audiences into new time loops and new dimensions.

With Happy Death Day 2U now in theaters, I recently sat down for an interview with Landon and producer Jason Blum for a fun interview. They talked about why they were surprised to make a Happy Death Day sequel, subverting expectations, and their theories on why multi-verse stories are all the rage right now. Watch what they had to say in the video above and read a break down of the discussion topics below.

Christopher Landon and Jason Bum:

  • If they wound up in a parallel universe, what movie would they want to stay exactly the way they know and love it?
  • When did they decide to make a sequel and how did it come together?
  • Now that they’ve opened up the multi-verse box, do their heads spin with the possibilities?
  • What’s their theory on why multi-verse stories are all the rage right now?

Here’s the scary sequel’s official synopsis:

Jessica Rothe leads the returning cast of HAPPY DEATH DAY 2U, the follow-up to Blumhouse’s (Split, Get Out, The Purge series) surprise 2017 smash hit of riveting, repeating twists and comic turns. This time, our hero Tree Gelbman (Rothe) discovers that dying over and over was surprisingly easier than the dangers that lie ahead. Jason Blum once again produces and Christopher Landon returns to write and direct this next chapter, while Happy Death Day executive producers Angela Mancuso and John Baldecchi are newly joined by EP Samson Mucke (Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse).
