It’s not easy to replace Harrison Ford. Just ask Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, the directors of the Han Solo spinoff movie. Yesterday we reported that over 2,500 actors have auditioned to play a young version of Ford’s iconic Star Wars character. 2,500 … and counting. It’s taking that much of a search to find someone with Ford’s particular brand of charisma and action-star abilities.
Steven Spielberg, meanwhile, is not even trying. When speaking to Screen Daily, the director said of the Indiana Jones star,
It’s certainly not my intention to ever have another actor step into his shoes in the way there have been many actors that have played Spider-Man or Batman. There is only going to be one actor playing Indiana Jones and that’s Harrison Ford.
The idea of a recast (I guess we’re all going to forget about how they were looking to ease Shia LaBeouf into the role with Kingdom of the Crystal Skull — though granted, he wasn’t literally going to become Indiana Jones) were sparked in 2014 when rumors suggested that the franchise would continue, Bond-like, with a new actor in the titular role. But back in October, we reported a few Indiana Jones 5 updates that included conflicting statements from producers Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall regarding how far into talks the film might be.
Spielberg, for his part, said he would like to return to Indiana Jones “because there are more adventure out there than films.” And, Harrison Ford also told EW recently that he’d “love to do another Indiana Jones and work with Steven [Spielberg] again — if we get a script, I’d love to do it.”
